Wondering about software updates for your device?

May 18, 2012 : BY Motorola

You’re not alone. Good thing we’ve got a page for that. You can get the latest software upgrade news on our refreshed page.

You may be wondering why all devices aren’t being upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Here’s the deal. We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done—well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.

Happy upgrading!

  • Anonymous

WOW. Remember this “commitment” with Google that was announced at last year’s I/O Conference? The one where OEMs (including yourselves) committed to keeping phones updated for 18 months post-release? No?

Well, let me remind you: http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/google-partners-with-oems-and-carriers-to-guarantee-android-upda/

You guys are terrible. What a bullcrap marketing ploy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Denny-Craneftw/100000896630404 Denny Craneftw

Keeping a phone updated and updating to a new operating system are not the same thing. The Droid X, released July, 2010, received a large update recently. Was it ICS? No. Of course not. But it fixed a lot of issues and made a lot of improvements. This is keeping a phone updated.

When you buy a computer, you receive regular updates. You’re not given a new operating system. Be thankful that the mobile industry does that for free on the newer phones.

      • Anonymous

Really? What a fun analogy this will be to tear apart!

You see, with a PC people are allowed to use whatever OS they want, instead of it being dictated to them by the computer manufacturer. Sure, you have to pay for each OS upgrade if you run Windows, but at least THE OPTION IS THERE!

And if you’re smart enough to use Linux? Yeah, you get updates to the latest version as soon as it’s released… for free.

And the final nail in the coffin? Android is FREE!!! Motorola CAN NOT CHARGE USERS FOR UPGRADES, as this would violate the GPL. I can promise you that if they could charge, they would be pushing the latest version out days after it was announced. This business model of trading short term gains for long term losses is what has dragged so many once great comanies down, and I can’t wait for it to happen to Moto.

That’s not the intent of the partnership.

Just know my droid 3 will be my first and last motorola phone that I will use in my life!

    • Anonymous

/sigh. I have a Droid 3. It’s a great phone. It was also obviously not going to be upgraded to ICS. I’ve known this. Doesn’t change it being a great phone. Quit your whining.

  • Mark Fischer

I am done with motorola. 8 month old phone that can run ICS and Motorola/Verizion refused to update it. What about the “promised” unlock for boot loader? This now is more important for end users to update to ICS with other roms.

  • Slandy7

My Droid 3 isn’t even a year old, and Motorola has decided not to upgrade it. Phones with slower processors, less RAM, and manufacturers with fewer resources have been upgraded to ICS. This is an infuriating call by Motorola, as it was made with one factor in mind: money. This will be the last Motorola phone I ever buy, and I will certainly not recommend Motorola phones to anybody else.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Denny-Craneftw/100000896630404 Denny Craneftw

Oh, I’m sorry, I remember the Droid 3 release… but I do NOT remember a promised upgrade path to ICS. Please cite where Motorola gave that promise.

      • http://www.facebook.com/james.erath James Neil Erath

Where did he say Motorola promised an update? Oh, nowhere. He is right, however. Sony is upgrading their lesser models up to ICS. Only one of their phones released over the past year won’t make it, and that’s because the Playstation software that makes the Xperia PLAY unique makes ICS extremely unstable. That’s a valid reason to not upgrade an OS. Trying to force users to buy a new phone is not.

  • littlenoodles

This is amazingly shortsighted – on the part of both Motorola and Google. ICS is being held back by the sheer numbers of Gingerbread devices in the field. Because ICS-targeted apps can’t run on Gingerbread, Android devices live in a Gingerbread-only world as far as apps go. That limits the advantages of ICS, and it’s chicken or egg all the way.

If current Gingerbread hardware is incapable of running ICS, then Google needs to put out a Gingerbread update that includes ICS app compatibility – with appropriate downgrades of unimplemented functionality. Otherwise, ICS apps won’t take off for years. The Kindle and Nook will remain Gingerbread devices, and Android tablets will suffer for it.

As far as Motorola is concerned, the lack of ICS apps makes ICS phones less appealing. And the sheer number of Gingerbread phones is driving the lack of ICS apps. More chicken and egg.

This is a big problem for all open source platforms. Release early, release often is a great mantra for betas, but it has serious limitations. A better approach for widely-used platforms is release ‘complete enough’, and live with the consequences. Like it or not, Microsoft has succeeded largely because their API’s have been more or less frozen for a decade. You target WIN32, and you can run most apps on desktops as old as Win95. That’s a good thing. Unix/POSIX has lots of crappy API’s, but they’re good enough, and you don’t see incompatible ‘upgrades’ to the API’s there. Why don’t desktop platform dev’s get that?

