Android™ 4.1 Jelly Bean and the future of Motorola software

November 9, 2012 : BY Punit Soni

UPDATE: Check out our new upgrade page featuring the latest news on Android software upgrades around the world at moto.ly/upgrade

At the new Motorola, we’re focused on making fewer, bigger bets that will redefine the mobile experience for our users.  And one of our top priorities is delivering great software upgrades. To that end, we’d like to share with you our latest developments:

DROID RAZR M BY MOTOROLA gets Android 4.1™ Jelly Bean

We’re excited to announce that DROID RAZR M is getting upgraded to Android™ 4.1 Jelly Bean. Starting today, the upgrade will be rolled out to users in phases. Jelly Bean includes a number of fantastic new and improved features, including Google Now, Voice Search, and improved notifications. Check out Motorola.com/jellybean to learn more.

Looking ahead: software upgrades will be available for preview

We know it’s important for many of you to get the latest Android software upgrades onto your phones as quickly as possible. With that in mind, we’re also introducing Test Drive, a new program that will allow consumers to take our major software upgrades for a trial run and provide valuable feedback before we launch the upgrade publicly.  Starting with Android 4.2, the next iteration of Jelly Bean, we will release a preview of our software to a few hundred consumers that sign up for Test Drive.  More details on how to sign-up and participate will be announced on the blog soon.

Going forward, we are going to focus our efforts so that we can deliver consistently high quality experiences to our users.  Unfortunately that means not all phones will be getting upgrades.  If you own a device that’s not getting upgraded, we’ve created the Motorola trade up program.  The trade up program gives you $100 back on a new Motorola smartphone when you trade-in your old one–so you don’t have to miss out on Jelly Bean.  For qualifying devices and more details, check out Motorola.com/tradeup.

Clearly, there’s a lot going on at Motorola, and we have no intention of slowing down any time soon. DROID RAZR M is only the first of many devices to get Jelly Bean (the full schedule is here).   We’re a new company with a new approach, and a big part of how we’ll do business going forward is to keep our customers in the loop.  You can always reach out to us on Google+ as well as our other social media channels with questions or feedback.

  • Scott Schopman

Sooo when is papa bear going to let you make a Nexus??

    • John Darby

lol Never! Moto has no idea how to unlock their own bootloades. To make a Nexus device, that’s the first thing you need roflol #motofail

Bootloader from new razr are unlocked

  • Michael Portuesi

Can you tell us why RAZR and RAZR Maxx owners are getting 4.1 Jelly Bean rather than 4.2 Jelly Bean?

    • http://them3blog.wordpress.com/ Abel

Because 4.2 Jelly bean has been announced, not released. Moto can only update to the latest released version of android

      • Michael Portuesi

Android 4.2 is only weeks away from appearing in AOSP if past history is any indication, and Moto’s own timetable doesn’t commit to a deadline for a Jelly Bean upgrade on RAZR/Maxx. I don’t find that explanation very convincing.

        • http://them3blog.wordpress.com/ Abel

I think you don’t get it , Motorola has been working on 4.1 for some time now while they don’t have the code for 4.2 (at least most of it) now they can just worry about finishing the 4.1 rollout schedule on time or delaying it and adding 4.2, now the fact that you have a 4.1 release date won’t make your device less 4.2 compatible. Just let things go with the flow and ask 4.2 questions father the OS gets released, my nexus is waiting patiently for release and I know it might take a few weeks before I see it, so your device might take more time. Also blame Verizon, as they insist in adding their bloat witch delays update process, moto can’t talk about anything on this updates without going through Verizon first

          • http://www.facebook.com/wanderingg.bearr Wandering Bear

As I said, it’s not post-release now and Moto is refusing to upgrade new phones from this part of the world that are exactly the same as phones in ‘favored’ areas that are getting the upgrade.

      • http://www.facebook.com/wanderingg.bearr Wandering Bear

This is not the case. Moto is picking and choosing which areas will get the upgrades. Some areas will never get 4.2 (according to Moto). I know as I’m in one of those areas.

They recently closed their Hong Kong store that was supplying a lot of the new RAZRS in this part of the world and then announced that since their store does not exist they are not bound to honour service contracts or upgrade promisses.

