Why WiMAX?

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) provides advanced wire­less broadband access in fixed, portable, and mobile environments. Motorola’s WiMAX solutions are based on the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Inc.) 802.16e-2005 standard for fixed and mobile applications. Focused on licensed spectrum bands, primar­ily 2.5GHz, 3.5GHz and 2.3GHz, WiMAX is a wireless alternative to wired broadband access with greater range than Wi-Fi and with the ability to deliver mobility at vehicular speeds. An industry consortium known as the WiMAX Forum® http://www.wimaxforum.org  (Motorola is a board member) manages the certification program for the WiMAX standard and coordinates the ecosystem to support an end-to-end solution.

WiMAX untethers broadband and makes it accessible and reliable for fixed, portable and mobile users in all regions of the world. Whether at home, in the office or out in world, we are connected to the ‘information superhighway’ at multi-megabit speeds on the go. One big hot-spot that delivers rich-media, bandwidth-intensive applications including voice, data and video.

As an all-IP, data-oriented access network using advanced wireless technology, WiMAX delivers ‘the bits’ at a lower cost than traditional cellular technologies.

In emerging markets where fixed-line infrastructure is limited, WiMAX is connecting entire populations to robust and reliable nationwide broadband networks quickly and at much lower cost than with fixed alternatives. WiMAX enables residential, enterprise and governmental applications and so delivering the benefits of the digital economy.

WiMAX is a mature technology: available today and is currently delivering residential and business services to millions of users across the globe. There is a large and growing eco-system with more than 530 companies that are members of the WiMAX Forum® (as of August 2008). WiMAX Forum® projects more than 133 million WiMAX users globally by 2012 and that approximately 70 percent of them will utilize mobile and portable WiMAX devices to access broadband Internet services. According to the WiMAX Forum, there are more than 260 service providers deploying WiMAX services in 110 countries worldwide and there are 63 forum-certified products and 20 device suppliers.

WiMAX is being adopted by widely different operators with diverse business plans:
• Wireless Cellular Providers are using it to enter fixed broadband markets, to add data to their 2G service or as complement to 3G. Other operators are making use of newly available spectrum to enter new geographies.
• Internet Service Providers use it to extend their reach and provide nomadic broadband or full mobility as a differentiation in the market.
• Wireline and Cable Operators are mobilizing the “triple-play” and extending the reach of broadband.
