Software & Apps

On Monday, we polled our Facebook fans and posed this scenario:

You’re stranded in the middle of the desert. What’s the one app you couldn’t live without? And no… there’s no “Rescue Me From This Desert” app.

46% said they couldn’t live without Maps/GPS if stranded in a desert, which came as no surprise.

Fortunately Google maps, both with an internet connection, or without if you planned ahead, has you covered.

On your DROID RAZR M BY MOTOROLA or other compatible Motorola phone, offline maps lets you save and use certain maps when you’re not connected to the Internet. With GPS on, the blue dot will still work without a data connection so you know where you are. Whether you’re traveling the world or underground, offline maps can help you navigate the offline world.

14% said that they couldn’t live without Social Media or their favorite browser.

The Google Play store has all your favorite social media apps available including the latest version of the Youtube app.

And for fast mobile browsing, the Google Chrome app will get you to where you want to go on the web, even without a camel.

6% said that they couldn’t live without music.

Google Play Music has you covered, streaming all of your music to your device. You can even add 20,000 of your own songs to the cloud for free, so you’ll be sure to have enough music until your rescue team arrives.

Most of the other suggestions were for apps that don’t exist yet, like 9% that wanted an app to make beer or water, so as soon as the developers get that figured out, we’ll be sure to report back.

Field Trip is your guide to the cool, hidden, and unique things in the world around you. It runs in the background on your phone and when you get close to something interesting, a card pops up with locational details. No click required. If you have a headset or bluetooth connected, it will read the info to you.

With some of the built-in partners, such as BLUEPRINT Chicago for Architecture, Zagat’s for food and drink, Yesterland and Arcadia Publishing for historical places and events, and Google Offers for deals you’ll find plenty to see, do and buy.

Re-Discovering Wicker Park, Chicago
We headed out with a DROID RAZR M to check out eclectic and artsy Wicker Park. Like all places in this city, there’s history all around. This app peels back the layers of time to reveal the realities of the past. Today’s Hoyne Street was once called Beer Baron Row and was one of the first streets in Chicago to be paved after the great Chicago fire in 1871. And those ornate stone mansions still standing on Hoyne are the result of those wealthy beer merchants profits. We also got to peer into the future as we stumbled upon the Bloomingdale trail, an upcoming elevated 2.7 mile linear park that will be situated on a defunct rail line.

This app is all about the art of the wander. Streets you’ve walked down before, or never knew existed, become alive in new ways. A tone and vibration alerts you when crossing another marker.  . Stop, look, listen and above all enjoy your journey.

How To

Smartphones just keep getting smarter. The latest jaw-dropper being added to Android phones is a thing called Near Field Communication. NFC for short.

Here’s a simple definition: NFC allows you to share information on your phone with a simple tap.

Here’s an example: Let’s say you have a DROID RAZR M by MOTOROLA, which has NFC technology built in. And you’re out with a friend who has a MOTOROLA PHOTON Q™, also NFC-equipped. You just took a video of your friend dancing on a table with a stranger. Your friend really wants a copy. In the past you’d have to send that clip to her via text or email. But with NFC you just tap your phones together, confirm that “yes” you want to share it, and voila! That video file is wirelessly transferred to your friend’s phone to keep forever and proudly show her grandchildren.

With NFC you can share all sorts of things this way – contact information, web pages, maps, directions, and more. Read more about NFC.

Watch NFC in action on the DROID RAZR M by MOTOROLA.