Way to go on the customer commitment. Moto must be the absolute worst manufacturer as far as software and support. It’s been constant nightmares since I bought my RAZR Maxx.

i love moto phones but i dont want moto blur give me a way to remove it and i would be a moto customer for life

    • http://twitter.com/asten77 Asten

Have you even played with a Motorola phone in the last 6 months? There is no blur. There’s a few added features, but the UI is android.

      • http://profiles.google.com/twaffle Thomas Charron

Really? I’m pretty sure I’ve been using a Moto phone for a year now, and I still see blur. As a matter of fact, my ability to load it without blur was ripped out of my phone forcefully, without any notice.

  • Daniel Dlugos

As a Bionic owner for over a year now, I hope you understand that your words don’t mean a whole lot to me.

    • Anonymous

With Motorola dropping the Webtop (which I really like about the Bionic), and in light of all the other issues with CDMA and LTE in the USA (including an unlockable bootloader so I can add features back onto my phone!) I am ready to be done with Motorola and the Droid line.

    • Tomin Bristol

As another Bionic owner since launch day, I’ve been updated to .902, .905 and now to .246 ICS. I think Punit would understand that his words in the 2 months he’s been aboard mean a great deal to me.

  • Scott DePetro

Test drive! I love it when you listen..

  • http://them3blog.wordpress.com/ Abel

I want to join!!!! Also a few international friends I have use Motorola. Is this you g to be US only or you plan on adding as many people as possible?

  • Ken Bauer

I bought an Atrix(MB860) based on the published (here on Motorola’s site) news that it would receive Ice Cream Sandwich. Now that they pulled the plug on that I will no longer trust Motorola with my electronics purchases.

  • Raul Espejo

“And one of our top priorities is delivering great software upgrades”
Atrix, Photon and Electrify users disagree
the “new” moto shouldn’t care only on their “new” phones

  • Michael Bailey

Thank you Motorola. Sir, you have just made my day. Test drive sounds fantabulous!!

  • Sandcrab3

Is this ‘Test Drive’ replacing the Motorola Feedback Network? I don’t see the difference.
And I LOVE my Razr MAAX. Best quality phones I’ve ever owned were from Motorola.

It’s nice to see that Motorola is moving forward with consumer friendly policies. It’s unfortunate for people that bought devices released by “Old Motorola” which won’t see the benefits of the new management, but hopefully you’ll be able to win everyone back with this new movement.

    • http://profiles.google.com/twaffle Thomas Charron

This new management is the very people who locked our bootloaders, and canceled support for our phones. And have since ignored us, their existing users. This isn’t a new motorola, this is one who is simply trying to get new phone sales under the guise of being a good company who cares.

    • Lee David Cuellar Sanz

    • Renan

This is my question as well

  • http://about.me/markedwards MarkEdwards

This is a complete CROCK. I’m stuck with an outdated and potentially vulnerable to threats Photon 4G that I was told would be upgraded and now the “new Motorola” won’t stand behind it’s promise to me and thousands of other people stuck on Gingerbread for the term of our carrier contracts, in my case until AUGUST of 2013. Your trade in program is a weak attempt at trying to appease the people you lied to and I’d rather have my eyes clawed out by wild dogs than buy another Motorola product. Your company used to stand for something. Now you are greedy, lying fraudsters who need to think of a better way to make your lack of updates right and satisfy your customers. Replies like this don’t make you any friends or gain you sales.
    —————————————
Motorola Mobility continues to review how each device can deliver the very best experience possible, and at times, this can mean making tough choices – especially as it relates to Android software upgrades. Today, we need to let you know about some tough choices related to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades. Specifically, ATRIX 4G, Photon 4G and Electrify will not receive the ICS upgrade, but continue to be supported with maintenance releases to ensure optimum performance for the consumer.

We are committed to being more transparent than ever on our software upgrade strategy – even when we’re delivering news consumers may not want to hear. We are doing everything possible to continually improve our communication with you and make sure you are a satisfied customer. That’s why we recently announced our $100 rebate program for owners of these and other devices launched in 2011 and beyond that won’t get Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. This program starts in the U.S. this fall, and we are working to expand it to select regions around the world. Please watch for updates at motorola.com/tradeup.

