We’re proud to once again be recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for being one of the leaders in their Green Power Partnership Program. Motorola placed seventh on the Top 20 Tech and Telecom Green Power list for purchasing 80,000,000 (kWh) of green power, which equals 66% of our total U.S. electricity use coming from wind power.

Here’s a description of the program from the EPA website:

The Green Power Partnership works with a wide variety of leading organizations — from Fortune 500® companies to local, state and federal governments, and a growing number of colleges and universities. The following Top Partner Rankings highlight the annual green power use of leading Green Power Partners within the United States and across individual industry sectors.

Using green power helps reduce the environmental impacts of electricity use and supports the development of new renewable generation capacity nationwide. Usage amounts reflect U.S. operations only and are sourced from U.S.-based green power resources. Organizations can meet EPA Partnership requirements using any combination of three different product options: (1) Renewable Energy Certificates, (2) On-site generation, and (3) Utility green power products.

Our use of wind power is part of several steps we take to reduce our environmental footprint, including using encouraging product recycling and occupying buildings with LEED certification where practical.

Motorola Mobility receives WindMade Certification

February 13, 2013 : BY Motorola

Mother Nature is alive and well, and we’re proud to have taken the pledge and exceeded our expectations in joining the WindMade organization. Our goal is to greatly increase our use of wind and solar resources, to maximize energy efficiency.

From our Director of Sustainability Bill Olson:

“Our reliance on wind power underscores our company-wide commitment to obtaining energy from clean and renewable sources and supports our energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals. WindMade certification validates our sustainability efforts and helps to distinguish our company and its products.”

WindMade certification, which is approved by the Global Wind Energy Council and the United National Global Compact, requires participants to have 25 percent of operations’ power consumption from wind energy in order to qualify for the consumer label. Motorola has 66 percent of the electricity used in U.S. operations coming from wind power.

Motorola is no stranger to green product innovation. In 2009 we were the world’s first company  to use recycled plastic to build a mobile phone.  That same year we also introduced the world’s first Carbonfree® cell phone – the W233 Renew.  And after continual development of  carbon-neutral smartphones and mobile device accessories, Carbonfund.org Foundation gave us the For Planet and People Award in recognition of our commitment to sustainable practices.

To offset the carbon dioxide required to manufacture, distribute and operate some of our products, we got involved with several different types of projects including reforestation in different parts of the US and renewable energy creation from landfills. We’ve worked hard to make sure that more than just the phone is carbon neutral — the entire two-year working life, including use, is CarbonFree®!

“Motorola Mobility is pleased to have partnered with Carbonfund.org to bring CarbonFree mobile phone and accessory products to market and provide people with great products built with the planet in mind” said Bill Olson, Director of the Office Sustainability and Stewardship at Motorola Mobility.

Reducing Motorola’s environmental impact isn’t just for Earth Day – we work to make our devices more green every day. Throughout the lifecycle of our products, we strive to reduce waste and our carbon footprint.

In 2009, the MOTO™ W233 Renew was the world’s first mobile phone made of plastic from recycled water cooler bottles. With the goal of reducing Motorola’s energy consumption, we made a new recycled plastic that requires 20% less energy to make than standard plastic and saves thousands of water cooler bottles from finding their way into a landfill each year.

“But wait,” you say. “Making a device out of recycled plastic isn’t all that tough, right?” Wrong! We spent four long years in our labs, testing, reformulating and perfecting this material. We want to make sure it met the same tough quality standards we apply to other materials.

Since then, we’ve launched another six products with this material, including the Motorola CITRUS™ and SPICE™ and the P793 and P893 universal power supplies.

We’re also proud to have recently won a Carbonfund.org award:

…our CarbonFree Products winner, Motorola Mobility. Carbonfund.org congratulates and thanks them for their commitment to sustainable practices and to the support of important external carbon reductions.  In 2009 Motorola was the first company in the world to introduce a CarbonFree mobile phone.  In 2010 Motorola continued to innovate by introducing the worlds first carbonFree smartphone and mobile device accessories.

Get some green for being green, with Motorola

November 15, 2011 : BY Motorola

It’s America Recycles Day. We’re taking part and so should you; we promise it will be a rewarding experience.

You’ve been wanting a new phone; we’ve got a couple great reasons to upgrade. For a limited time, when you buy a DROID RAZR by Motorola from our site and recycle an old phone through our U.S. take back program we’ll give you a $25 Visa gift card. Talk about a win-win!

Our concern for the environment isn’t new. Over the years we’ve made great products even better through the power of ECOMOTO. We are constantly improving the materials, energy and packaging we use as well as our products’ designs and customer experience. Take this for example: Since January every new phone and accessory we’ve launched is free of brominated-flame retardants, polyvinyl chloride and phthalates, elements that are a little more than just scary sounding.

Now’s your chance. With America Recycles Day upon us, it’s the perfect time to get a crazy-thin DROID RAZR. Just recycle those mobile devices that are collecting dust anyway and we’ll give you a gift card for your effort. Did we mention the devices don’t even need to be made by Motorola and we’ll pay for shipping?  It’s our way of saying, “Happy America Recycles Day!”

We have take back programs on our own and in partnership with carriers, customers, retailers and recyclers in 70 countries, covering more than 90 percent of our global mobile phone unit sales. Our take-back programs accept any mobile phone or accessory. Some phones are refurbished for reuse and then sent to developing countries where they are sold at a low price, helping to boost access to communications. In 2010, we collected more than 3,904 tonnes of electronic equipment waste for recycling.

Learn more about recycling you’re old mobile devices and look for locations worldwide at Motorola’s recycling page.
