MOTOROLA AND SUN MICROSYSTEMS JOIN FORCES TO DEVELOP EMBEDDED SPACE

Motorola to Incorporate JavaTM Technology in
Its Consumer and Embedded Products

Schaumburg, Ill. and Palo Alto, Ca. -- January 26, 1998 -- Motorola (NYSE: Mot) and Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NYSE: SUNW) today announced that Motorola has entered into a licensing agreement with Sun Microsystems, Inc. for the use and distribution of its full family of JavaTM platform technologies. Additionally, both companies will cooperate to bring Motorola's embedded and communications expertise and technologies to the Java environment.

Under this corporate-wide agreement, Motorola now has the opportunity to incorporate Java technology across its extensive portfolio of products, which include silicon systems and solutions, smart cards, automotive components, wireless devices, and advanced electronics systems and computers. The broad nature of the agreement provides a potentially unifying element to Motorola's large and multi-business, global software development activities.

"Java has been widely accepted by various industries, our software development partners, but most importantly our customers as an open software solution," said Chris Galvin, CEO of Motorola. "When you couple Java's 'Write Once, Run AnywhereTM' attribute, which can be employed throughout Motorola's independent business units, with its potential to be used in the widest range of complex to the simplest of embedded silicon solutions and telecom applications, Java is a sought after alternative for us and our customer partners."

"This agreement marks the largest technology license agreement in the history of the Java platform. Motorola ships many tens of millions of embedded silicon solutions and radio products a year worldwide as the market leader in various industries. We look forward to seeing Java technologies in as many of those products as possible," said Scott McNealy, chairman, president and CEO of Sun Microsystems, Inc. "With Java technologies, Motorola can bring transparent connectivity to networks and other devices safely and simply. Thousands of content providers, independent software vendors, retailers and manufacturers will have the opportunity to create content and interactive applications that could redefine the way people use devices to communicate. We're very enthusiastic about working with Motorola to deliver Java technologies in its various products."

Motorola is also a Platinum co-sponsor of JavaOne(SM), Sun's 1998 Worldwide Java Developer Conference(SM). JavaOne will take place March 24-27, 1998 at San Francisco's Moscone Convention Center.
