Field Trip: DROID RAZR HD at Niagara Falls

November 14, 2012 : BY Motorola

A few weeks ago we showed you what the Grand Canyon looks like through the camera of the DROID RAZR HD BY MOTOROLA. This time we headed out to Niagara Falls to see how another one of nature’s wonders was captured on the HDR setting of the RAZR HD. Taking high quality photos on the go has never been easier. Besides the HDR setting, you can also take panorama, multi-shot, slow-motion and also razor-sharp HD 1080p video, and much more.

The American Falls are 1060 feet long with a 176 foot drop and the Canadian Falls are 2600 feet wide and have a 167 foot drop with over 600,000 gallons churning per second according to the NIagara Falls Live site.

UPDATE: Check out our new upgrade page featuring the latest news on Android software upgrades around the world at moto.ly/upgrade

At the new Motorola, we’re focused on making fewer, bigger bets that will redefine the mobile experience for our users.  And one of our top priorities is delivering great software upgrades. To that end, we’d like to share with you our latest developments:

DROID RAZR M BY MOTOROLA gets Android 4.1™ Jelly Bean

We’re excited to announce that DROID RAZR M is getting upgraded to Android™ 4.1 Jelly Bean. Starting today, the upgrade will be rolled out to users in phases. Jelly Bean includes a number of fantastic new and improved features, including Google Now, Voice Search, and improved notifications. Check out Motorola.com/jellybean to learn more.

Looking ahead: software upgrades will be available for preview

We know it’s important for many of you to get the latest Android software upgrades onto your phones as quickly as possible. With that in mind, we’re also introducing Test Drive, a new program that will allow consumers to take our major software upgrades for a trial run and provide valuable feedback before we launch the upgrade publicly.  Starting with Android 4.2, the next iteration of Jelly Bean, we will release a preview of our software to a few hundred consumers that sign up for Test Drive.  More details on how to sign-up and participate will be announced on the blog soon.

Going forward, we are going to focus our efforts so that we can deliver consistently high quality experiences to our users.  Unfortunately that means not all phones will be getting upgrades.  If you own a device that’s not getting upgraded, we’ve created the Motorola trade up program.  The trade up program gives you $100 back on a new Motorola smartphone when you trade-in your old one–so you don’t have to miss out on Jelly Bean.  For qualifying devices and more details, check out Motorola.com/tradeup.

Clearly, there’s a lot going on at Motorola, and we have no intention of slowing down any time soon. DROID RAZR M is only the first of many devices to get Jelly Bean (the full schedule is here).   We’re a new company with a new approach, and a big part of how we’ll do business going forward is to keep our customers in the loop.  You can always reach out to us on Google+ as well as our other social media channels with questions or feedback.

Field Trip Indiana: Indiana Dunes State Park

November 8, 2012 : BY Motorola

Hiking shoes? Check. Rain gear? Check. Google Music outdoors playlist? Check. Maps for getting there? Check, with Google Maps on our phone to get us right to the beach with turn-by-turn directions.

We headed out with the DROID RAZR HD BY MOTOROLA and the MOTOROLA  S11-FLEX HD Stereo Bluetooth headset to tackle the Indiana Dunes State Park. Founded in 1925, the park spans 3 miles of beach along Lake Michigan’s southern shore and contains 2,182 acres in total. Part of the larger Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, which has 15,000 acres, the park boasts 45 miles of hiking trails of varying skill and endurance levels.

As we arrived near the beach, the Field Trip app alerted us in our S11 headset of historically significant sites, such as Le Petit Fort, where a battle was fought on December 5, 1780 between American forces under command of Lt. Thomas Brady and Jean Baptiste Hamelin and British forces under command of Dahreau de Quindre. Fortunately, the good guys won. Field Trip also pointed out an 1830s French Canadian homestead, and a working 1900s-era farm all within the lakeshore’s boundaries.

Ready to hike what our map said was the most rugged trail, it was time for the music to get us pumped. The HD stereo sound on the S11-FLEX HD was crystal clear with great range from high highs to a pumping bass line to get us revved up. Just under two miles long, trail number 8 takes us over the tops of the three highest dunes, providing nice lake views.

One of the cool things about the Dunes is that every time you go back for a new visit over the years, you get a different perspective. Some of the “live dunes” move a few feet each year, and showcase a vast array of more than 1,400 plant species and trees. The trails are all well-marked and fence off most of the surrounding areas to avoid disturbing the fragile ecology. There are a few places to climb the dunes, including West Beach and Mount Baldy. According to our park guide book, there are also more than 250 species of birds, deer, hognose snakes, and 12-lined racerunners.

Having conquered trail number 8, and our playlist barely dented, it was time to keep moving. Up next, the longest trail, number 10, a 5.5 mile hike through stands of white pines and a “tree graveyard” in the Big Blowout. Blowouts simply put, are dunes formed by the on-shore winds of Lake Michigan. The winds move sand and pile it up to form the dunes, and then plants begin to take hold, stabilizing the sand.

The rain was starting to fall as we headed back to the visitors center. All in all, a great day for a hike and rocking out with our S11 headsets. Time to point Google Maps back towards home, and with the all-day long battery of the DROID RAZR HD, there’s still plenty of juice to get us there, and then some.

We’re happy to announce that the MOTOROLA ATRIX™ HD will be available in a Developer Edition and also be a supported device in the Bootloader Unlock program. It has the same features and specs as the regular MOTOROLA ATRIX HD, but allows the infinite customization possibilities offered by an unlockable bootloader.  Unlocking a bootloader isn’t for everyone, but for some, it’s a must-have.

For a full list of devices that come with an unlockable bootloader, check out the motorola.com/unlockbootloader page, where you’ll also find step-by-step instructions to unlock your device. Contact @MotorolaSupport on Twitter, or the Owners’ Forum for questions you may have.

You should only unlock the bootloader if you’re comfortable with the process and know exactly what you’re doing, since you will be voiding the warranty and risking data and functionality loss.

Features, Software & Apps

In our second in a series of outings around the U.S., we deployed the Field Trip app as our guide to the cool, hidden, and unique things in the world around us. It runs in the background on your phone and when you get close to something interesting, a card pops up with locational details. No click required. If you have a wired or Bluetooth® headset connected, it will read the info to you. Check out this post with video from Google Online Courses Google+ Page

With our DROID RAZR HD BY MOTOROLA in hand, we focused strictly on historical sites and a few current artistic venues this time, relying  on Arcadia Publishing for the treasure trove of information on the early days of Phoenix and some surrounding areas. But for those of you more interested in the present, the app offers plenty of dining, shopping and fun things to do around town with the some of the other partners, including Zagat and Google Offers.

Discovering Phoenix from the 19th through 21st centuries
We headed out with a DROID RAZR HD to check on what ghosts of yesteryear were all around us, brought to our screen by the Field Trip app. The app peels back the layers of time to reveal the realities of the past. Some of the milestones we found: the first Schoolhouse with one teacher that taught every grade in 1873; the first fire-fighting apparatus in 1903; the Phoenix Railroad connecting to Tempe in 1910; their first Cotton Grading site in the 1920s; the Arizona Reptile Gardens in 1930;  the United Producers and Consumers Cooperative for distributing water around town in the 1940s; the Phoenix Art Museum built in 1959 and expanded to its’ current size; and the Eye Lounge, a modern Artist Collective that showcases up and coming talent year round.

Just as was the case in Chicago, this app is all about the art of the wander. Streets you’ve walked down before, or never knew existed, become alive in new ways. A tone and vibration alerts you when crossing another marker.  Stop, look, listen and above all enjoy your journey.
