Motorola is no stranger to green product innovation. In 2009 we were the world’s first company  to use recycled plastic to build a mobile phone.  That same year we also introduced the world’s first Carbonfree® cell phone – the W233 Renew.  And after continual development of  carbon-neutral smartphones and mobile device accessories, Carbonfund.org Foundation gave us the For Planet and People Award in recognition of our commitment to sustainable practices.

To offset the carbon dioxide required to manufacture, distribute and operate some of our products, we got involved with several different types of projects including reforestation in different parts of the US and renewable energy creation from landfills. We’ve worked hard to make sure that more than just the phone is carbon neutral — the entire two-year working life, including use, is CarbonFree®!

“Motorola Mobility is pleased to have partnered with Carbonfund.org to bring CarbonFree mobile phone and accessory products to market and provide people with great products built with the planet in mind” said Bill Olson, Director of the Office Sustainability and Stewardship at Motorola Mobility.

Reducing Motorola’s environmental impact isn’t just for Earth Day – we work to make our devices more green every day. Throughout the lifecycle of our products, we strive to reduce waste and our carbon footprint.

In 2009, the MOTO™ W233 Renew was the world’s first mobile phone made of plastic from recycled water cooler bottles. With the goal of reducing Motorola’s energy consumption, we made a new recycled plastic that requires 20% less energy to make than standard plastic and saves thousands of water cooler bottles from finding their way into a landfill each year.

“But wait,” you say. “Making a device out of recycled plastic isn’t all that tough, right?” Wrong! We spent four long years in our labs, testing, reformulating and perfecting this material. We want to make sure it met the same tough quality standards we apply to other materials.

Since then, we’ve launched another six products with this material, including the Motorola CITRUS™ and SPICE™ and the P793 and P893 universal power supplies.

We’re also proud to have recently won a Carbonfund.org award:

…our CarbonFree Products winner, Motorola Mobility. Carbonfund.org congratulates and thanks them for their commitment to sustainable practices and to the support of important external carbon reductions.  In 2009 Motorola was the first company in the world to introduce a CarbonFree mobile phone.  In 2010 Motorola continued to innovate by introducing the worlds first carbonFree smartphone and mobile device accessories.
