Motorola Update on Ice Cream Sandwich

December 7, 2011 : BY Motorola

UPDATE: To get the latest information on MotoCast, please visit the support page.

Like you, we are excited to see that Google released the source code to Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS)! We’d like to address the question many of you have now – when can I get my ICS?  There are many steps and processes that go into Ice Cream Sandwich in a way that works for the carrier and for you.  Once source code is released from Google, it doesn’t automatically update to your device.

Each new version of Android launches with one device partner, in what is called the “Google Experience Device” or GED, the showcase device for a new Android release.  The GED partner for each launch works with Google during the development of the OS so that the device and new Android version are ready for a coordinated simultaneous launch.

Once that GED device ships, the rest of the Android community gains access to the Android source code as its made public shortly after – a critical milestone for device manufacturers and component suppliers, enabling us to start work on integrating the new release into our existing products.

Google has performed the initial public release of the Ice Cream Sandwich source code; additional releases will enable device manufacturers to ship commercial product with ICS.  We are currently assessing this source code, and over the next month we will be determining which devices will get the upgrade and when  — and we will communicate this as information becomes available. From there, the following steps take place:

1. Merge and adapt the new release for different device hardware architecture(s) and carrier customizations

This means that we take the source code and incorporate it into upgrades for devices on which this can perform well, along with making sure the carrier requirements are met.  Silicon partners such as Qualcomm, TI, and nVidia adapt this to their chipsets in parallel and we incorporate these as they become available. This is also the time when we begin integrating all of the Motorola-specific software enhancements into the source code.  Features like MotoCast, SMARTACTIONS, and our comprehensive enterprise solutions are integral parts of our device experiences, and we want to make sure we continue delivering differentiated experiences for our consumers with these software upgrades.

2. Stabilize and ‘bake’ the result to drive out bugs

This means that we will prepare the upgrade to meet the quality and stability requirements to enter the wireless carrier’s certification lab.

3. Submit the upgrade to the carriers for certification

This is the point in the process where the carrier’s lab qualifies and tests the upgrade. Each carrier has different requirements for phases 2 and 3. There may be a two-month preparation cycle to enter a carrier lab cycle of one to three months.

3.5 Perform a Customer pre-release

We may perform some customer testing before a final release is delivered publicly to our user base.

4. Release the upgrade

We are planning on upgrading as many of our phones as possible.  The ability to offer the upgrade depends on a number of factors including the hardware/device capabilities, the underlying chipset software support, the ICS support and then the ability to support the Motorola value add software.

To recap our earlier post, we are planning to upgrade DROID RAZR™ by Motorola, Motorola RAZR™, Motorola XOOM™ (including Family Edition) and DROID BIONIC™ by Motorola to Ice Cream Sandwich. We will provide more precise guidance on timing after post-public push of Ice Cream Sandwich by Google, as well as any possible additions to this list of devices: As always, please refer to the Motorola Android Software Upgrade News page for the latest information.

We hope this provides some insight into what we do behind the scenes here at Motorola.  Should you have any other questions, feel free to hit us up here in the comments!

And for an exclusive Q&A with Dave Rothschild, senior vice president of Software and Services Product Management at Motorola Mobility, head over to the Motorola Media Center.

  • Pbrdegree

That’s fine. I’m sure devs will release ICS for my X way before you guys do. I’m glad I don’t rely on either Moto or Verizon to take care of my phone.

  • Anonymous

This should be simple for the Droid as it is pure vanilla Android so no other testing is necessary. So when will my OG get it?

    • BRL

The Nexus One isn’t getting it so the OG certainly isn’t either.

    • Dangerous

DROID doesn’t have the hardware to get an official 4.0 build

      • Not

DRIOD is not a phone. It is a brand.

        • Anonymous

The original was simply called the DROID, so it’s both a specific device and a brand, depending on context.

    • Anonymous

Probably never. Phone is old and over 2 years old…time to upgrade. CM is even dropping it from supported devices for ICS.

      • Michael

They are droping it due to the locked bootloaders, as far as I understood. Porting ICS back to match the old kernel seems to be the problem.

Why don’t Motorola unlock? Good devices require good service!!

        • Anonymous

The OG Droid doesn’t have an encrypted signature for the bootloader; that’s the issue. All bootloaders on Verizon are locked, but Motorola is the only manufacturer encrypting as well. Unlocking a bootloader is what the guys at XDA do, and the OG Droid is one of the most developer friendly devices ever released (and also Moto’s biggest hit).

    • http://asten77.myopenid.com/ MrGlitch

Uh, even with vanilla, it’s not that simple. Drivers and Hardware still require work and testing. Even CyanogenMod isn’t touching the OG Droid

  • Anonymous

Sucks that my Droid X will never see an official ICS update. Oh well, I’m done with the locked Moto bootloaders and am switching to the Galaxy Nexus sometime this month.

    • http://twitter.com/Sirtopeia Sirtopeia

Hopefully CM9 will bring me ICS. If they don’t, I’m going to be sad :(

    • Anonymous

      I’m right there with you.

  • http://twitter.com/searxxx Sergio

    ATRIX not?

    • Al

At this point, I’m putting my hopes on modders and not Moto, because even if we do get it, it’s going to be ridden with MotoBlur.

  • Guest

ATRIX oughta get it – it’s a “flagship” phone and not even a year old.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000863927633 Michael Magnus

i hope the motorola atrix 4g will get ICS

    • Mario1976

Second that. Atrix and it’s webtop is a perfect concept for Citrix Users like me. Would also love to see an ICS update.

      • Nikesh01

I agree, please update the Motorola Atrix (1st gen). I am pretty sure the Atrix’s hardware is more than required to run ICS.

    • John

Please update the UK Atrix to 4.0!

    • Anonymous

I have the Atrix 4G too and hope they update it to ICS as well.

  • Anonymous

¿Have you any plans to upgrade the Motorola Atrix? because i didnt see that device in the list.

  • Lmorrow02

    Droid X2?

    • Anonymous

We wanted to remind everyone that we are continuing technical evaluation to determine which devices will be upgraded to ICS — and we will communicate this as information becomes available.

      • Sonicaholic

Roll on the day google eventualy take over motorola mobility maybe the lack of software support will eventualy get solved.
I don’t beleve google should allow branding of there OS anyway the consumer is sick to the back teeth of bloatware that 95% of us don’t want didn’t ask for or will never ever use.
Vodafone uk being 1 example they sold there desire on the understanding it was unbranded only to release an update 6 months later filling it with vodafone bloatware only to have to reverse this due to consumer uproar, when will carriers ever learn the best way to keep there customers happy is not to force feed us rubbish or fill our phones with branded crap and allow the OEM’s a speedy process for OS updates.

      • http://twitter.com/adomanico01 Anthony Domanico

        Cool copy and paste action.

      • rgthane

Can I remind you, insidemotorola, that the I will not need to stay with Motorola because of snails pace iteration. It was MY choice to pick you based on phone specs and promises of rolling out OS’s. It is my further choice to upgrade to another companies phone.

I will be upgrading my Droid X in May. You have until April to release, NOT SAY you are going to release, but REALLY RELEASE, ICS for my phone.

      • Anonymous

Per Google, any hardware capable of running Gingerbread will run IceCreamSandwich. Any handset you have that’s now running Gingerbread that doesn’t get upgraded to ICS is simply due to a manufacturer’s laziness. Of course, Moto is usually pretty good with updates, so I’ll wait and see before accusing them of anything. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the entire Motorola line that’s currently running GB get ICS; from the DROID X to the Atrix 1 to the RAZR.

      • Anonymous

Why aren’t you communicating any more information about this though? It’s been a week. You guys have a twitter account and a blog. Use these so that people aren’t just waiting for the answer that never comes.

  • http://twitter.com/JFMFT Josh Fowler

So if you read this… it clearly shows it WILL take about 6 months to ship ICS onto these new devices. Why is that?

1 month (mid-January): “We are currently assessing this source code, and over the next month we will be determining which devices will get the upgrade and when”

3-5 months (mid-April at the earliest to mid-June at the “supposed” latest, delays not included): There may be a two-month preparation cycle to enter a carrier lab cycle of one to three months.

If you look at it, it’s pretty clear – it takes Motorola SIX MONTHS to upgrade ONE device to the newest version of Android. That is insane, silly, ridiculous, and honestly sad.

    You fail, Moto. Sorry.

    • Anonymous

And yet no other OEM is doing much better. I think google needs to find a way to make it easier for all OEMs and carriers.

      • Orillian

The bulk of the time is consumed dealing with Carriers. 1-2 months preparing for Carrier testing and then 1-3 months of Carrier testing. THAT right there is the issue, not Google, not Moto, but the Carriers.

      • guest

It’s not about how hard it is for Motorola. They could compile it with proper drivers in a very short time for testing purposes. The delay comes from making sure they can sneak on Blur, bloatware from sponsors or partners, crap carrier programs (think VZ navigator).

Drop the useless crap I don’t want or need, and updates would roll out much faster.

