"A sponsorship in Indy Car racing offers broad-based appeal to a wide consumer audience allowing us to gain visibility, brand exposure and product awareness among our target audiences," said Fred Tucker, executive vice president and general manager of Motorola's Automotive, Energy and Controls Group.
"Indy Car racing's global popularity and phenomenal growth are very exciting to Motorola from a sponsor's standpoint," said Tucker. "Virtually all of Motorola's major businesses supply products that are used in motorsports. The Automotive and Industrial Electronics Group and Semiconductor Products Sector design and manufacture automotive electronics, sensors and semiconductors; the Land Mobile Products Sector provides two-way communications between the driver and the team, and the Cellular Subscriber Group and Paging Product Group provide wireless communications that are integral to the teams' operations. The number of Motorola products used in motorsports make Motorola a natural sponsor for Indy Car racing."
The recently announced partnership between Brix Sports and Comptech Racing, now known as Brix /Comptech Racing, will campaign Honda's latest Indy V8 engine, a Reynard chassis and use Firestone tires for the full 1996 season on the Indy Car circuit.
"This joint venture will unite five powerful partners in a focused and effective motorsports program," said Harry Brix, president of Pana-Pacific Corporation and Brix Sports. "Motorola is a recognized leader in consumer electronics, while Brix Sports and Comptech have both proven their championship-winning capabilities on the track. Honda and Firestone bring a high level of engineering expertise and technical support to the program. We believe this team is going to make an impact in Indy Car racing."
The Brix /Comptech Racing Motorola Indy Car will be driven by 34 year-old Parker Johnstone of Redmond, Oregon. Johnstone has driven for Comptech since 1987 and is the winningest driver in the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) series history with 54 career victories. He demonstrated Indy Car talent last season as he qualified for the pole at the Michigan 500 and ran the fastest Indy Car race lap (231.659 mph) ever.
"Motorola's sponsorship will provide the continuity that will allow this team to really show its ability," said Johnstone. "The fact that Motorola selected this team is a real compliment. We're very excited to be associated with a company with Motorola's reputation for quality. Everyone on the team is working very, very hard to make sure that we exceed Motorola's expectations."
In addition to its Indy Car sponsorship, Motorola's involvement in motorsports includes sponsorship through Brix Sports of A.J. Foyt in NASCAR's Winston Cup Series, an IMSA World Sports Car and Grand Touring Sedan Team and a NARC Sprint Car. Motorola's sports marketing portfolio also includes a partner level sponsorship of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta; title sponsorship of the Western Open golf tournament on the PGA tour; title sponsorship of a professional cycling team racing in Europe and the United States; and sponsorship of running events in Phoenix, Chicago and Austin, Texas.
Motorola is one of the world's leading providers of wireless communications, semiconductors, and advanced electronic systems and services. Major equipment businesses include cellular telephone, two-way radio, paging and data communications, personal communications, automotive, defense and space electronics and computers. Communication devices, computers and millions of consumer produces are powered by Motorola semiconductors. Motorola's 1994 sales were $22.2 billion.