@Anne A – one thing i dont understand is why in hell did u locked the bootloaders if u are not going to provide the software upgrades………………… this only means that u wont provide the upgrades and u also WONT LET the customers upgrade it themselves by other means.

I find it comical they give you 100 bucks to buy a new phone. WIll Never do business again with MOTO. EVER.

    BEWARE of Motorola

Kind of like the Soak test I took part in that encrypted my boot loader? Careful guys, they are a tricky bunch. Why you not answer us Punit.

Here is a post explaining what they do to customers who participate in things like ‘test drive’. They say that was the old Motorola but they still have not addressed the issue, will not even comment on it.

I think we should give Motorola a chance. Not criticize. In Canada, the hardware of other manufacturers are often neglected well beyond what your used to in the USA. New Motorola, new beginnings. Kudos to Motorola for beautiful new hardware. I’m a new RAZR HD owner in Canada and wish Motorola would offer this trial opportunity to us. But I have faith we will see updates soon. Bravo Motorola. Count me in for Test Drive for the Rogers Canada RAZR HD.

  • http://profiles.google.com/twaffle Thomas Charron

    Reposted from https://plus.google.com/108836852159521969167/posts/aHMBoxTUqEC

What is at issue here is, many, MANY people purchased the Photon,
Atrix, and Electrify phones a year ago due to the hardware capability
to ‘future proof’ their phones. For the majority of 2012, many users
where anxiously awaiting an update for their phones to Android 4.x.

To make matters worse, there where a significant number of
individuals who where invited to a soak test a few months back. I was
included in that smoke test. You see, the Photon originally shipped
with an OEM unlockable bootloader. Individuals such as myself had
already updated the system software which runs on the Photon.
Individuals who had updated their phones software in the past where
actively encouraged to take part in this soak test. There was a
specific statement in the invitation survey which stated “We
understand and support an individuals right and desire to use their
equipment as they wish, and would like individuals who have done so to
take part in this soak test”.

And then, we installed the software update. The change log provided
to us looked innocent enough. They can be found at
    https://forums.motorola.com/posts/9276b7fd57

They in no way, shape, or form, mentioned the bootloader
modification, which now proactively refuses to run anything beyond the
stock software. The invitation for the soak was specifically
targeting people, only to remove their ability to update their
software at all. Mark, the community manager, in no certain terms,
told us it wasn’t motorola’s problem, and there was no way to undue
what had been done. All of this, despite the specific request for
individuals who performed an OEM unlock of their bootloader. We where
quoted that the unlock was removed due to concerns of running custom
software, and they reserved the right to protect their etc…etc..

Many of us complained, but accepted that eventually we would be
updated to ICS, which was our end goal, so perhaps this wasn’t so bad.

It was then announced that the Photon Q would allow for OEM
unlocking of the bootloader. This was a direct contradiction to why
we where told that Motorola had forcibly locked our bootloaders. That
unlocked bootloader where dangerous, and thus could not be run. Well,
at least we will get ICS, many of us told ourselves, while grumbling..

And now we are here today. We purchased these flagship phones, and
where VERY proud of them. We where excited with the state of the art
Dual Core processors, with a gig of ram. We where disappointed when
our state of the art 4G phones lost any hope of 4G connectivity, as
WiMax was depricated out of existance, and replaced by LTE. But that
    wasn’t Motorola’s fault, really.

And we sit here less then one year later. Some software we cannot
install on our phones. The rest of the world moves forward, can
stream Hulu and Netflix. But not us. The users of 2011 Motorola
    phones.

If you don’t want to update phones software, please, at least let us
do it. It’s our hardware. Unlock the bootloader. Even better, take
the freely open modifications which end users are sharing, and use
this information to make your own releases better.

And most importantly, prove that you value customers who purchase
your products. You made the phones.. But they are ours. We use them
in our every day lives. People use your products. Don’t let your
customers believe that you don’t value them. Give them the power.

Moto has told me that they will never offer the upgrade to retail Hong Kong customers. The main Moto support people tell me that Moto Hong Kong has all the responsibility for the JB upgrade. Since the moved their store out of Hong Kong there will never be an upgrade. We have no choice but to buy another phone if we want the upgrade… hopefully not a Moto.

