UPDATE: Android 4.0 ICS News for DROID RAZR and DROID RAZR MAXX Owners

June 22, 2012 : BY Motorola

A select number of DROID RAZR by Motorola and DROID RAZR MAXX by Motorola owners will start receiving the upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich this week as part of our standard upgrade process; broader deployments will come over the coming days. While you wait, watch this short video highlighting some of the best new features that come with the new software.  You can also check out our “prepare and learn” pages so that you’ll be totally up to speed on all the latest features your smartphone is getting. There are plenty of videos explaining some of the coolest changes — which are all coming your way very soon.

By the way, the upgrade brings more than just Ice Cream Sandwich – it makes your DROID RAZR or DROID RAZR MAXX global ready!  They’re the first 4G LTE smartphones on the Verizon Wireless network that will be able to support voice and data service in more than 220 countries when you’re subscribed to an international plan.

    what about the Photon?

Is this going to prevent my phone from warning up when I’m surfing the web..?

Depending on how hot its actually getting, this behavior is normal, and occurs based on the radios/cpu usage and battery drain in addition to the heat generated by the screen. Its more noticeable on the Razr than many other handsets due to the materials used and the thin profile, meaning your hand is closer to the sources of heat, and the casing has less mass to absorb and dissipate that heat.
That said, if your handset routinely gets uncomfortably hot to touch, contact your service provider or Motorola Customer Support, as your handset may be defective in some way, or you may have a program that is malfunctioning and causing excessive cpu/radio usage.

lol, update a year after the release 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

    • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

Try 4 weeks after the Verizon Galaxy Nexus got this version of ICS officially, and its the first non-Nexus on Verizon with any build of ICS…but you do get credit for the effort.

      • Anonymous

I have it on my Bionic. A leaked build however. I love it.

  • Bumbexo

    Does this include XT 910?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000484085147 Brandon Ashwood

and how long will it take to rollout to everyone in the U.S.? im in the midwest and i dont wanna wait any longer than i have to since i bought this phone (box says upgradeable to ICS) for this very reason…ICE CREAM SANDWHICH!!!

    • http://twitter.com/Belatukadro Justtyn Hutcheson

Most of the time, soak test will run for Motorola Feedback Network candidates for 2-3 days to ensure that no serious issues are seen by a large test group (~1-2k, iirc). Then, the update will be rolled out to blocks of handsets over the next few days/weeks to reduce the load on the update servers.

Or just post a link for us to download as an executable file to update android headset via USB. Simple.

  • Esteban

I checked out the Photon information about the ICS release, but it applies to a Photon in Costa Rica?

  • Bobrdwn69

I am ready for it now. Like right now.

  • Olonajoseph

Just be happy it coming…No matter how long it took..

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610515962 Jack Burch

Figures – why even announce this when probably less than 2k will get the “soak test” – and most customers won’t receive ICS until early July. Moto-Fail………

  • Abie Moreno

    did anyone get the update

  • Anonymous

Only what like 5-7% of android devices are running ICS? It’s not like everyone has it but us. Also GB is stable and runs great. I’m glad ICS is coming but It;s not like the razr isnt a solid, well made phone right out of the box.

  • http://twitter.com/igabrieu Ionita Gabriel ♍

What about 3G native video call? Is possible in ICS on RAZR MAXX?

  • http://twitter.com/MagicXB Nick

Where is the ICS update for my Atrix 2? :( I realize you have it listed on your update schedule for Q3, but I hope to god I don’t have to wait until the end of September for it to hit…

When can I start pulling the update manually? And the forums still says development stages..

Still nothing its been 5days now..
I understand that patience is required for these “roll outs” as they call em, however on the other side of the coin those “i”phone owners can upgrade their phones as soon as the update is released. the only waiting involved is waiting while downloading the update.
Moto promised ICS 6 weeks after the phone was released in November. not 6 months.
do you remember that speech Moto? and again at CES 2012 in January “6 weeks” we were informed well 6 months later still waiting……can you understand our frustrations Moto?
my Razr is the last Moto product I will ever buy.

    Sincerely still waiting….

  • Mahtuoggs

Yeah, still waiting in Asia Retail too, no updates as of now. Keep your promise Moto.

I’m tired of waiting give me a day and time I can “check for updates” and get it. I’ve had nothing but Motorolas for many years, give me a break…

  • Anonymous

Hi there, the ATRIX 2 ICS upgrade is in development and scheduled for rollout in Q3 2012 in Asia-Pacific, LATAM, USA, and selected other markets.

  • S Powers

I don’t mind waiting as long as their is open communication.Verizon and or Moto should keep the consumers updated (whomever is in charge of the actual rollout). There should be someone in charge somewhere that has the power to communicate to everyone. Maybe a media specialist in charge of transparent communication on specific deices so their are no rumors. The rumors are such a pain to read. This is just poor business behavior and standards on the part of 2 major corporations. It does not take an army to send out a message, it takes 1 person and 1 sight to feed the world the data.

How frustrating. I’m flying out to Thailand and Cambodia soon, and they dangle this in front of my face, but I have no promise I’ll get it before a leave next week. Horrible customer experience.