Google are going to have a seriously difficult time trying to rebuild any trust in the Motorola brand.

  • Anonymous

My Motorola Xoom MZ601 will be my last Motorola device. The device is still in the “evaluation & planning” phase even though similar devices (e.g. the US version of the Xoom or the WIFI only version) either have ICS or will get ICS. I expect this to mean that my device will not get ICS or will get it so far out in the future that it will not matter.

Motorola is a company not worthy of trust. You stood on the stage with Google and showed us the Xoom as the Android 3.0 launch device. Never did you tell us that non-US customers where second rate customers not worthy of support. You joined the Android Update Alliance telling us about timely updates. It appears that that was just words.

Shame on you. You are a company not worthy of trust. You will never see my money again.

I have the same tablet and I agree with you about the software upgrade but I think the real deal breaker for that product it’s the screen. I never saw a worst motion blur in my life, not even on first generation lcd panels.

      • Anonymous

I actually like the hardware. Sure there are better screens and thinner devices. But when I’m actually using the device all of that doesn’t matter. Then all I care about is the software on the device.

Problem with Motorola and the Xoom is that they didn’t think the business case through when they created the device.

Mistate #1: Using the Xoom name for both the Google supported US devices and for the Motorola supported devices, even though they are in essence very different products.

Mistake #2: Not understanding that devices that shipped with Android 3.0 would need a significant number of firmware updates before customers were satisfied.

Mistake #3: Delivering the Xoom with more than 20 different firmware versions depending on the market. This is a nightmare for Motorola to support and makes decent customer support (when it comes to software updates) very expensive. Had they instead decided to go with one firmware version that could handle the Wifi only, the various 3G versions and the LTE version then this would have been so much simpler. Oh, and this is the way apple does it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Denny-Craneftw/100000896630404 Denny Craneftw

I find it interesting that these people now claiming Motorola is horrible, and will never buy another Motorola product… did no research before they spent large sums of money on new devices. If this companies practices are so terrible, none of you looked into this beforehand?

No, this is the “grass is always greener on the other side of the fence”. I bet you all loved your devices running under Gingerbread and only got whiny when you saw the kid next door getting ICS on some other brand.

      • Anonymous

I cannot speak for others but the Xoom was advertised as the launch device for Honeycomb with Google delivering updates. Only after buying the device did people outside the US discover that their devices would get updates from Motorola. So much for research.

And obviously gingerbread has nothing to do with this. This has all to do with Motorola launching a version 1 product (Honeycomb), without the willingness to support it in a timely manner. Keep in mind the the ICS issues are not the first problems non US customers face. The Android 3.1 and 3.2 updates was very late too. And there has been issues with Android 3.x all along.

So please do some research before writing wise-guy remarks like that.

  • Chad Tapp

I’ve got an Original Droid, the Droid X, A Droid 3, 2 Xooms. Love the hardware but lack of software after the fact and no way to unlock the bootloader so that the community can develop software when you guys refuse to develop is unacceptable. Guess I’m going to Samsung with my wife’s Galaxy Nexus. Thanks for making the decision easy. Hopefully with Google taking over you guys, the idiot who made this decision will be left unemployed.

  • http://profiles.google.com/9bryanlee Bryan Lee

If I determine that ICS cannot be delivered—well then, I’m not going to buy any motorola phone

  • http://twitter.com/giveen Jeremy Morales

If you aren’t going to upgrade it, at least unlock the bootloader, so us in the dev community can improve the devices ourselves. DROID X owner here.

  • http://twitter.com/pinecone73 Michael Yester

What Jeremy Morales said below. Not everyone has money to buy a new phone every 6 months so at least unlock the bootloader and let developers cook up their own magic. Let the end user determine if running ICS on a Droid 1 makes the phone run so slow that they should get a new phone or live with what makes their phone run the best.

  • Anonymous

Good old Motorola. Back in April 2010 I bought a Cliq XT (should have just bought a Nexus One) running 1.5. Was told it would be updated to 2.1 “soon”. ETAs kept getting pushed back until finally in Feb 2011 they said the device would not get an update. Meanwhile custom ROMs were being built for the phone running 2.1. I rooted the phone started flashing ROMs then eventually sold it because of the crappy hardware. The only up side is that thanks to Motorola, I got into rooting, custom ROMs, kernels, and all that other stuff.

If I remember correctly, Motorola said they would unlock bootloaders around the time HTC did. Looks like Moto dropped the ball on that one too. I’ve determined that Motorola is a company that can’t be trusted and has poor business practices–well then, I’ll never buy another Motorola product again.