    • Anonymous

well you also have to remember that the sdk has been out for over a month already. theyve already completed which devices will get it. they are most likely already on the blurifying stage. id see feb to march for the devices on a carrier. jan to early feb for wifi tablets as they dont go through a carrier.

  • lleal2011

Is the Motorola going to forget the Atrix?

  • Aaron Christison

I am a LITTLE PEEVED that I dont see the Photon on this list. If thats the case I wont be buying another Motorola phone ever again. I will jump ship and try an HTC phone. I absolutley love the Photon and would hate to see it not get the ICS update. I think it would make an already awesome phone that much more awesome.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for posting this–useful information. I think a lot of us android enthusiasts are frustrated by the prospect of the so called “value add” software being what keeps us from getting an operating system upgrade. Especially since in most cases, equivalents to that software are available in the android market.

It would also be nice if all devices were bootloader unlocked so we could turn to the developer community when an update isn’t coming through Motorola/the carrier.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Shaffer897 Chris Shaffer

all android OS 2.3 should should get ICS but its up to them idc cuz i have the bionic so i will be getin lol for the another who wont

  • Kyle Goodman

If you’re not going to give us DX users an official upgrade at least do us the service of unlocking our bootloader so we can experience the best Android OS to date without having to jump through hoops. We already have an alpha build, why not support us and make it easier because you have dropped your support for us.

  • Dove Boy

I really hope Atrix 4G could get the ICS, here in China it’s ME860, and this mode is extremely famous in China, come on bring us the ICS please, and let’s have confidence on your service, because the hardware of Atrix is power enough to get it.

  • 白鸽 男孩

  • http://twitter.com/manicpop Anthony Schmidt

People are tired of this stuff. I’m not buying a new phone unless the bootloader is unlocked or unlockable — period. I’d rather install a community build of ICS (or whatever I want to install) than wait around for Motorola to maybe release an update eventually if they feel like it.

  • Anonymous

Surely the Xoom Wi-Fi model should be a fairly straight forward upgrade with no Motorola-specific software or carrier certification. According to this article it should be out months ahead of anything else, which is basically … now.

  • GGDE

Allthough my Milestone 2 just got the update from Froyo to Gingerbread (timing… :X), I DO expect to get the Ice Cream Sandwich AND further ones too. Optimize your processes people!!! What’s with the never-ending testing or whatever?!?!!? The MS 2 has a pretty solid configuration, so there’s really no apparent reason for it not getting an update!!! Would hate to regret my purchase even more… and not because of technical faults, but simply due to lack of support!!!!!!!

  • Thetimhagan

Atrix 2 is newer than bionic so will it get ICS?

  • lleal2011

I will never buy a Motorola Smartphone. Because you do not give a damn about South America I paid $ 1000 dollars for a Motorola Atrix Android 2.2.2. and no update! Look at the complains posted on Facebook. http://www.facebook.com/MotorolaBrasil. ALL Motorola consumers in Brazil, are dissatisfied. Take urgent action! I want ICS on the Atrix BR.

  • http://twitter.com/daniel_ohh Daniel Ogilvie

Can you PLEASE unlock the Droid X bootloader to make it easier for the dev community to put ICS on the DX ourselves?

  • Fotogravin

I really hope that motorola will unlock all bootloaders of devices they no longer support with android upgrades. Fact is: with custom roms people don’t need motorola’s developers, just an open system. Please give us unlocked bootloaders! The defy should handle ICS really fine with its hardware, but didn’t even get gingerbread. CM7 works absolutely smoothly.
    Shame on you, motorola!

  • AtrixOwner

The OG Atrix should be on that list. Its has the hardware to support ICS and is fairly new. Or I’ll be really pissed

I call BS… Android 4.0 is backwards compatible… I have already had it running on my Dream (the G1 to everyone else) and that is the oldest Android device in existence (maybe apart from the odd prototype).

If the G1 can run it anything can.

  • http://twitter.com/toddw Todd Wright

Maybe you could start putting straight ASOP on your phones to speed this up and get rid of the bloat?

  • lleal_Brazil

So instead of working on new releases how about stabilizing whats out there. Gingerbug broke my Droid 2 and many others from what I am reading. Yes, I have done a factory reset multiple times. The device was solid on Froyo.

  • Jamie

I am curious about one thing. This is equivalent to a jump from Windows XP to Windows 7. How are you going to explain to customers, “oh by the way, your phone will look, sound, and operate differently when we’re done,” and more importantly, how will backing up data be achieved? I would hope through the use of a computer for the sake of having a middleman keep a backup in case something goes wrong.

  • Anonymous

The real “competitive differentiation” to be had is to not add all that junk. Make the phone fast to update so you don’t have to go through all the steps above.

Hence my next phone will be a Nexus and not a Motorola.

This logic seems to be lost on most the carriers. If you want to add your junk, make it efficient and quick to do so, or don’t do it. If you choose not to listen to this advice you’re going to find your margins shrinking as Android users are smartening up fast to this problem. I’ll be using only Google Nexus phones until HTC or Moto get it together and start offering speed of updates and user choice of launcher (stock or brand).

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jack-E-Mabry-Jr/1726259049 Jack E Mabry Jr

Dang, sure want the Motorola Photon to get ICS.

    • Willsonic

I agree that the Photon should absolutely be on the list of devices. It is the premier Motorola device on Sprint, and is considered by many to be the “Sprint version of the Bionic”. The device has been released recently enough to warrant an upgrade to ICS.

  • Anonymous

so the droid3 releases first w the bionic very soon after it, they seem to share practically the same specifications, and yet bionic gets the update first while d3 isnt even mentioned.

Samsung nexus beckons me. I cant believe I directly swayed 7 ppl to get the moto D2G. Im only recoomending the Nexus phones now.

  • Anonymous

Lets get that Xoom update sooner rather than later, please! It should be pretty simple, as the Xoom was the GES device for Honeycomb, and doesn’t need much tweaking from a stock 4.0 build, I would think.

  • Tips14

the Droid X better be receiving some ICS love or I’m going to stop buying motorola phones. first the locked bootloader and now this. smh. be ashamed motorola, you and verizon.

  • Gonzo

My Atrix also wants to upgrade!

  • Anonymous

Sounds great… but know that if you dont support the Atrix 4G, a phone that hasnt even been on the market for a year, I’ll never buy a Motorola product again.

    • Anonymous

We wanted to remind everyone that we are continuing technical evaluation to determine which devices will be upgraded to ICS — and we will communicate this as information becomes available.

  • Anonymous

so if we have a wifi only xoom, will we expect the ICS update sooner? Also, will ICS be blurified for the original xoom, since it was stock vanilla honeycomb when that came out?

  • Pcxpress12

there should be a update from 2.1 and 2.2 phones like backflip and flipside as well, i’m not worried about ics, but i think they should work on all android phones updates. i realize they don’t have to do anything for older ones or any phone out there, but it sure would be nice to have all phones up to date with the newer versions. then we all can have the new apps and speed we all want and need.

  • http://twitter.com/adomanico01 Anthony Domanico

Why is the Photon not even on your list?

    • http://profiles.google.com/matt.voran Matt Voran

Photon HAS to be getting this. Huge uproar if not.

      • Anonymous

        Agreed. Photon is a must.

        • Anonymous

Photon is dead. Buy another phone if you want to upgrade.

          • Pete Oliva

Photon is dead? What? It was just born!

It’s a brilliant phone and I just got it in October. I love it. It’s my favorite phone ever. It would really stink if it were not given the ICS upgrade, especially given that it’s well within spec range.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Speers90 Andrew Speers

Funny thing is the Prime isn’t even out yet and I’ve been running ICS on my bionic for over a week. Still Alpha builds, but all thats missing is 3g/4g audio and camera. Extremely solid build. Fast and smooth. Almost don’t care about the data, just the audio

TL/DR MOTO SUCKS and needs to stop trying to force feed us their blur BS and let ICS be what google wants it to be. PURE GOOGLE

  • D4niel

“There may be a two-month preparation cycle to enter a carrier lab cycle of one to three months.”

Wow. Three to five months just for the carrier testing. The mobile world moves too fast for almost half a year of just testing. There are reasons why I prefer the Nexus devices.

  • Its Secret

Sorry but the code has been released a full month ago.
So where lies the problem to upgrade the xoom wifi now?

Please explain, this is simply not understandable, especially when we have to see that the chinese already sell a produc with ics on a TOTALLY DIFFERENT hardware platform.

    Moto, what a shame.

As always to expect from american companies, just big words.

  • Nate

Droid 3 please? shouldnt be too hard. Same as bionic just less ram and no 4g…

  • Kevinmcquadeusa

    droid x 2?

  • http://www.facebook.com/lalo.valdez.r Eduardo Valdez Regino

Please help us! Atrix owners in México did not get updates from carrier. The Update news page refers to Q4 2011, but nothing happens yet! Any advice for us? Is there someone who help with upgrade issues here in México? Thanks in advance.