  • Anonymous

Booo to Motorola. You abandoned your customers after promising
upgrades. You advertised those upgrades to get us to buy. You joined
the handset alliance and promised 18 months of upgrades on your phones.
And now you renege on all those commitments and leave your customers
high and dry. You should be ashamed and nobody should trust you again.
    I never will.

    • http://www.facebook.com/wanderingg.bearr Wandering Bear

I’ll second that one. I’ll NEVER buy Moto again.

Translation “we don’t give a damn about honoring our promises to Atrix users. Buy a new Motorola product so we can shaft you again in the future.”

    • http://www.facebook.com/wanderingg.bearr Wandering Bear

They don’t give a damn about RAZR users either. At least not asia area RAZR users. They’ve basically told us we can just sit and spin since they have our money and are not giving it back.

The same happens in Spain and Italy in Europe…

  • Jared Persinger

I really love it how people come to the website just to say they aren’t buying another Motorola device, good for them I love Motorola phones

  • Harfner Joseph

I bought the Motorola Photon instead of the Galaxy S2 because I thought it was:
1- Google bought Moto so that would lead to first choice in Android Updates
2- It is a WORLD PHONE and a top notch phone for the time
3- MOTO promised to upgrade the phone for at least 18 months with the latest version of Android

Do not patronize me with your crappy $100 trade in offer. I will never buy a MOTO product again. Keep your god damn promise which lured me into buying your product. Hell if you don’t want to provide the update, unlocked the damn boot loader and I will get it my god damn self.

I am now a proud owner of a Samsung Galaxy S3 which came with ICS 4.0.4 and within two weeks I was updated OTA to Jelly Bean 4.1.1

It is sad that you will not provide Android upgrades to such a nice phone which is dual core and meets all the hardware requirement for ICS and JellyBean. Now my Photon is basically an expensive paper weight.

MOTO JUST SCEWED US WITH SANDPAPER AND CAN GIVE A RATS ASS ABOUT CUSTOMERS ONCE THEY GOT YOU COMMITTED. THEY WONT UPGRADE THE SOFTWARE TO FORCE US TO BUY THEIR NEW PHONES THE PHOTON Q and OTHER PHONES. HOW CAN ONE TRUST YOU AND REMAIN LOYAL AFTER THIS?????????????

I WISH GOOGLE TOOK OVER THE DAMN COMPANY PERHAPS THINGS WOULD BE DIFFERENT.

I have a new RAZR Maxx, and a suite of moto software that has all failed badly. Motocast just locks up on the desktop for 20 min at a time, then fails to sync. Smart actions is anything but… it fails to even do the simplest action properly. It can’t even handle switching WiFi on and off anymore. The PIM software on the phone seems to turn itself off periodically and needs manual restarting. (Not that it does anything anymore) The lack of functioning software makes my new phone only good as a phone… and that’s only if I carry around an old-fashioned paper phone list. Smart phone? Not at this point.

  • Luc Plouffe

Well, your JellyBean upgrade just killed the HDMI signal to the lapdocks and there’s no way to go back to ICS on my Atrix HD. So upgrading, got worst battery time, killed my lapdock, no more USB Mass Storage, a buggy browser and an unsatisfied customer. I never cared for the webtop software but my atrix HD was perfect for quick presentations to customers using the lapdock.

I was just about to purchase a Motorola Photon q lte today but I was told that it doesn’t have the jelly bean OS and that it may not get it at all. Is this true? For select countries and carriers in your region, the XT910 began ICS (Android 4.0.4) rollouts in Q3 2012 and for select countries and carriers it will be upgraded to Jelly Bean (Android 4.1). Have you tried to pull in your ICS update? If not try by going to:

settings > about phone > system updates
If the update is not available, you’ll have to check with your carrier to see if they support this upgrade. Thank you.

No “USB drag and drop” will be the end of Motorola. You don’t understand your own market.

  • Thats Bad

Now that i can no longer drag and drop files to the phone as a drive i am no longer interested in any Motorola smartphones. and i doubt you will let this be posted because it is pointing out such a huge flaw to your phones. i will be telling everyone i know not to by Motorola now.