  • http://www.facebook.com/KelliLaFramboise Kelli LaFramboise

I’ve received the update on my phone and I am not pleased. Many of the apps that I already had on my phone will stop unexpectedly. I have uninstalled and then reinstalled these apps and still have the same problems. My phone freezes more often and is just slower in general. Additionally, the MotoCast feature is now worthless. I can’t access any of the music or files on my home computer. I also dislike the fact that the Task Manager has been removed—this is my biggest complaint about the update. It was a great way to keep battery-life-sucking-apps from running continuously in the background. If Motorola and Android can’t push a better update then I’ll be converting to an IPhone when I’m eligible for an upgrade. This is really disappointing considering how much I enjoyed my RAZR when I first purchased it. Sad, sad, sad.

    • Anonymous

Hi Kelli — Sorry to hear you’re not liking the update. Are all your apps updated? With the music app, you can still sign in with MotoCast and sync your songs from your computer. To stop apps from syncing, try going into settings > accounts & sync > and select the accounts. Another option is to set up SMARTACTIONS. Hopefully with these tips will help. If you need anything else, please feel free to email us, socialmedia@motorola.com.

  • http://www.facebook.com/johan.steyn.507 Johan Steyn

Hi there. I am glad to see response from insidemotorola. I have a Razr XT910 and love it. I have had a Q9H a while back and that was also a great phone – I live in South Africa. I suppose the whole fight with Apple is taking Google’s focus away from Motorola’s efficiency. Also Motorola is undergoing heavy downsizing. I am just worried that your service level to your faithful customers is going down quite badly.

My Device Software Update (PC software) keeps on saying (98% of the time) that there is no internet connection. Since it sometimes work I know this is not PC related. This happens on another computer as well. Even my Phone update very often gives the error that the update service is unavailable. Will you please fix this?

Please let us know when the update is coming (even a rough estimate would be OK). I am tired of checking everyday. The disappointment is growing. I do hope we are getting the bug fixed version since I do know that the earlier releases of ICS did have serious bugs. I am a patient guy but I do understand the other people’s frustration with Motorola. Being late is one thing, but not responding to frustration enflames the situation. PLEASE COMMUNICATE with us! Saying that SA will get ICS in Q3 does not cut it. That could be the last day of September. But even if that was true and you had a good enough reason for it and told us about it, we might just warm up to you. Many (me as included) bought the Motorola with the Google buyout as some motivation. I did not realize that it would have a detrimental effect, I might have been a bit naive. I believe the real problem at Motorola is the Buyout as well as the fight with Apple. Is Apple actually accomplishing what they intended? Please do not let that company win you in this way. May you have success! But typing a few words to us will not cost you so much resources.

Well, surprise us, maybe even with Jelly bean – we can dream, not so?

Still no update for Bionic users. After my 3 months are up with this crap Motorola phone I will be switching to Samsung . At least they don’t lie to their customers. Also will be telling this to all my friends and many forums I am affiliated with.

I just got the update but the screen heats up way too much, battery goes dead after 2 hour usage and some apps closes or freezes the device…where should I look for some help?

“replace your sim card, that’s the fix.”

  • Drake

I bought Motorola RAZR from USA but now im in Afghanistan when my phone update it to ICS ?

  • Anonymous

Sorry to read you’re experiencing all this issues. Have you tried powering your device? Sometimes it needs a refresh.

  • Anonymous

Voluntarily upgraded droid 4 to ICS, assuming that every upgrade is “overall better”. Deeply regret it. Phone is VERY SLOW and freezes 3x a day (while eating up the battery i.e. overheating), especially on Facebook and gmail. Had to install an app that allows G3 instead of G4. Totally unreliable and unenjoyable product now.

I from Santiago de chile and upgrade my mobile phone to motorola razr. This it has android 2.3.6. We are octuber 15th and I couldn`t find officially the update for my motorola to ICS. Can somebody help me please? When will I have ICS to my motorola razr?

  • Praphul kumar

I bought the RAZR XT910 just a week ago and upadated it to ICS4.0.4. Since then I
have been repenting. The phone has become really slow and autorestarts
every now and then. I always have to force restart in this case coz it
is not able to boot automatically.

    Battery backup has been
screwed up. Homescreen eats away 60% of the battery and phone becomes
unresponsive quite often. I want a solution or a rollback to GB please.
    Someone help.

Please email your MEID# and this information to supportforums@motorola.com Attention Matt Thanks

    • Brad McLoon

Same issue, phone gets hot, screen constantly freezes requires hard reboot.

System cpu usage is always over 30%

I have rebooted into bp hw diag mode and it stops the freezing heating and reduces cpu usage by system to between 4 and 11%

      Whats going on

Oh i have done several factory data resets and wiped cache

  • http://www.facebook.com/deanna.earsing Deanna Earsing

I absolutely agree!!! I have the droid bionic and never had an issue with my phone before the upgrade, I loved it! I was so excited to get ICS and since I finally got it a few months ago(even though we should have got it in January) I’ve had nothing but problems! Had to reset my phone, lost of bunch of stuff in the process, very slow/apps freeze/etc, then the phone started getting abnormally hot and I now turn it off before it starts on fire(hypothetically speaking of course). This is absolutely ridiculous for what we spend not only on these phones but on our plans as well. What a rip off! I too may join apple as well.