  • Tekniz3

I’m with everyone asking about the Moto Atrix 4G (1st gen). Really hope it get this update too.

  • Matt Bryda

Don’t care about ICS but please fix the pile of stink that is Gingerbread on the Droid X. I’m tired of the rebooting, instability and bugginess.

    • Mr. X

I don’t understand the issues some people are having with their X’s. I’ve had 0 issues and I’ve had 2.3 on mine since the day it was released by Verizon. My X is stock and hasn’t been unlocked so my guess is people that put on a custom rom then flashed back to the Moto Rom to update to 2.3 are the ones having problems.

      • Bflors

You are wrong! I am stock all the way and have lots of problems with my DX. GB is horrible.

        • jon winston

My x runs great, no thanks to Moto or VZW. Apex 2.0 rc4.

  • Mike_ATL

If the Atrix 4G does not receive this update, I will be highly disappointed. This is supposed to be the “Most powerful smartphone on the market”, it doesn’t act like it a lot of times, but there should be no doubts as to whether or not it can run ICS. They at the very least need to release a patch to the GB update and fix all the problems it created.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kleber-Moraes/1479027528 Kleber Moraes

    And droid/milestone 3?

  • http://profiles.google.com/paw.zubr Paweł Zubrycki

    Still no Droid3?

  • Bmrfang

Will the ATRIX 4g be upgraded as well.?

  • Bubbadodawinafred

This answers no questions for me. Will the DROID X receive the ics update? Is the phone to old and not powerful enough?

  • Anonymous

If I’m reading these comments right there are definately a large number of people who have the Atrix 4g (like myself) and really want to see ICS on it. We know that it is physically capable of supporting it and really hope that it doesn’t get forgotten especially since it’s less than one year old.

  • http://www.facebook.com/angeljoelgarcia Angel Joel Garcia Lopez

I honestly hope you consider to update the Atrix 4G. Since is one of the best phones out, and the first phone to overcome the iPhone.

  • Mtowe7

    Very informative. Thank you.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=702065543 Michael Wand

What about the Photon 4g? It’s obviously got the power to run ICS, so to see it not receive an update would make it the last Motorola I would ever buy.

  • Nicknac100

    atrix please

  • jake creed

Why mention the same phones but leave out the droid 3 which is less than 7 months old? it has the same specs as the bionic minus the 4g and ram.

In fact droid 3 should be one of the first moto’s to get ics. that or moto should give every droid 3 owner a droid 4 since you screwed people by releasing that phone so soon after the d3 and it will get ics.

If you can give the bionic ics you can give the d3 ics and it should get it before the droid 4 btw.

    • http://twitter.com/gabrieleromero Gabriel E Romero

Seriously. I feel so screwed for purchasing the Droid 3. The sales representative at Verizon told me that they wont have a 4G keyboarded phone for at least a year so I shouldn’t hold out. Now I’m stuck with this junk motoblurred POS.

  • Marvinmighty

if it takes more than a month. I’ll just switch to Sam there suppose to get it1st

  • Anonymous

Please add the Droid3 to the list. We all know it is not too different from the Bionic.
Also, please do not install bloat!

  • Daniel Lipa

Do something for Defy! Gingerbread at least.I paid my hard earned money for (i thought) good smartphone. Where is manufacturer support? It’s almost 2012 and i’m forced to use Froyo. And what Motorola is doing? Updating to Gingerbread? No, you want GB, buy Defy + (almost exactly same sh_t but working on GB) Are you f_king kidding me?? I dont wan’t instal mods on my phone, i want official updates you lazy&greedy bastards!

  • Tshelby73

How about droid x2. Another year and a half before contract is up for me. How about pure ics no blur and unlocked bootloader being motorola is google now.

  • Thesian

    Motorola Photon 4G! Please!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1726708231 Mike Fontaine

So, what you are saying is: Droid 3 owners are not getting ICS? Man am I glad I bought a phone with a locked bootloader.

  • Anonymous

One thing I see clearly after reading this post: Carriers are the cancer of smartphone innovation. I would like them not to have so much power over devices. It only introduces crap, slows down the process by MONTHS and they even end up putting spyware into phones (CarrierIQ). F the carriers!

  • Sarreq

so, nothing about the Droid 3… please don’t leave us in the dust. it’s so irritating when hardware makers create something then decide only a couple montgs after its been released that it was a bad idea.

  • Anonymous

The problem is not if a Motorola device hardware is capable of accepting an upgrade or not. The question boils down to if Motorola wants to push people to buy newer devices or not. So, only the latest and newest receive the upgrades, if your model is more than 3-6 months old then you are probably out of luck. It is the business strategy of Motorola, as simple as that…

    • Daniel Lipa

There’s simple solution for that. NEVER AGAIN buy Motorola product!
I’m using Defy now, but i’m gettin upset more and more. I heard that even ZTE Blade will get Gingerbread. This is not ok that i’d have to buy Defy + if i want to use newer version of OS, or install custom rom.
I really like the new RAZR. A lot. But if I pay for it about 650 $ and after 9-12 months Motorola give me a finger instead next update, it would make me very angry. I’m affraid that they can do it this way so for now I’m still just thinking and watching reviews on YT. Pissing on customers is the easiest way to loose them. In my country people say “Greedy one looses twise as much”.
Hope to see at least 2.3.4 on my Defy. Please guys, get to work and customers will continue paying your bills.

      • Anonymous

Actually, ZTE blade has gingerbread update.
        http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices/zte-blade
My colleague upgraded his phone and he is enjoying the bugfixes and improved performance already.

This is exactly why Motorola does not want you to get an upgrade, if your phone worked better and better, they cant market newer models with high price stickers anymore.

  • Dblack48

    photon not getting it?

    • Anonymous

We want to remind everyone that we are continuing technical evaluation to determine which devices will be upgraded to ICS — and we will communicate this as information becomes available.

      • Willsonic

We appreciate the reply. The issue for Photon owners is that the Bionic and Photon were released less than 40 days apart. Some of us waited forever Motorola to release a high-end phone on Sprint, and are surprised that Motorola would not consider the Photon to be every bit as worthy of an official announcement regarding ICS at the Bionic was.

  • Adearana

Can you leave out the “value added” motorolla software? I just want ice cream.

Locked bootloaders and “value added” software overlays significantly impede the ability to quickly resolve bugs (and there are lots of them) and performance issues and keep pace with the rapidly evolving smartphone space. Being locked out of advancements while using relatively recent hardware devices is maddening. These devices are expensive and when a high end device is rapidly obsoleted by nothing more than misguided policies and greed the customer experience suffers. It’s unsustainable guys. The manufacturer / carrier combination that figures out how to keep devices performing optimally for at least two years will ultimately win.

  • Gregory L West

ATRIX please. Also, like virtually all of your other customers, I prefer an up to date and faster running system over a system with “value add” software on top of it. Please streamline your update process. Surely there will be a new version of android before most of your phones get the 4.0 update. Motorola will also likely have released a few new phones by then. The current system/process is fairly obviously not keeping pace with that of the smartphone market which your own company is driving forward by releasing who knows how many new android phones each year. You need to reallocate to keep your CURRENT customers happy so that they will be return customers.

This is upsetting. If I have a Google Experience device namely the Motorola Xoom, it is entirely devoid of Motorola add-ons. The drivers should be available, and the LTE is already accepted by Verizon, as is Android 4.0 ICS. What is it that is holding this back from being released?
If Dell can sell me a computer with Windows XP and I can update it myself the day s the software is released to Windows 7 why is this so hard for Cellular carriers Google and OEM’s? The world didn’t grind to a halt to make certain my computer ran Win 7, or Ubuntu, and Motorola and my ISP had no right to say if they approved of the upgrade and life went on. I have trouble believing that VZW or Motorola need to take this long, and I resent the fact that they want to control my experience of the device I purchased. This is a gob of spit ion the face of the consumer. It has become a kick in the pants of our rights of ownership.

Let me upgrade my own devices, and save yourselves the efforts of branding my OS in my best interests.

  • Gurpreetarg

:( Motorola Atrix still not in list. This is waste of nice piece of hardware.

  • Anonymous

I think a nice option would be to offer people the option to unlock their phone when the manufacturer decides to no longer update it, so that those that care can still install a custom, up-to-date rom.

  • http://profiles.google.com/fengzhe77 Joe Feng

Would the wi-fi only tablets get the upgrade much sooner, since there’s no carriers to deal with?

  • Anonymous

I’ll simplify that for you, Moto:
    1. Decrypt the bootloader signature.
    2. Go to XDA.

There. I’ve cut out 2 steps and saved you all 3-5 months and a bunch of cash. I’ll expect my consultant check in the mail.

LMFAO at Android users right now. How much of this stuff can you guys actually take?

    • Anonymous

Unlike the iPhone, Android users don’t need to jailbreak to be able to properly own their phones.

Also, the good work that XDA Developers and Cyanogen guys do means that Android users *can* install OS updates before waiting for the handset manufacturers/carriers.