I am very disappointed to see the Triumph won’t even get 2.3

  • Akashshr

No I dont get it, Why are you doing this moto..?
Its silly you folks aren’t listening to the people who actually buy your phones…Its going to be a serious problem for your guy, Sadly I love moto, and I dont think such software update delay is going to hold me back from Buying Motorola Products….But 85$ mil loss, just tells that you gotta listen to the consumers more often….

1# Unlock all bootloaders, not cause we want it like that..Cause thats what your promised, and thats that!

2# Stick to the 18 months old phone Update policy, that was discussed at Google I/O last year. The least you folks can do is stick to the promises you have made.

Actually that is all we all want from you guys for now..

  • Anonymous

It’s absolutely bizarre that the Xoom 2, your FLAGSHIP tablet, doesn’t yet have Ice Cream Sandwich when the predecessor has been running it for months now. I bought a Xoom 2 Media Edition back in February…. the logical thinking was that an ICS upgrade would come perhaps 2, maybe even 3 months later. It’s now over 3 months later and yet we’re still another few months away. By the time it gets an upgrade, the next version of Android will likely have been announced. Absolutely unacceptable. My cousin purchased an Asus tablet around the same time (Feb) and ICS was available straight away.

I don’t want to say I’ll never purchase a Motorola product again but I shouldn’t even be in a position where I have to think about it.

My advice? Push up the upgrades for your FLAGSHIP products to Q2. Hell, even late Q2 would be acceptable. Q3 is not.

From the post you linked… Camera not working. MMS rarely works. Graphics memory runs out. Data usage doesn’t work… and reading further into the thread, lots of other bugs, too. Simply installing ICS onto a device is pretty easy. Getting everything to work… and work well… takes effort and time. If this is your best argument, you’ve proven a good point. As to WHY ICS is not being released to different devices.

  • Kerry Coleman

News at 10: Motorola making up bullshit excuses to avoid updating devices
News at 11: most of the devices Motorola is making excuses not to update to ICS area already running ICS and doing it FASTER then GB, making Motorola’s excuses invalid
News at 12: majority of developers happy do to Motorola’s work for them, requesting the promised bootloader unlock, yet again
News at fuckall: Motorola making more excuses to drop more devices (even those already “planned” to get the update) from the ICS update list, and even more excuses to not release the bootloader unlocks for devices

See a pattern? No, Ill point it out for you, devices sell, carriers request EOL for devices to avoid selling lower priced phones, and Motorola saves and probably gets paid for not using man hours for development…

Precisely why I avoided, and will continue to avoid Motorola products!

Two phones not even a year old are being hung out to dry? My dx2 and wife’s d3 are more than capable to run ics but it looks like moto doesn’t care. with no reason either. And is anything being done for those of us with these new but immediately outdated devices? No! Not even unlocked bootloaders so custom roms arent even an option. I have two that I am now screwed on. It is sad when less than six months into a device’s life, the manufacturer makes them obsolete… And wont even let us help ourselves by locking us out of our own devices… Owned 4 moto devices. htc and samsung are looking better every day.

I have ics on my droid 3 and it is night and day vs gingerbread. They are just upset about not being able to have blur and the verizon bloatware that comes with it, so in turn we get punished for it. Looks like its HTC for me until Google gets Motorola back on track.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Denny-Craneftw/100000896630404 Denny Craneftw

It amazes me that SO many people apparently bought phones that they hated. They bought phones running Gingerbread and did what… set it on a table and glared at it until it magically updated to Ice Cream Sandwich?

Personally, I buy phones because I like them NOW. I appreciated the updates I have received so far for my Droid Razr, and IF it updates to ICS, I’ll be pleased. But the fact is, I like my phone now. I would not have bought a phone on vague hopes that it would update later to something I like.

I think you are missing something here. The other company, the guys from Infinite Loop, changed the game. They showed that you can buy a device today and still expect you product to gain features and fixes over time. And somehow companies like HTC and ASUS have learned that game too (although not as well as Apple).

News at 2: Motorola makes announcement that some devices approved for ics update have been dropped, finds more excuses to delay/deny release of bootloader unlock for any phone

Anyone else see a pattern here? If not, ill go ahead and point it out, Motorola has been the WORST major company when it comes to Android and the OpenSource initiative it set out to accomplish, on top of that, excuse after excuse, phones released not even 6 months prior are left to sit and rot by the roadside.

