Martin Cooper receives Draper Award

February 20, 2013 : BY Motorola

Motorola legend Martin Cooper, the leader of our team that developed the first mobile phone, has been named a recipient of the National Academy of Engineerings’ (NAE) Charles Stark Draper Prize, which is their highest honor. Mr. Cooper and a small group of other highly regarded engineers, were recognized in Washington DC for their groundbreaking research in cellular phone technology. This research led to the current era of mobile communications and mobile computing.

Iqbal Arshad, SVP, Global Product Development, Motorola Mobility had this to say:

Long before we messaged people in real-time, had instant maps for anywhere, or streamed movies on our smartphones, Martin Cooper and his team laid the foundations of mobile phone technology. When we look at everything that’s been accomplished thanks to the hard work of Martin and his team, we can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor.

Martin Cooper
Here’s the backstory on Marty Cooper and his mark on mobile history:

On April 3, 1973, Cooper cemented his place in history by becoming the first person to successfully make a handheld cellphone call in public. At the time, Cooper was general manager of Motorola’s Communications Systems Division and leader of a team of engineers that had been working on mobile communication technologies. Standing on Sixth Avenue in New York City, before going into a press conference, Cooper famously placed this groundbreaking call using a Motorola DynaTAC – a device that weighed 2.2 lbs., had 35 minutes of talk-time and a battery life of 20 minutes, all of which was revolutionary at the time.

Widely regarded as the Nobel Prize for engineering, the Charles Stark Draper Prize was established and endowed by Draper Laboratory in 1988 to honor its founder, Dr. Charles Stark Draper, who pioneered inertial navigation. The award recognizes those who have contributed to the advancement of engineering and aims to help improve public awareness of the importance of engineering and technology.

We’re proud to once again be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for being one of the leaders in their Green Power Partnership Program. Motorola placed seventh on the Top 20 Tech and Telecom Green Power list for purchasing 80,000,000 (kWh) of green power, which equals 66% of our total U.S. electricity use coming from wind power.

Here’s a description of the program from the EPA website:

The Green Power Partnership works with a wide variety of leading organizations — from Fortune 500® companies to local, state and federal governments, and a growing number of colleges and universities. The following Top Partner Rankings highlight the annual green power use of leading Green Power Partners within the United States and across individual industry sectors.

Using green power helps reduce the environmental impacts of electricity use and supports the development of new renewable generation capacity nationwide. Usage amounts reflect U.S. operations only and are sourced from U.S.-based green power resources. Organizations can meet EPA Partnership requirements using any combination of three different product options: (1) Renewable Energy Certificates, (2) On-site generation, and (3) Utility green power products.

Our use of wind power is part of several steps we take to reduce our environmental footprint, including using encouraging product recycling and occupying buildings with LEED certification where practical.

Motorola Mobility receives WindMade Certification

February 13, 2013 : BY Motorola

Mother Nature is alive and well, and we’re proud to have taken the pledge and exceeded our expectations in joining the WindMade organization. Our goal is to greatly increase our use of wind and solar resources, to maximize energy efficiency.

From our Director of Sustainability Bill Olson:

“Our reliance on wind power underscores our company-wide commitment to obtaining energy from clean and renewable sources and supports our energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals. WindMade certification validates our sustainability efforts and helps to distinguish our company and its products.”

WindMade certification, which is approved by the Global Wind Energy Council and the United National Global Compact, requires participants to have 25 percent of operations’ power consumption from wind energy in order to qualify for the consumer label. Motorola has 66 percent of the electricity used in U.S. operations coming from wind power.

Before and after Clark Griswold lit up his 250 strands of 25,000 lights in 1980s movie history (Google it), the tradition of decking out the family abode with a blaze of glory has been going strong. We thought we’d take a peek around town and see what some of today’s electrical artists are up to and share them with you. With the DROID RAZR HD and its advanced camera features in hand, we snapped the following pics to showcase our favorite Christmas scenes and maybe inspire you to get creative next year.

Features, Products

Mobile phones have always come with user manuals, FAQs, tutorials and other self-serve help options, trying to answer the question: how the heck do I use this new device. Being the proud and sentient beings that we are, these are oten options we tend to ignore, and instead choose to learn by trial and error. It’s just a phone, of course I can figure it out on my own. But this isn’t your father’s phone, and with the power and features of a sophisticated computer from several years ago, there’s a lot you might be missing by leaving it all to your intuition. One of the reasons people have resisted these helpful tools in the past is the burdensome way that they were written, difficult to find, or the need to go back and forth between your phone and the manual, losing track of which page has which feature, etc.,etc.

Not to worry. With the DROID RAZR M by Motorola, help is just a button away. With everything from how-to videos, easy to navigate FAQs, and support contact info at your fingertips, you won’t be wasting time, you’ll be answering questions quickly and easily. Organized into easy-scroll pages, you’ll find everything you need to understand the settings on your phone. How to do messaging and calendar setup, to find your apps and get new ones easily, to show you how to use new features that come with software updates, and how to reset your phone and contact support. We’re not just talking about passive help here. When you click on many of the items in the support menu, your DROID RAZR M will actually take you on a test run of your new topic. If you want to learn how to ignore an incoming phone call, the Help app will send a fake call to your phone and give you onscreen directions on how to swipe left to end it. If you don’t get it right the first time, the app will coach you until you get it right, and then flash a ‘tutorial completed’ message.

If you need help directly from us, there’s one click access to the Motorola Support Forums, our support phone numbers and email address. You’ll never feel stranded on the tech-support highway again. You probably won’t need it, but rest easy knowing we’ve got your back if you do.

Check out more screenshots of the Help app on the Motorola Google+ page here.