      • dan

Wait, you just said Android users don’t need to jailbreak their devices to properly own them, then cited two modders that let you properly own your phones.

        Which is it?

        • Anonymous

No, I meant being able to install and access content from wherever you want, instead of being handcuffed to iTunes. This is fully owning a device.

The second sentence was a different topic, namely, if you want the updates you can install a mod yourself. This is not related to ownership.

          • Anonymous

What makes you think you can only install content from iTunes?

          • Kunoichi27

To install content other than from what’s in iTunes, iphone users have to jailbreak their phone.

          • Kunoichi27

To do that, iphone users have to jailbreak their phones first.

I own a Moto Defy, Such a great piece of hardware it is, However the software is a lackluster with all the bloatware and locked bootloader, I’m quite dissapointed that it won’t get a ICS update, like many other phones by Motorola, I wish Motorola could understand that the customer reputation is what matters when you are in the phone industry, Locking bootloaders and making the customer feel like a dumbass doesn’t help, even if motorola doesn’t have time to update these devices for free, they could just release the third party devs a way to do that, like HTC and Samsung themselves do, The guys at the CM9 branch of the defy are crawling to get ICS working on this beauty

hey look… it’s an apple fan boy sneaking into Moto blogs to see when he can actually dump his iphone for an android. The only thing keeping him back is what was just explained by Motorola and some of the users. I dare you to keep your iphone stock, I bet you will love it huh? Android OWNS out of the box and since lots of android users are geeks, they like the fact that they can play around with their phones, try different mods etc. etc. It’s more of a privilege than a curse… oh by the way… did you EVER see fan boys post on Galaxy S2 blogs like this? NOOOO… because Galaxy S2 owns iphone! The only thing they got on GS2 is that stupid Siri… who uses that all the time?

    Way too long.

  • Anonymous

Here’s the thing, Motorola: You and the carriers you work with need to be more responsive to customers. It’s just that simple.

I don’t like or appreciate the fact that a carrier and hardware maker are dragging their feet on me having the best possible experience with a phone I’ve bought. You need to understand that we have choices, both for hardware and carriers and we will most definitely exercise those choices. I know I will if I find that I’m sitting here in March running an old version of Android via Motorola and Sprint (Photon 4G). And I’m not falling for this finger-pointing crap between you and Sprint. If you guys don’t get your thumbs extracted together, you will both suffer in future sales.

Further, I have not a sliver of doubt that ‘m not alone in loathing the software that the manufacturers and carriers are slathering on top of Android. In the rosiest possible circumstances, this crap is a nuisance; more often, it’s worse than that. The fact that you think that this is a reason to slow-roll updates is brain-dead. Value-added? You have got to be kidding.

If Motoblur and Sprint ID are so great, sell it to me on the merits rather than holding me hostage to it. Make me want to download it from the Android store or your website or the carrier’s web site AFTER I have my new OS. If you lack the confidence to win my usage on that basis, then you really ought to reflect on why you’re making what is surely a costly development effort.

You guys really need to get this through your collective head: You either move at Internet speed in providing a first-class mobile experience, or prepare yourself to see your customers run away from you at twice that speed.

    Your move.

  • font9a

Golly Motorola, you guys sure know how to “add value” to your devices!

  • Anonymous

    Glad I bought an iPhone.

    • Jack

It’s impossible to buy an iPhone. You can only rent one. If you actually owned an iPhone, Apple would give you the ability to install any apps you want on it, forever, without paying taxes to Apple.

  • http://twitter.com/bergjames James Berg Martinez

Hey, Motorola! Count me in too on Ice Cream Sandwich’s serving for Motorola Atrix 4G! Don’t worry, folks! I am hopeful that Motorola will not let us down about updating our phones. One thing I can tell for sure, though, I am 90% sure that Motorola’s ICS updating is laid out within two main premises: whether our phones are capable of running Ice Cream Sandwich and whether our phones are in an 18-month lifespan (right after release date).

  • Anonymous

Took my 2year-old 3GS just 1hr after iOS 5 was out. I know your pain! ;)

  • Anonymous

By the time the update is ready, you should be ready to buy a new phone. The carriers and Moto know this. This is why there is little interest in quickly releasing an update. An update generates no income. Only new phone sales do.

    • Jim

True but I won’t buy from Moto again if they won’t support a phone that is barley a year old. I’ve already read that the really expensive keyboard and screen I bought (lapdock) won’t work with the new Atrix so I am even less inclined to upgrade. My 5 year old iPod still works with modern docking stations and car audio receivers. If Moto can’t even give me one year of compatibility then why would I spend my money on the next phone?? I was going to buy the Xoom but not until I see there will be some longevity so they’ve already lost some $$ from me. If there is no ICS for the Atrix that will be it for me and Moto and I go back the old DP550 days with them.

OMG. It’s as if they are trying to launch the Space Shuttle. What a fucked up process. Six months to get through this is generous

All those Motorola phones… with no software upgrades going forward. Pretty shitty

  • JT

The people waiting 6 months for ICS don’t care one whit about your “differentiated experiences”. It’s embarassing that people who buy your phones have to wait so long for ICS, and that even slightly older phones (Atrix) likely won’t ever get this. Has to make everyone question the decision to buy a Motorola phone in the first place.

  • http://my2cents4theday.blogspot.com Don Williams

What a bunch of bull! Really, if you have to give a long, convoluted excuse you’ve basically admitted the ICE is a big FAIL!

  • http://profiles.google.com/astrofra François Gutherz

How much resource is Motorola able to put on this ICS issue ?

Wouldn’t it be easier if you hadn’t released a dozen of almost identical phones but still hardwarely slightly different ?… Apple doesn’t have this problem, they made 5 phones, hence their dev teams can properly focus their efforts on each software upgrades.

Btw, no plan to update the Defy+ with ICS ? The Defy+ comes with more horsepower than the iPhone4, c’mon :’)

  • Anonymous

Motorola, no one wants your crappy MotoBlur skin or your crappy customizations. If they do then give them the opportunity to download it from your website or the Android market. Give people the stock Android experience they want. Your “value added” additions are nothing but garbage that just slows down the update process. Why can’t you clowns figure this out. Hopefully, Google will straighten your idiotic decisions once they start making the calls.

  • Steve Wayda

If you don’t upgrade the Atrix 4g I’m going to be very upset. The phone isn’t even a year old and you already made an Atrix 2. Upgrade the Atrix 4g to ICS or I will never buy another Motorola product again and I will convince my friends to do the same.

  • https://market.android.com/search?q=puzzleduck&so=1&c=apps PuZZleDucK

but you’ve missed something, android is an “ADVERTISING PLATFORM” for Google… Who are constantly updating and improving Android. The better it is, the longer you stay, the more adds are served. Carriers are the ones who want you to “buy” another phone.

  • Unlock Defy bootloader!

As a Defy-owner I certainly don’t expect Motorola to issue any official Gingerbread- or even ICS-upgrade anymore. That is disappointing but… it seems to be the way MOTO deals with its customers. MOTO marketing will eventually find out, that this strategy affects future-sales (i.e. when large numbers of previous customers not only starts buying elsewhere but also discourages theirs friends and family from buying a MOTO device).

The real showstopper for me however is the fact that months ago MOTO promised (somewhat vaguely) to open the bootloaders by the end of the year (if carriers gave consent – which should be irrelevant for retail devices) but still nothing has happened.
I have no problem using an after market firmware (like Cyanogen or MIUI) to keep my device up-to-date (especially since the hardware-specs support it), but it seems that without an open bootloader, upgrading those to ICS might be a problem…

So MOTO: try not to alienate too many customers and provide an update to unlock the bootloader of the Defy!

  • James

Excellent news! I will be returning my Bionic for an ICS based Verizon Nexus Thursday, nor will I be buying any stock in the ‘long term evolution’ of Motorola. Interestingly enough, the price of a Bionic has also dropped to $49 which might just irritate a few people that paid $200+ last month. Perhaps it has to do with the 2 hour battery life, maybe the Droid 4? But with regards to physical design, I am astounded to find out that the battery on a Motorola Razr is non-removable. That should certainly ease any decision between the latest phone hardware, long term OS updates, an unlocked bootloader for development, and the ability to have a second battery charged. Hopefully there’s a reset button on it, or it better not ‘fall into the wrong hands,’ especially someone caught in a boot loop. My hope is that as your customers leave, you’ll begin to listen.

  • http://rcsheets.myopenid.com/ Robert C. Sheets

I hope at least someone at Motorola is aware that the end users who buy your devices generally don’t need, want, or care about the “carrier customizations” that often add nothing of value, and surely add a significant burden to the process of getting a new Android release ready for use on a given device.

  • http://www.facebook.com/cdenigris Chris DeNigris

I bought a Motorola Atrix and a Motorola Xoom this year. I was upset to see when the Atrix 2 came out only 8 months after buying my Atrix 1. The Atrix 2 was a downgrade in every category except camera so I don’t even understand what the reasoning is for that at Motorola.

