Standards-based Innovation

Driving industry standardization around the world

Motorola is uniquely positioned to drive the evolving digital lifestyle by delivering multi-screen experiences across multiple types of devices. The growth in recent years of consumer demand for multi-function mobile devices and the emergence of cloud-based services and applications have catapulted our innovation engine. Yet it is our belief that while many share this vision, global standardization is a key element to making it a reality.

Shining example of standards innovation
Standards help make innovation happen faster. For example, common platform architectures can deliver real economies of scale and act as a catalyst for industry growth. As a result, consumers experience more choice, lower costs and more value with the services, applications and content that are available to them. Standards have made it possible for Motorola and our customers to introduce new, market-ready equipment and technologies with less time-to-market and fewer risks.

The ubiquitous cellular phone provides a great example of how technology innovation and the standards system have worked together to change the world. Motorola demonstrated the world’s first portable cellular phone in 1973. Motorola was a key player in the creation and deployment of early voice-centric cellular networks, such as the AMPS, TACS and GSM systems, and a driving force behind 3G voice and data innovations such as WCDMA and HSPA. We were pivotal in the definition of 4G technology, most notably the LTE air interface, and we are now a leading driver behind the deployment of LTE. In parallel with Motorola’s wide-area network (WAN) expertise, however, we have recognized and embraced the power of standards-based short-range communications systems. Motorola was a founding member of the Bluetooth Special Interest Group and we are active in a wide variety of IEEE 802 groups, including 802.11/WiFi.

Motorola’s record of standards-based innovation is by no means limited, however, to air interface technology. Motorola has been a leader for more than two decades in core network design, mobility, and network offloading technologies, including those instantiated in the 3GPP Enhanced Packet Core (EPC). Motorola’s standards leadership is also well represented in multimedia systems – for example, we were key contributors to the design and evolution of the ITU/ISO H.264/AVC video coding specification, and played a fundamental role in the design and deployment of the AMR, EVRC and G.718 mobile audio coding standards.

In short, standards-based innovation has meant that mobile radio communication has gone from a niche market to more than four billion users in all walks of life in a matter of a few decades. Motorola has been behind all of this from both the technology and standards innovation front. We intend to continue playing a fundamental role as the industry evolves.

A driving force in industry standards
Motorola has played a key role in major industry standards and forums since their emergence in the late 1980's and early 1990's. Today, we are a driving force behind more than 50 standards bodies and continue to look for opportunities to engage in defining tomorrow’s next big idea in less time and with fewer risks.

We have played a fundamental role in the design and standardization of LTE-Advanced air interface technology, including the contribution of advanced MIMO techniques and multi-carrier operation in LTE networks. We have been critical to the definition of 3GPP radio access technology inter-working and network offloading standards. We are making key contributions to the ITU/ISO H.265/HVC video compression standard, to the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) for digital TV transmission and to DOCSIS for data transmission over cable systems. Additionally, Motorola is a founder of MPEG LA, LLC, the patent licensing authority established to foster broader deployment of MPEG-2 compliant systems and have recently joined the MPEG-4 Visual patent pool as a licensor.

We believe that being at the forefront of these standardization efforts positions Motorola as a leader in new technology adoption and give us a distinct time-to-market advantage.

Drawing on more than 80 years of innovation heritage, Motorola is helping people realize the promise of convergence by fusing innovative technology with human insights to create experiences that simplify, connect and enrich people's lives.
