Today, we would like to share details about something that a lot of our blog readers have been asking about – the next Motorola device to have an unlockable bootloader, the MOTOROLA PHOTON™ Q 4G LTE for Sprint. Available in-stores on Sunday for $199.99 with a new line activation (or eligible upgrade) and a two-year agreement, we want to give a quick overview of how you can unlock your device as well as some general unlockable bootloader questions.

First, is the PHOTON Q the only Motorola device that will have an unlockable bootloader?

Moving forward, we’re hoping to offer an unlockable bootloader on more of our devices and will be determining if that is possible on a phone by phone basis. We have worked closely with our carrier partners to make an unlockable bootloader an option for our consumers with the PHOTON Q and will continue to do so for future devices. Visit the motorola.com/unlockbootloader page to see supported devices.

So why is the PHOTON Q receiving an unlockable bootloader now?

We’ve been able to work with Sprint and come up with a solution that works for everyone involved – you, the carrier and us.  We think we’ve achieved that, and are happy to report that the PHOTON Q will be immediately available to unlock once you purchase it.

Okay, so how do I unlock the bootloader on the PHOTON Q?

Good question! We tried to make it very easy for you. Just go to motorola.com/unlockbootloader for the step-by-step instructions. And once unlocked, you will be able to customize your phone. Of course, if you have any problems, we’re here to help. Contact @motorolasupport on Twitter, or the Owners’ Forum here for questions you may have.

Great, so what should I be made aware of before I go unlock my PHOTON Q?

This is generally something for developers and technically savvy consumers that are interested in modifying their device far more than most folks (such as loading a custom build of Android on your phone).

Before you do anything, there are some  important things to remember:

  1. When we generate the specific unlock key for your device, you will void your phone’s warranty.  Successfully generating the key (which is emailed to you) voids the warranty. Even if you never actually unlock the device with the key, and even if you re-lock the device.  It’s a one-way trip.
  2. When you unlock your bootloader, you wipe out user data on internal memory completely. This includes things like downloaded apps, contacts, text messages, etc.  Data on a removable SD card is retained.
  3. You will lose the ability to play DRM protected content, such as HD movie rentals from the Play Store
  4. You might lose the ability to run some applications successfully
  5. You might lose encryption support
  6. You might lose some key functions like Telephony, Radio, and Audio playback
  7. You could cause permanent/physical damage to your device
  8. This does not change a subsidy lock (e.g. works only with a specific carrier)
  9. You will be bound by the terms of the Legal Agreement.
  10. Please see the additional FAQs here.

The key is before you unlock your phone is to make sure you backup everything and that you’re comfortable with no longer having a warranty for your phone.

Got it, any last words of advice?

The bottom line here is that people should unlock their bootloader only if they feel comfortable with the process and know exactly what they’re doing. Unlocking the bootloader may not be for everyone but for those that do, happy bootloading and thanks for your patience!

Motorola Mobility employees are an Appy bunch

July 31, 2012 : BY Motorola

But maybe that’s just because the Motorola Mobility Foundation helps them learn how to build their own mobile apps

For a week, starting July 30, the Motorola Mobility Foundation will be hosting an App Boot Camp “Basic Training Week” where employees can learn how to build, design and test their own mobile apps using the MIT app inventor. Because Motorola has people working all over the world, the hour-long webinars will held at various times so everyone can attend.

The webinars will teach employees how to design, build, and test a unique mobile app in the hopes that they will be inspired to share their new skills with organizations and institutions in their communities.

The Foundation believes that teaching individuals how to create apps will not only empower them to engineer apps for personal or public use, but it will also ignite a trend of innovation among the participants – a trend that they hope will continue to spread as App Boot Camps continue to be held around the world.
So far, 375 employees from around the world have signed up.

Motorola: From the Archives

June 29, 2012 : BY Motorola

What do a DynaTAC cellular telephone, a photograph of the first Motorola facility in Chicago, and a service manual for a GoldenView television have in common?

They’re all assets in the Motorola Archives!

The Motorola Archives is a dynamic resource of knowledge that cannot be found anywhere else in the company. It is the central storage location for documents, photographs, advertisements, products and memorabilia, and more recently, digital and audiovisual materials as well.

Though it wasn’t established until 1973, the archives has the entire history of Motorola documented, starting with its founding on September 25, 1928. The archives is much more than a nostalgic look at the past. It helps drive Motorola innovation forward.

“This department is more than a closet of a few file folders.  It is a facility that is dedicated to the preservation of a rich, dynamic history that began in 1928.  I am always actively collecting, evaluating, researching and making resourses available to customers around the world, both internally and externally,” explains Lisa Solak, who manages the Motorola Mobility Archives.

Motorola Mobility Heritage Services has its own professional archivist who manages and provides access to archives collections, which start with the company’s establishment in 2011.  While the Motorola, Inc. Legacy Archives Collection documents the years between 1928 and 2010. The Legacy Archives Collection is shared by both companies and continues to acquire key materials created before the separation.

Empowering People through Mobile Technology

June 27, 2012 : BY Motorola

Can mobile technology help the blind?  Enable more people to purchase farm-fresh foods?  Empower citizen-scientists to reduce invasive plant and insect species? Increase high school students’ skills in math and science?  Yes.  It can do that and so much more.
Curious and creative minds at nonprofit organizations throughout the United States are asking these kinds of questions every day. And the Motorola Mobility Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Motorola Mobility, is proud to help them make their dreams a reality. Combined with other grant-making programs this year, the Motorola Mobility Foundation has provided one million dollars in funding for digital, social, and mobile technology programs that expand awareness and engagement in communities across the country.

These are just a few of the exciting programs underway:

  • Horizons for the Blind will revolutionize the way people who are blind or visually impaired shop. A mobile scanning application will give users quick and efficient access to product information on the go.
  • Thousands of low-income shoppers who rely on Food Stamps can’t use them at farmers markets.  Just Harvest Education Fund is about to change all that by equipping the Pittsburg Citi-Parks farmers markets with wireless technology to process food stamps as well as credit and debit cards; making fresh, healthy food accessible to everyone regardless of income.
  • The Adler Planetarium will develop Explorers Wanted, a location-based alternate reality game using online, social and mobile media to engage the Chicago community in astronomy through positive, personal experiences. Gamers will use a series of clues and challenges to advance the plot of an overarching story, culminating at the museum for an exclusive, final event.

This year’s largest grant was awarded to the Center for Mobile Learning at the MIT Media Lab.  The year-long collaboration between MIT and the Motorola Mobility Foundation will create a signature curriculum based on App Inventor, a simple tool for building Android applications.  It will focus on empowering young learners in the world of mobile computing by giving them the ability to create and personalize their own mobile applications.

The Motorola Mobility Foundation focuses its funding on education, community, health and wellness and disaster relief. For more information, on Motorola Mobility Corporate and Foundation giving, visit Motorola.com/give