The Xoom is a nice device but 6 months later it feels bulky compared to other tablets, the ports are a huge plus though. Android Honeycomb has been disappointing because of the lack of App development. Simple apps like an official Facebook and SiriusXm tablet optimized versions are lacking. I don’t understand why the push for this has not been made and Android loses to Apple for these reasons but it has so much potential to beat Apple.

My Atrix 1 which AT&T sold me under “4g” in Feb 2011 was an HSPA+ phone (6x faster then 3g)
In November AT&T released 4G LTE which is apparently different (10x faster then 3g)

The ATRIX 4g is not even LTE compatible so it is not a true 4G phone as advertised.

I feel like I was duped into the 4g scheme and I will be contacting the New York State attorney general about this complaining about AT&T’s practices.

I have told friends all year that Motorola seemed to be making a big come back but if my Atrix 1 does not get the ICS update then quite frankly I’m not even going to even bother buying another Motorola phone next time I will go with Samsung. Motorola better have the right play here or I’m not coming back!

  • Anonymous

The EternityProject Team is patiently waiting for the update or, at least, the promised unlockable bootloader on the RAZR, as RETAIL devices (as Moto said) should already have an unlockable BL.
Moto, get a speed up. Please.

  • http://twitter.com/SamuelRodgers Sam Rodgers

I got tired of waiting for updates on my DroidX, so I just last week upgrades to the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Nobody on the face of the earth likes Motoblur. On top of all the info Motorola listed above, there is the terribleness that is Motorola’s personal Android “skin” they put on top of it all. There is virtually no wait time for updating the Galaxy Nexus or Nexus S. If more phone makers would stop trying to make Android “their own” and just adhere to the Google-suggested info, it would go faster. Not all phones would need to be the same, they could be upgraded from there, but there is no reason that each manufacturer needs to go through exactly what Google already does just cause they can’t make a logical line of products to work with the OS. Android is awesome the way it is!

    • http://twitter.com/ZombieLove69 michael arazan

Well if motorola won’t release a date for ICS, guess I’ll be getting a galaxy nexus instead of waiting till june for an ICS update on a Razr. I have had Motorola smart phones and always seems to be a 4-6 month process for an update. Which sucks, cause I don’t care for samsung phones. Hope they release a date for ICS.

Keeping customers in the dark is something that needs to be changed about phones and updates.

Can’t wait for the first Google/Motorola Nexus That will probably be the best phone ever.

I just wish to thank all the comments posted here. It sure was an eye opener!! Made it very easy to chose my next phone. On the 8th of January, my birthday, im buying a new smartphone. I love the looks of the droid razr but……no way!! Im buying the new Samsung nexus because ot runs ICS. I used to be a Motorola costumer, then someone offered me a Samsung Galaxy Gio and i got to know and love android OS. If the Droid Razr had the IceCreamSandwich that would defenitly be my choice but im not buying it and be waiting untill next Summer for the update. Sorry Motorola. Your loss! Bitch, Bitch, Bitch, Bitch, Bitch. All they are trying to do is make our phones better and simpler to maintain by making all up to date phones run the same OS thus no more problems.

“This is also the time when we begin integrating all of the Motorola-specific software enhancements into the source code. Features like MotoCast, Smart Actions, and our comprehensive enterprise solutions are integral parts of our device experiences, and we want to make sure we continue delivering differentiated experiences for our consumers with these software upgrades.”

This is also the reason many of your customers are not loyal to the Motorola brand, your customer satisfaction ratings are lower than you would like, and your market share is being unnecessarily reduced by competitor offerings.

If you want more market share, higher profit margins, and REPEAT customers, then offer those supposedly “value added” software as exclusive Android Market Apps -including the Motorola modified launcher, browser, etc.

The longer you ruin the Android experience by ignoring what customers want, the more you will lose customers to your competitors.

In fact, if Motorola focused solely on providing the most compelling hardware to complement the PUREST ANDROID EXPERIENCE (and thereby fastest upgrades) that would instantly give Motorola the market differentiation to stand above the competition more than any “value added” software customization of could provide.

I repeat, the longer you ruin the Android experience by ignoring what customers want, the more you will lose customers to your competitors.

You have the ability to win the smartphone war. You have the right hardware. You have the right OS. All that remains is the courage to use the right strategy.

Motorola Atrix 4G must receive ICS as it was a flagship Motorola device which was just released early this year. It won’t be fair at all if it doesn’t receive ICS.

Another major flaw: You can no longer access your contact list while entering email addresses in the Messaging/Email app. Prior to GB, you could pull up your contact list and pick up to 20 addresses at a time (you could also repeat the process to add additional batches of 20 addresses until you had everyone you wanted).

This, plus the hardware buttons rarely turning on in a dark room, are the worst of the problems with GB on the Droid X that I’ve seen. (There are many others, as you noted, but these are the ones that hurt me the most.)

Moto NEEDS to look at development. To have unlocked devices doesn't LOSE the company money. It GETS them money. Customers judge phones based on the development behind it. The Bionic has 3 custom ROMs out in 3 months. Nexus has 13 in 2 weeks.

  • Anonymous

Same here. As much as I love the slick designs of Moto phones, I glimpsed a colleague’s Nexus, it was sweet – maybe no gorilla glass or kevlar cover, but who cares – if Samsung appreciates its customers more by giving them total choice/control over the hardware, then Samsung (or HTC) will win me out. I am most likely going to buy the Samsung Nexus.

I’m in the same hole but worse because the list that Motorola had for the phones that will be receiving ICS, it looks as if i wont be one of them because i’m using the Atrix. I could go and purchase the Nexus but i like the new OS from Motorola (gingerbread) and i’m not to fond of the Samsung brand ether. There widgets are cheesy looking, with some other shit i don’t care for. If Motorola converted some of Samsung’s UI gestures into there phones along with adding some quick tasks in the notification bar, then i would never leave them, but from what i just read i have to say this is pretty pathetic. the Atrix is a Dual-core $600 dollar smartphone, Motorola’s fist, and they are leaving Atrix users in the dust! i’m soon going to go buy a brick phone lol. I don’t wanna have to dl some leaked kernel rom version of ICS.

motorola believe me when i say this gonna be the last moto phone ill buy ever in my life..im switching to the nexus series..at least an old phone like nexus one…got gingerbread..

moto if you plan making customer buy new device by not updating the old one..then youre in serious problems…

the correct way its by updating phones and if customer feels its an old phone and want a better experience of ICS…then switch to a new one…ok let it flow naturally not by the force of not updating.. the only thing that keep me with my atrix its that im waitting the cyanogen mod 9 ICS..

my atrix has too many problems cause after the update to ginger bread…like unexpected reboot..etc…etc

    thanks…have a nice day

When is ICS coming for the Atrix? It is a really powerful device, if you are like Sony and shock everyone by releasing updates for almost all the phones, a lot of people will switch from Apple to Android. And I personally won’t regret my decision in buying the Atrix.

Hey Motorola, I really don’t care about you integrating in your “features” nor do the majority of people that buy smartphones.

Just give us vanilla ICS. I buy phones based off hardware specs and OS, not an individual company’s “customization” of the OS. There are plenty of apps out there to customize it anyway. You’re adding no more value than free apps.

I’ve been with T-mobile for many years but when the Atrix 4g came out, with specs so close to the Iphone 4 but dual core, an easily replaceable battery, micro-sd card support, gorilla glass, high dpi screen, discrete graphics, I thought this was the right choice.
The price drop to $99 (vs $199 for iphone) and a contract with at&t (the only negative) made the choice a natural one for me. I’d live wih at&t’s contract and their price and enjoy support from Motorola. I even got an upgrade from froyo to gb a week in.
Now I see nothing concrete from Motorola with regard to an upgrade path only a tenuous,”we are evaluating”post that tells us nothing.
Now I see my top of the line phone at walmart for $0.99 and no clear upgrade path.
As a customer, I’m done with Motorola, done with Android, done with At&t. I’m voting with my wallet. Get ICS out for atrix and the rest of the phones (customers) if you think it will help you save face. It might make some people happy.
Take a moment to look at this situation from your customer’s point of view; I’m now stuck with a phone that I am forced to keep for another year and a half due to contract, and you have the gall to tell me you aren’t going to keep it’s os current. Thanks. Don’t do me any favors.
I haven’t seen anything so compelling on android to make me want to stay. Thanks for the experiment, I’m going back to Apple. The benefits over there far outweigh the dismal user experience Motorola provided. Good job.

Will I be able to upgrade my Droid 2 to ICS?

