Motorola APPy Hour: kid-friendly edition

May 30, 2012 : BY Motorola

The minute you set your phone down, your kid picks it up. The tablet you bought as a “family” gift hasn’t left your tween’s room since January. Thanks to your toddler, your last Facebook status update was “a@&89l;’.”

Any of these sound familiar? From tots to tweens, kids love tech. They take after their parents, after all! The next time your mini me reaches for your smartphone or tablet, make sure it’s loaded with some apps designed just for kids.

Jungle Math for Kids

A visually stunning math exercise game that helps kids build basic math skills. Jungle Math transports your child to a tropical rain forest to learn addition and subtraction, building math, logic and reasoning skills.

Green Eggs and Ham

This app combines the original text and artwork of a Dr. Seuss classic, with professional narration and background audio. To promote reading in young children, individual words are highlighted as the story is read and words zoom up when pictures are touched.

Fling a Thing (Free)

A simple and fun game where you fling cute little characters into the air to collect bubbles. When you’ve cleared away all the bubbles, you move on to the next level. Keep going and you’ll meet some really bizarre objects!

A Moon For The Sky (Free)

Help the land of Astrolunia! Send a new moon into the sky, to restore the ecosystem. But watch out—there will be obstacles in your way. Simple gameplay with progressive difficulty and many elements to unlock.

The Motorola Mobility Foundation encourages employees to get mobile in more ways than one. It’s well known that Motorola is all about mobility, but it’s not all tech. As part of the Get Mobile program, employees who participate in an organized walk, run or other “a-thon” that benefits charity can receive $300 towards their fundraising goals from our foundation. Employees have requested Get Mobile grants for everything from walk-a-thons, triathlons, marathons and even bird watching a-thons!

The most recent recipient was “Team Robin.” Thirteen Motorola Mobility employees participated in the Brain Tumor Walk in honor of their co-worker’s wife who lost her battle to brain cancer in 2011.

We hope you all get mobile and make a difference this year. Please tell us in the comments of events and programs you and your employers take part in.

Some Voice Actions open a panel where you’re prompted to complete the action, by speaking or typing.

MEMORIAL DAY 2012: REMEMBER

May 28, 2012 : BY Motorola

Semper Fi. Aim High. This We’ll Defend. To all the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces who have served in any war and given their lives, Motorola remembers. For more than 80 years, we’ve been there too — fighting right beside you. Our Handie-Talkie SCR536 portable two-way radio, developed in 1940 by Galvin Manufacturing Corp. (later Motorola) engineers, was a World War II icon. In 1943, we designed the world’s first FM portable two-way radio, the SCR300 backpack model, for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Weighing 35 pounds (15.9 kg), this “walkie-talkie” radio had a range of 10 to 20 miles (16-32 km). Yes, Motorola remembers. And we salute you. Learn more about Motorola over the years.

It knows your mom’s digits by heart. And your favorite pizza toppings too. It’s heard every Oscar-worthy break-up, make-up and send-up. Yep, your phone’s been right there with you through thick and thin. Your one true companion. And confidant.

But guess what? It’s tired. Your trusty friend is not the sparkling, state-of-the-art, champion of wireless communication it used to be. And it’s just begging you to break in a younger, sleeker, sexier model. Believe it or not, you might currently be eligible for an upgrade. You can keep your existing number too. You owe it to your old phone, and friend, to find out. Take a look today.

At Motorola, we’ve always pushed the envelope, innovating forward-thinking products and services, like the first pay-TV system.

It was 1957 when the Telemovies services offered people living in Bartlesville, Oklahoma the ability to pay for movies not offered by the regular TV channels and watch them in the comfort of their homes. We designed and provided the equipment that made it possible.  The first subscriber not only got to be the first person to watch their chosen movie at home, they also won a Motorola TV.

In 1960, the Motorola Astronaut television was the world’s first transistorized, cordless portable, large-screen television (at 19 inches!).

Then in 1966, there was the Motorola experimental shirt-pocket television, featuring a 1-1/8 inch picture. This advanced engineering project was directed by DeLoss Tanner of Motorola’s consumer products engineering department.

We’ve got a thing for being revolutionary, and you can click here to see all the latest ways we’re working to better your TV experience inside and outside of the home.

What cool things have you thought of that you’d like to see in the future? Tell us about them in the comments.
