Preparing your mobile phone for recycling

  • Please ensure all personal information is removed from your mobile phone before shipping and that you have removed your SIM card (if applicable). Learn how to delete personal information from your mobile phone's memory.
  • Be sure each cell phone battery is discharged, so the phone cannot be turned on. It prevents any chance of sparks. Do not detach the battery from the phone.

Packaging instructions:
The following suggestions may be helpful to ensure that your old mobile device arrives safely and intact at the recycling facility.

Returning your mobile phone(s) and accessorie(s) in a parcel

  • Step 1: Print online label.
  • Step 2: Select appropriate box. The box should tough enough to hold and protect your mobile phone(s) and accessorie(s) that you wish to return. It is not important to use a new box — the important thing is that the box is in good condition.
  • Step 3: Pack your mobile phone(s) and accessorie(s) in the box. Any loose batteries should be placed separately in sealed plastic bags. You may use sandwich bags.
  • Step 4: Label your box. Place the return label on front of the box. If you are using an old box, ensure that it is clean enough to allow tape to adhere.
  • Step 5: Shipping: Drop off package at your nearest post office.

The recycling process

  • Prevent pollution and protect our environment
  • Minimize solid and hazardous waste going to landfill
  • Recover resources to manufacture new products
  • Reduce the need to use raw materials and save our natural resources

More than 90 percent of the materials in mobile phones can be recovered and used as raw materials for new products or for energy recovery.

  • Batteries include nickel to make stainless steel and cobalt and cadmium to make new batteries.
  • Circuit boards include small amounts of gold and silver that is used in jewellery and other applications.
  • Handset housings and casings include plastics that are shredded and used to make fence posts and pallets.
  • Accessories include plastics and metals that are shredded, sorted and then used to make new plastic or metal products.