  • Jaimecampos247516

How is the ATRIX not evaluated yet
the ATRIX was released almost a year ago and yet it is still more powerful than 75 percent of the phones on the market
I love this phone and I would say that everyone that has had this phone would say the same
from the fingerprint scanner that is more than a godsend, though I have read that most people don’t use it, its definitely because of ignorance sure at first its a lil finicky but after a while it gets easier to use and opens the first time everytime. To the ridiculously awesome camera. I have mine rooted and I can tell you that with it overclocked there is nothing this phone can’t do and nothing that can stop it or slow it down and even normally its faster than every iphone I’ve ever seen and any other android I’ve ever encountered
I’ve tested its limits and had this phone download a 1 gb file from my wifi and AT&T (to the internal storage and then to the sd) to test how slow it would be and at the same time I had it move 5gbs of info from the sd to the phone and vice versa I did all this in every permutation on one charge without the phone being overclocked it got down to 20 percent and there was no perceptible lag
there are phones that don’t deserve the update the BACKFLIP is one
I had that phone and I loved it then I came to the ATRIX and I saw the future
im sure everyone would agree that updating the ATRIX is in the best interest of everyone sure you have the ATRIX 2 now but this phone is still years ahead of the competition even tho its a year old
it can and will handle any and every update to come for the next year or two

    • Alex Condie

I <3 the fingerprint reader. It used to be pretty bad on 2.2 but when i got 2.3.4 it started working much better. although it's starting to wear out from use… :/ atrix needs an update pronto or imma be pissed.

  • Tien Cheng

    hey motorola:

bring ics to atrix otherwise i will never bought any motorola phones again
those phones by HTC . Samsung , Sony are much better at least their company care about their customers
even LG will upgrade LG 2X to ics
our more expensive “most powerful phone” is now an orphan

btw u guys just don’t really care your international customers
in the motorola forum get “US forum” “non-us forum”
what the hell is that, u motorola think us market is far more important ?

this poor software suport is causing death of motorola
remember few years ago, samsung phones sucks and no one would love to use them
and now samsung SGII, Note have already gain a great market share

but what have moto done :
a shrinking market share, losing customers

selling phones isn’t only about selling but the altitude to your buyers, support and convince them to buy another phone from the company.
but moto has done a great job of forcing your buyers to switch to another company

    thunb up motorola

I hope You will provide Atrix 4G users with ICS. You should care about your flagship model users.

    • Alex Condie

      AGREED.

  • Atrix Owner who want his ICS!!

Add me to that list!… this is my first Android phone, and although it is a great phone and does even more than I need, I want ICS. I just got a SE MW600 BT and it DOES NOT show song titles and contact names on calls. I don’t even know how it is friggin’ possible, but Gingerbread seems to be using ACRCP 1.0 and not 1.3 or 1.4!!! I am very much hoping that ICS is going to have this MUCH NEEDED update!! And I am far from alone. I have seen many others in exactly my same situation… but anyhoo, give me my damn Ice Cream Sandwich! (sounds like a bratty kid… I know ;-)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MDXNP656BR2D2XO56QJ5OXJ6AM Plex

I love my Photon. It’s fast, has loads of storage, and if you know what you’re doing, you can customize it (like ALL Android phones) until you’re blue in the face. People complain about “Not Moto-Blur”, but all of the whining can be rectified by using a different launcher and different widgets. I’m using Go Launcher with transparent Go Widgets, and it’s fast, stable, and looks phenomenal. As far as ICS goes, of course I want it. And I think in due time it will be released for the Photon. However, what people fail to realize, is that Motorola can’t just take ICS and directly port it to every phone the minute it’s released. Every phone has different hardware that makes it unique, and it takes time to get everything working properly(camera, kickstand, etc). The same people complaining about the time it’s taking are the same ones that would be crying like little girls if Motorola released a shoddy update without proper testing and their hardware or apps didn’t work. So either give them time to do it, or root your phone, unlock the bootloader, and flash the rom of your choice. It’s actually quite simple unless you’re a mouth breather. Haha

My only complaint thus far is that Motorola hasn’t given us the option to unlock our bootloaders. As it stands, you can unlock the bootloader yourself, but it breaks 4G in the process. I’m a firm believer that we should be able to do whatever we want with the hardware we purchase, and anything that inhibits that is almost a deal breaker for me. This is my first Motorola phone, and although I’m very impressed with the hardware, I wish I would have researched the bootloader issue a little more before I bought it. But it is what it is. It’s still a great phone, and I can be patient until a proper unlocking procedure is realized. I had gingerbread running on my old Hero almost as soon as it was released, and had no issues with the bootloader at all. HTC makes some great phones as well, and the company itself realized that users wanted the ability to unlock their bootloaders and responded by releasing the ability to do so in a safe way. I only hope that Motorola responds in kind. They have a lot of powerful hardware, and it serves them well to not only give the customers what they want, but also open the door for the innovation the android community is famous for. If we wanted subpar hardware, fewer customization options, and the inability to remove the battery or upgrade storage, we would have joined the Iphone zombies who obviously don’t seem to care that they’re using inferior hardware and get a hard on playing Angry Birds on their Rectal Displays. I mean, Retina. I’ll take Android over that piece of shit any day.

    Peace

  • Anonymous

well motorola, you’ve just made a lifelong enemy. no upgrade for the atrix? less than twelve months ago you were selling it as the most powerful smartphone on the planet. i will actively discourage my friends, colleagues and customers from using your products.

    you’re just being greedy.

    • Alex Condie

They keep saying “they are still deciding which phones will get ics” so it’s not a definite no for the atrix. but it might as well be. they wouldn’t have this problem if they didn’t release a phone every godamn month.

  • Anonymous

Taking too long.. It might not be of any great help actually but may I request to you guys to update us on what phase are we in now?

    1. Merge and adapt the new release for different device hardware architecture(s) and carrier customizations
    2. Stabilize and ‘bake’ the result to drive out bugs
    3. Submit the upgrade to the carriers for certification
    3.5 Perform a Customer pre-release
    4. Release the upgrade

I’m pretty sure that custom rom will be released sooner but I really love Motoblur.. So If ever I will be setting my ICS on my RAZR, I want it to be from you guys..

    More power!

  • Alex Ip

    Well? Atrix or not?

I purchased my Atrix less than a year ago. It was a premium product marketed on the basis of its computing power. If Motorola is prepared to ditch support for such a product after less than a year, then it defeats the purpose of trying to future-proof by investing in premium hardware.

If Motorola does not make ICS available for the Atrix, then I will most likely install a custom version (without all the Motorola extensions). After that, the Atrix will probably be the the last Motorola phone I will purchase, as I will then move to “disposable” hardware from cheaper vendors.

Because the Atrix clearly exceeds the performance requirements for ICS, I regard this as a commercial decision rather than a technical one. Overall, I have been very pleased with the Atrix but I would be extremely annoyed if it is not upgraded to the current version of Android less than a year after I purchased it.

    • Alex Condie

I’m in the same boat. It was called the most powerful smartphone in the world, as well as the only dual core phone. I still love this thing. If a FLAGSHIP phone isn’t supported this soon after launch, that’s pathetic.

Please update the Atrix to 4.0!

    • Alex Condie

      Agreed.

  • Alex Condie

IDEA. Why doesn’t Moto stop releasing phones every month???? Then it wouldn’t become so overwhelming to keep them all updated. Example: the Droid X2, Bionic and RAZR. Similar phones. Nearly identical form factor (width varies a bit). The Bionic was a tiny bit better than the X2 and the RAZR a bit better than the Bionic. Seems extremely pointless because nobody’s gonna upgrade to a new phone when theirs is only a couple months old. Same case for me on AT&T. I bought the Atrix 4g when it was top of the line. 6 months later the Atrix 2 comes along. The screen is a bit bigger and the camera improved a bit. ONLY IMPROVEMENTS. Please Moto. Stop doing this. Focus on making a phenomenal phone, like the Atrix, and then SUPPORT IT. If I don’t see ICS on my Atrix I will be incredibly disappointed. Me, and all the countless others in this comment page will be seeking elsewhere when buying a new phone if our phones aren’t supported. The original Atrix is not even a year old.

    • Anonymous

Sounds like you need to switch to iPhone which is only refreshed once a year.

      • Marcos Eliziario

Yeah, and with an IPhone you still receive updates for years. My fucking old iPad, more than one year and a half older than my atrix, still gets the latest iOS versions. My atrix came from factory with an already out of date android, loaded with this piece of shit from hell called motoblur?
Come on, what is the only reason for motoblur to exist, beyond keeping the job of the fucktard executive who is in charge of it?
But, I am the one to blame, years buying motorola crap and still haven’t learned. The thief who stole my milestone was doing me a favor, but I was blind and went there buying this atrix.

    • Anonymous

Are u crazy? ???the bionic is not even in the same league as the razr! The Reason they come out with so many phones is because technology is changing everyday And thankfully they did do that cuz otherwise we would not end up with the most superior phone on the market the droid razor. I have a feeling that because they produced such a superior phone you may see the release is slow down.

