MOTOROLA SMARTACTIONS™ : Uncover the secret super powers of your phone

November 17, 2011 : BY Motorola

Did you know your phone can automatically change settings that could prevent ringer embarrassment, improve your battery power by up to 30 percent and generally make your life easier? Well, it can do all that if you have Smart Actions.

Installed on new Motorola phones, like the amazingly thin DROID RAZR, Smart Actions is the tool to help you enjoy your phone more. Want the scores when you get up in the morning? Smart Actions can have them ready for you. Want to stop stressing about changing your phone to vibrate when you get to work? Smart Actions can make that happen.

And that’s just the start. Smart Actions can make changes in response to certain Wi-Fi networks, it can start your favorite playlist when you plug in your headphones or it can make simple changes to save your battery power. You decide what you want to happen and when and Smart Actions does the rest. Yep, it’s little out of the future and a lot awesome.

Take a look!

Good idea, but the available actions lack some obvious ones. For example, when I’m sitting in my office in front of my computer, I do email from my computer, not my phone. I don’t need my mobile phone bleeping at me for every new email. But I would like for my mobile phone to ring. I can set a trigger based on the GPS location of my office or being within range of the office wifi. But, there is not action to alerts or notifications. When Moto gets around to adding such useful actions, hopefully it will bother to make them a specific to each setting and application. In an ideal world there would be an action named “change system settings” that, when creating a new rule, would, when that action is added to the rule, make a record of all current system settings, then open system settings, let me munge around and change any any all system settings I want, then when I’m done compare to determine which settings I changed and to what, and then create an action for that rule that would make those setting changes when trigger happens. There should be a similar action named “change application settings” that allows me to select an application and then performs the same steps to create an action that changes to learn what setting s I want to change for that application and make those setting changes when the trigger happens. Hopefully, while a rule is active, those actions would remember the settings they changed and restore them when the rule deactivates.

Thank you for your feedback. We continue to add new functionality to Smart Actions, including new Triggers, Actions, and Suggestions that will enhance the experience to align the behavior of the device to the user’s situations. Regarding your other points, most of the common settings are already exposed so that users can create rules that adjust those settings when the conditions of the rule are met, and Smart Actions returns those settings to their default state when the rule is no longer active. Are there specific settings that should be considered for a future version?

A Trigger that would be great to have is one based on insertion into the Car Dock or the HD Dock. An additional Action might be the ability to change the Media volume and the Alarm volume much like the Ringer volume Action.

You cannot set the circumference at this point, thanks.

Location trigger by GPS without Wifi being on would be nice. I have little need for Wifi with the data plan that I have and leave it off most of the time. But I would like to use Smart Actions with location triggers.

Two triggers that I’d like to see…
    1) GPS trigger to turn on/off WiFi when I arrive/leave certain locations.
    2) Car Dock trigger to turn on GPS & Bluetooth

All you need to do is the following:

    1) Click on “Email settings” in the Email application
    2) Click on “Notifications” under “Email settings”
    3) Click on “Ringtones”
    4) Click on “Silent”

You can also disable notifications to email if you like on the “Notifications” screen. Hope that helps.

I think if this app/feature could get more development it could shine. For now I use Automateit pro as I do a combination of triggers such as “and if or” statements like in java programming. Some examples for home use, I have wifi turn on and connect to my home router when I’m at home based on the only cell tower in my area AND if wifi is not currently on. Combination of 2 or more triggers would be to turn on/off gps when docked AND charging and vise versa. Or when I get out of the office area via time trigger and cell tower, to turn to Normal audio with vibrate, and to the pre set volume level for my notifications.

Insidemotorola, I am having a conflict with Smart Actions where I have it set to trigger for calendar events on my “work” calendar, and it works great. But I have noticed that it also triggers for the calendar that I have set up for my sons events. Is there a known fix for this?