I will note here that back when the Photon 4G came out, I REALLY wanted it for myself, I also wanted the Xoom for myself, was saving up cash, about 6 months later when I had the cash, I saw that Motorola had not released a bootloader unlock, for ANY of the devices at the time! Then, I wanted a Motorola Admiral for my mother, again, looked to see if any bootloader unlocks had occurred, and decided against it, glad I did now since its not getting ICS!

I hope that Google kicks whoever is blocking bootloader unlocks and kernel source release’s and general CLOSED ANDROID, to the curb…

So, 4 months since US release of ICS on Xoom we’re still waiting in UK. Unless things start changing soon, I see very little reason to purchase Motorola tech again in the future. I know words mean nothing to your company as you have little concern for the customer so I will vote with my pocket.

  • http://www.facebook.com/james.erath James Neil Erath

That is crap and you know it. People have been loading Android 4.0 onto their Droid 3′s for months. They even say that the buggy camera issues are FIXED by rooting and upgrading. I’ve also seen firsthand how much more responsive the phone is with ICS. Well gee, that sounds like an IMPROVEMENT. And if you feel that you shouldn’t update because people will lose their Blur UI, then make it optional. And if you feel that the hardware won’t support it, I will then point you towards Sony, who is updating the Xperia Arc to ICS. The Arc, which has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, a 8.1Mp camera, and… What’s this? 512Mb of RAM? That’s crazy, you guys said ICS won’t run on 512Mb of RAM. Motorola, you are a group of lazy, irresponsible, and incompetent fools, and if I had known that post-launch support was going to be non-existent, I would have never bought any Motorola phone. You’ve screwed up, and nothing you can say will make up for not updating a phone 10 months old and fully capable of using the new OS. I was going to upgrade my Droid 3 to whatever the current phone would be when my contract would run out. I was even planning on buying a XYBoard. No longer. You’ve lost yourself many customers on this day, and I am one of them.

    Obrigado Motorola

    Adeus Motorola.

    ———————————————————————————————————————————————

    Thank Motorola

Because the detailed explanation of the Milestone 3 not receive upgrade to Android, I got the following conclusion.

The milestone is not and never will be a cell phone capable of overthrowing the Galaxy IBS because it has enough hardware to receive an update (since both have the same price).

Given the above fact this will be my last motorola since the products do not have a period of useful life of at least two years.

Ahh, and not worth the “Denny Craneftw” or “James Neil Erath,” try to explain because it has already done the damage.

Just do not understand why GOOGLE bought Motorola, Samsung should have bought, because they would always supremacy in handset sales for the loyalty of its consumers.

    Goodbye Motorola.

For my part, my present phone set is my first Motorola unit. I wasn’t looking for the snazziest touch-screen smart-phone; I wanted a “rugged” unit compatible with my choice of service provider, that would allow me rudimentary use of the WWWeb &c. Still, I look at the present state of things and don’t feel as if Motorola seeks a positive, long-term relationship with its customers.

Whatever else one makes of things, the refusal to upgrade Android on these various devices is letting slip an opportunity to get an awful lot of consumer good-will for a relatively small price.

The situation is still largely recoverable, simply by announcing upgrades and then following-through.

I have an XT925, will this device be getting 4.1 before 2013?

“Happy upgrading!” Pshhh. Little consolation for D3 owners like me. Looks like Motorola has a significant number of dissatisfied customers. That’s a fine piece of business. The only other American alternative is Apple and I don’t want their proprietary everything. No wonder this country is in economic trouble.

I’m an unhappy electrify owner. I wouldn’t have purchased it if I had known there wasn’t going to be an upgrade to ICS.

Motorola stop “upgrading” your software. This is the second time my Droid Bionic automatically “upgraded” & now I can’t access my gallery nor have a ringtone. The first time I went to Verizon & they said it didn’t download properly & they would send me a new phone with the software already “properly” installed. Well, they sent me a refurbished phone & was not “upgraded” so a month later the new phone automatically “upgraded” & the same issues as before. Please stop changing things, if it’s not broke, don’t fix it! You’re only making things worse & pissing people off!

Oh i’m happy that i buyed the Samsung Galaxy S3 and not the Razr HD or Razr i. On the future you will see these phones without update. Unfortunate.

I love my Xoom tablet but this latest upgrade to 4.1.2 Jellybean has trashed it. What happened to flash support? I regularly visit certain websites that are flash powered and I can no longer watch my videos. I have been told that “other sources” for flash are available but they do not work with my websites. Can I go back to the previous release somehow and get my flash restored?

BS you couldn’t update the Photon 4G, you would rather just keep pumping money and time into other phones rather than take care of your loyal early adopters.

Droid x2 Many Motorola phones in my past; however, I love my iPhone. Thank you for being a crappy company.