      • Walkit4u

That is funny… They have already released the razr maxxx lol

    • Usman Ahmed

Totally agreed besides Atrix 4G has lots of brilliant features like the fingerprint sensor and first hdmi so atrix is quite important and popular enough to deserve ICS >.<

That’s why this Atrix I have will be the last Motorola phone I will ever have, as soon as I get tired of it I will get an IPhone. Tired of having to unlock bootloaders, installing ROMs with the ever present fear of bricking my device.
For God’s sake, my mon’s IPhone 3GS, centuries old, still get updates from apple. I am a sucker for not having bought an IPhone.

      • Stevemoss

I dumped my iPhone4 for the Atrix 4G. If motorola keep flooding us with variations of the same hardware and they stop supporting them, then I will probably find another company or just move back to apple. At least I know apple will support their devices. I expect ICS or I walk.

nobody’s talking about it cause nobody bought it. you can’t come out with an incredible phone like the atrix and then release a sequel 6 months later that’s marginally better. but atrix 2 needs ICS just as much as the OG atrix.

  • Alex Condie

    iphone is garbage.

quite ridiculous if motorola abandons atrix so quickly. i would be pretty ticked.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ali.alghafli Ali Al Ghafli

what!!, I thought there is no question that atrix 2 is going to get ICS, mine is atrix 4g mb860, didnt like it for so many reasons and now it seems that it would be one of the few dual core phones that are not going to be updated to the ICS, I should have waited for what ever next phone samsung is going to bring.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Shawn-Christian-Simms/1016076288 Shawn Christian Simms

I do kind of see why people prefer iOS over Android, and that’s because they are guaranteed the next update. I don’t like that my device may not even get ICS, and almost encourages me to go with a different OS due to the fact that my device won’t necessarily be obsolete in a relatively short period of time. That’s really the only thing about Android that really bothers me.

  • Turk971

Not really…see i have just bought my Defy a month ago…and i am going to buy another moto for my wife probably razr…however, if i will not get ICS for my defy then they will not generate a new sale from me…had been a moto user ever since (this is already my 4th moto)…but this time, it looks like i’m going to be hugely disappointed with how they treat their customers…if nothing really positive happens, negative word of mouth will definitely explode…just remember moto social media is hugely popular now and it has toppled despots…i hate to see it topple a respectable company as well….

  • Matúš Hennel

Any update? Is Atrix going to get ICS? I’m 100% sure it technically is able to …

  • Anonymous

I liked the part about wanting to make sure to offer a differentiated experience. That made me laugh.

If Motorola were to offer their entire line of phones with pure Android experiences, timely updates for any hardware that would support it and unlocked bootloaders, they WOULD be differentiating!

As it stands, Moto is just offering more of the same thing Samsung and HTC are offering…bloat, lag and buyer’s remorse.

Here’s a thought: instead of bogging down your phones with “features” your customers might not want, offer them as (exclusive) installable/uninstallable apps. It really wouldn’t be that hard to package Smart Actions, the extra widgets, or even the launcher as installable .apk files that verify “Moto” hardware during the install. Then, you could release your pure Android update to the masses and update the apps separately. People get a lot less annoyed by a widget that needs an update than by being told their OS update is being pushed back due to “incompatibilities with differentiation software.”

I have always loved Motorola’s phones but I’m sorry to say that until they get their act together on the software side, I’m a Nexus guy from here on out.

You do not mention upgrading the Photon. I was told it has cpu/memory capacity for the A 4.0. You should know I was sold on the EVO and ended up with a Photon due to a maintenance problem with the EVO. Now I find the Photon has many features I love that were not in the EVO and would get another Photon.

This experience should show you the validity of comments about people leaving Motorola and Sprint behind if they don’t keep up. There was court case (with Iphone) that said the service provider could not control what users put on their phones. It is understandable Motorola and Sprint don’t want maintenance problems due to bad apps and rooted phones, but that shouldn’t equate to using only locked cell phones.

Pay attention also to references to how people use their computers. A few years back, you could connect up to the internet without using a web provider who loaded its web site with it’s applications for you to wade through before you could get to the internet. Some people didn’t even know there was an internet out side of their providers web site. Now, ISP’s mostly just get you online. Don’t be surprised if that isn’t the future of cell phones.

Lastly, listen to the outrage when Microsoft was caught collected data secretly from their OS’s. Android and Iphone, its the Mac / PC competition all over again. If you’re not Apple, then you need to see what has happened to PCs.

  • Noneof Yourbusiness

I have been a Motorola user for about 4 years now, and I have to say unless things change I will not buy a Motorola again. What is wrong with whoever is in charge of your company, do you even read this forum? The first page alone is full of the same 2 complaints – You take the longest of all companies to release updates for droid and you keep putting Motoblur or whatever name you want to call it on your phones. It’s not rocket science it’s actually pretty damn simple, and from what I can see some of the people commenting below seem to have alot more of an idea about running a mobile phone compnay than your entire organisation.
I say for myself and probably the majority of other Motorola users out there this is your last chance, if you don’t get your act together by the time my Atrix fails, you’ve lost me as a customer. Please start listening to the market we are not all school children who use our phones for social networking.

  • Marcos Eliziario

No. Google is acquiring Motorola, this is an ongoing process so far, has not been completed, and it’s going to take a long time after that to integrate. And google even has hinted that Motorola is going to be operated as an autonomous business unit (which is a terrible decision IMHO),
Even LG manages to churn out phones with more recent versions of android than Motorola. When I bought my Atrix, it actually came with a version of android older than the older LG phone I donated to my wife.
I am really getting tired of all this thing of having to install custom ROMs to have a decently recent OS on my phone. Have zero of those problems with my more than 2 years old ipad 1. My next phone will not be a Motorola for sure.

  • Marcos Eliziario

Because the Atrix is a Motorola product, and motorola is ran by a bunch of clowns.

  • Marcos Eliziario

Got a droid, a click, then a milestone, now a Atrix. My experience is: don’t count on motorola updating even Atrix 2, it’s not going to happen.

  • Marcos Eliziario

No, we don’t have to jailbreak to cough cough run pirate apps cough cough to properly own my phone.
We have to unlock the bootloader on our atrix and void our warranty to install a custom ROM on it and lose some functionality like the fingerprint sensor in order to have a minimally up-to-date OS in our very powerful phones. While at the same time, even a modest hardware like the IPhone 3 gets the latest IOS.

  • Marcos Eliziario

And by doing so, voiding his warranty, because there’s a fucking fuse which is gone after you unlock atrix bootloaders, and if any problem that’s not even remotely related to unlock the phone happens to happen, you’re toast without warranty.

  • Marcos Eliziario

At least they don’t have a “fuse” make them void their warranty as soon as they jailbreak their phones.

  • Marcos Eliziario

Waterfall software development at it’s finest.

  • Marcos Eliziario

stable. bug free update. Man, did you actually ever own any motorola android phone?

  • Marcos Eliziario

Your process are a failure. You spend an unholy amount of time pushing papers and gantt charts from one side to the other. Stop that crap six-sigma thing, this serves only to give employment to paper-pusher bureaucrats. Automate your fucking tests, for god’s sake.
You probably spend far more man hours planning how to update those freaking things, having meetings and writing project planning documents than actually writing software. That’s why things take so much time, that’s why your software sucks. Fire the PMPs, fire the useless six-sigma black belts, concentrate on writing great software, on having good tests for it, on refactoring it continually. stop sucking, you’re shaming yourselves this way.

  • harshboy

when is the ICS update for ATRIX 4G??

  • Kevin

Hey, Motorola, you promised the ICS update for the Xoom within 6 weeks of the source code release. Why hasn’t it been released yet for the Xoom lte model?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1424365181 Ben Sandler

I am both shocked and perplexed by the fact that the Motorola Photon will not be receiving the Android 4.0 update. Initially, it is both the most powerful and expensive Motorola phone on Sprint at the moment. It’s brother and sister phones on AT&T and Verizon are being updated but not the one on Sprint. This makes me feel like Motorola are not paying any attention to their thousands upon thousands of loyal users on the Sprint network, making us not want to be as loyal to the once great Motorola name.

Second, I find this decision confusing because this phone came out in August while the Bionic only came out a month later. I find this extremely disconcerting as Apple will ensure it’s phones are running the latest OS for a full four years while apparently four months is too much for this company.

This is really aggravating to a loyal Motorola customer and makes me want to switch over to Apple products.

  • Michael Dantone

Droid X2 and ICS please!! Add me to the list of defectors if this doesn’t happen! GB on the X2 sucks! Froyo was much smoother and less buggier.. Gladly will wait for an effective ICS release than wasting more time on a GB fix.

Most carriers require you to keep your phone for at least two years. Phones are expensive when you don’t buy them through contract, and who has the money to just go out and buy a phone at the no contract price every year? Maybe you are fortunate enough to be able to do that, but the general populace are not.

This is ridiculous… I spent HUGE money on my Atrix and accessories which was marketed as the mother of all Android phones under a year ago and now Moto is turning their back on us while porting ICS over to the Xoom? This hardware is MORE than capable of running the OS smoothly as inferior Tegra2 designs are slated to get the update.