Glad you care so much about your NEW phones. What about the Photon Users like me! Be glad im broke or I would get rid of this P.O.S. phone still running on Gingerbread and take my money elsewhere. You Promised us too and update in the future, after dicking us around for a year you finally decided you where NO LONGER updating our phones. Goodbye Motorola, Until you treat your long time customers fairly, Never again will I buy ANY Motorola device. I used to say you guys where a great company, now I tell everyone to avoid you like the PLAGUE…

Oh and locking my bootloader was nice too, Pricks…How about you unlock that, I can run a rom, I trust them more than motorola, your just a bunch of liars. Your feble attempt at apeasing me by giving me 100 bucks to buy a newer phone. Why would I want to do business with you anymore. How about you give me 600 bucks and I go buy a Galaxy S3 Hey atleast then I know I would get updated, from a company that CARES..

Why the same RAZR XT910 phone is not getting the JB update in many Asia countries but it is getting JB in US/Europe?

    • http://www.facebook.com/alejorosario Alejandro Rosario

Even not in all European countries. They don’t plan to upgrade to JB in Spain and Italy at least.

  • Chuck Norris

C’mon, hurry up with the Jelly Bean update for European RAZR XT910! Please!

  • blacksigler

I will be switching to an iphone ASAP!!! I HATE this upgrades! Second FORCED one in less than a year! And I don’t know who you have doing your review studies , but they are idiots. I can’t even begin to give the list of all the BAD things about this, we would be here forever. So, good job Motorola, you have lost a customer that has been with you for 10 years.

  • Slender

I have Droid Razr Maxx, with JellyBean 4.1.2. Each time I disconnect it from a computer, all of my ringtones are revert to the default. Yet when I charge it via the wall outlet nothing happens. My smartphone has not been rooted.
Does anyone know a solution to this problem?

My Droid 4 just updated to Jellybean yesterday. What a load of GARBAGE!!!!
Motorola just gave me a big slap in the face for being loyal. After the upgrade to Jellybean, my phone no longer picks up my wifi in my home. I was told by verizon wireless(who were very helpful), that my router is no longer recognized my jellybean. I would have to purchase a new router. So I called my DSL carrier, they will have to charge me between 8 and 12 dollars a month for a new router. Or I would have to go purchase a new router myself. Are you kidding me? So if I don’t choose to do either, my data usage will go up on my cell bill and I will still have to be out more money!!!! If I could I would give my Droid 4 back and go with another company. This is UNACCEPTABLE!!!!! Thanks for nothing Motorola!!!

What a piece of garbage. Wish I could go back and remove the update. Keyboard issues, no longer get 4G. My 4G phone that I bought is no a 3G phone. My hands free blue tooth no longer works. Living in NJ, you need hands free. You have to type in who you want to call, no more scroll down contacts. Turned my phone into a piece of junk.

  • Ahmed D.

When I receive call from someone I can’t hear them and also they can not hear me. I made big mistake that I update my Motorola xt910 to 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean)

  • mike

your updates are garbage. I have owned the Bionic, RAZR, RAZR MAXX, Droid 4 and now the RAZR M all through warranty exchanges due to issues cause by your ” great features” you FORCE on my device. Motorola blows. Your software is a joke at best, if you cared about your customer base and the quality of your products there would be a choice of updating or remaining on the original software revision. likewise there would be a choice for customers to update their phones themselves. so I ask you MOTOSHIT, where is my “slide to decline software updates” feature? until my suggestion hits your software
, you can suck my ass, I’m rolling with HTC.

The Jelly Bean OS has been in news for its amazing speed and simplicity. It is great that this upgrade will enhance the capabilities of Droid Razr. This opens a whole lot of things for users and increase its reliability.

How can I update my Motorola RAZR XT910 to latest OS?

  • Ray C.

The recent upgrade from ICS to Jelly Bean absolutely sucks,It Is an update that needs to be updated again to correct all the flaws. The update was in my opinion rushed to release long before it was ready. If there is a way to delete Jelly Bean and return to Ice Cream Sandwich I will be all over it.
I hope an update is released that allows me to return to ICS.Very bad decision my Google And Motorola.