Motorola should also be ashamed of attempting to market a vastly inferior and (proven) slower performing set of hardware as the Atrix2. If Moto does not provide ICS for us Atrix owners, I will most assuredly tell the hundreds of people that come to me with technology questions and seeking advice that Motorola now sucks fountains of dick and is a greedy and untrustworthy company.

The DROID X2 ICS upgrade in the US is in the evaluation and planning phase. During this phase, we evaluate the benefits, technical issues and user experience of an upgrade. Generally, we are not able to provide release dates in this stage. There are also some cases in which we can state that an upgrade will happen but are not able to provide a release date. Also, please note that some products that enter the Evaluation and Planning phase may not complete the upgrade cycle.

The ATRIX 4G MB860 ICS upgrade will roll out in the US in Q3 2012.

For Bell Canada as well? I’m not seeing it listed. PLEASE let us get ICS.

thanks pal! better late than never!

  • Lucas

Devs are porting ICS to Defy, so Atrix should get it !
And please give a solution for Defy’s bootloader so it will be easier for devs to port ICS to Defy.
It’s acctually working, there are still some bugs and other things don’t work properly (camera for example) so if you unlock Defy bootloader it would be great !!

Of course you won’t do that because you want me to change my phone, but seriously!!! It’s water resistant !!! I don’t wanna change it, especially now that it is possible that devs finally port ICS to Defy.
Maybe if you realease a Defy 2 with dual core 1gb ram I would change it. Oh, and that lie about the Defy+ is shameful.
Seriously, if there’s not another Motorola “life proof” device in the future I will chose LG or Samsung or even Huawei (that comes with ICS without any brand UI) and have a have much better after-sales service.

  • Lucas

that’s not business strategy, that is the way to lead a company into bankruptcy. And more considering the competition, if Motorola was the only brand of phones we would have no other choice, but there are many brands to choose from!

  • Lucas

    that’s the whooooole truth !!!
    unlock bootloaders !!!

It is 2/20/2012. I have the Motorola XOOM Wifi only tablet. I can’t get the ICS update on my tablet. It says it’s up to date. The update rolled out last month! Anyone have any idea what is going on?

  • Havokeff

I beat the crap out of my Atrix daily, riding, working on bikes… doing other questionable things that routinely have it coming out of my vest pocket and onto the floor. It works just as good today as when I bought it in October. The finger print scanner especially. Maybe you got the only lemon of the bunch that I’ve heard about, but I would check everything and make sure all the proper software is installed and working.

Motorola does not have any shame? launches a new device, I mean the Defy Plus MB526 and do not support ICS? Please be based on Sony Ericson Xperia Atulizaa entire line 2011 for motorola ICS and as always the only company that does not anything about anything, please create shame in the face, the finances of the motorola has to fall a good bit to feel a chaqualhão in your pocket and continue to streamline an outdated sitema called MOTOBLUR motorola nowadays would be called MOTOFAIL. No one wants to have an ounce of consideration for the customer simply make troxa out that the quality of products motorola is extremely poor start to speed up the motorola does not go bankrupt very soon because everyone dodges away as possible from the masi phones motorola . Unfortunately I was one of the suckas that comporu a motorola but this is also the first and last at least for motorola min never I preserve my money and I will not invest in junk phones from Motorola! I stopped writing because they would not have continued masi space.

We all know the Vzw Razr ICS release is in development because we’ve seen the leaks. I am sure this is just Vzw trying to control the messaging of the update.

I own a Droid x2, love this machine, will probably own it for 2 or 3 more yrs. I came from a Droid 1 and the tech is amazing upgrade in a short time. I engoyed the gingerbread upgrade when it came and if I get ics I’m sure I will enjoy that too, but there’s nothing wrong with gingerbread if ics doesn’t come to this device. I bought this device knowing I would get gingerbread, no further claims were made. I like MOTOBLUR and like that Motorola takes the effort to tweak their systems to give a unique experience over other devices. I’ve been loyal to Motorola because the design build has always been solid and there hardware choices have been top of the line.

  • Sandersllc Bs

How come the upgrade isn’t allowed for droid x2 ?

  • http://twitter.com/foggie133 kenneth foggie

this is DISGUSTING !! how in the world do you only update TWO PHONES and tablet. i will NEVER BUY ANOTHER MOTOROLA PHONE again. i got the Motorola photon which was release 2 months before the bionic and similar specs. horrible.

  • Kitukampu

    Updating Defy+ would be great

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/UODBQOD7RP437GJ4HEPMGOGB5U Shady

I can never agree more Defy plus isn’t just a water proof and break resistance great phone, It also has such great hardware despite the 512m Ram and considered for it’s low price it’s basically everyone phone so it would be another fail 4 motorola to not care about it enough and move to other new phones leaving that company success proof behind with a low software like gingerbread 2.3.6!

  • Steve Niemeyer

Well you can completely disregard this entire article. All bullshit as of April 1st. Thank you Cheesecake, idiots, Verizon, Motorola and all the suits squeezing a buck more instead of doing what’s right for your customer. Communicating, debunking, and releasing. These are all done simultaneously while developing. FYI. No more Motorola phones. Ever.

  • Sashaiw

I honestly hope that there is no random UI styling for the ICS updates. Stock ICS is beautiful, and I would hate for it to be destroyed by a custom UI.

  • Anonymouse

I purchased a Droid3, which is apparently a dead-end phone that will not receive ICS. Because of this, and for a few other reasons, I will NEVER EVER *EVER* purchase a Motorola phone again! EVER!. I will tell *everyone* my story and will discourage everyone I talk to from ever buying a Motorola product. And, Unlike HTC, Motorola doesn’t even publish the stock firmware for their phones so we can easily go back to stock if we flash the phone with a different firmware.
    DONE WITH MOTOROLA!!!

  • Bj Woodly

I am very sorry I bought an Atrix 2 Android phone over an Iphone… I have never seen a system so slow in updating and transitioning. You can even jailbreak an iphone 3G to the latest operating system…All I can say is “Hello apple” when my pathetic Motorola contract expires in 2013.

  • Bob

    Please update DEFY+ to Android 4.0 !

  • Anonymous

I bought the xt910 Razr thinking that it would be as good or better than Samsung 2S… In the US it might be, I don’t know, but in Northern Europe, Motorola haven’t even bothered to release a bugfix for android 2.3.5. When I enquired about some issues about lagging in apps which flows perfectly on the galaxy S2 etc, their customer service told me that it was an issue with the apps and not the operating system. I tried to find a solution on my own on the internet, and I discovered that there was released an update that fixed the problems I was having. I contacted customer service again asking about this update, and they just said it wasn’t available in my area…

So, Motorola… You are just relaunching yourself in my country. Not many people bought your phone here, and those who did are probobably never touhing a Motorola-phone again. I am not a marketing specialist, but releasing phones with bugs and not doing anything about for 6 months can’t be good for business. You have a fix for my phone in the US. HOW hard can it be to just release it i europe too? I hope your ICS kicks ass, because it is going to take alot for me to buy another one of your devices.

    That’s all. Thanks

Hi there, the ICS upgrade for MOTOROLA PHOTON 4G is in development and rollout is scheduled to begin in Q4 2012.

  • Edrian Jose Quintos

iw asnt able to answer the survey for the soak test.. i was out of the country. anyway when will the official release?

  • Josh Plooster

    Jelly bean is out now

    • Logan Crowley

And VERY FEW Moto phones JUST saw the update to ICS, while most good companies like ASUS and Samsung have upgraded their newest months prior. Moto ranks with LG in delivery of updates, and its the reason my RAZR “broke” and kept “breaking” until they sent me a new phone. As for quality testing, the HTC Dream (yes, that’s the G1 for the uninitiated) had a stable ICS ROM before any of Motorola’s products. Its not that Motorola has to quality test these products (not like they do anyway) but that they just don’t care. They’ve got your money, why give you more for free?

I used to be able to tap the home button from the home location once and see a zoomed out view of all five screens at once and choose one. I am disappointed that that feature appears to be gone and I cannot figure out how to re enable it because I do not know what it was called and could not find a heading for it in the settings menu. I have the Droid RAZR MAXX.

we have been waiting for the atrix 4g ICS update for ages…. and if i dont get it in two months im not buying a motorola phone ever again and im sure im not the only one, we dont even mind if you release a crappy update and later improve or whatever you guys keep on doing to our old gingerbread update you just dont go silent on a dual core phone for more than 6 months , i dont think its fair at all!! WE WANT ICS!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michelle-Matthews/100000395111459 Michelle Matthews

What a joke! The Atrix 4G is STILL in the development stage and Jellybean is already out. I don’t see the original Atrix users getting ICS when it’s all said and done regardless of Motorola’s Q3 prediction.

  • jay

Why leave out the Droid x? Are those loyal android fans now being punished for not buying the iPhone?

  • sudhir

why do you don’t provide software updation when the devices are capable of getting updates…and many other brand’s like htc , sony and samsung are providing updates to there devices which are not even of your standard…please consider and provide updations to defy plus on-wards
