indoor maps

How To

Ok, so Thanksgiving is over and you’ve had your fill of Turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, stuffing, pie and whatever else your particular holiday table was filled with. Now it’s Black Friday and it’s time to get your deals on and head out to the stores. Your fully charged DROID RAZR MAXX HD BY MOTOROLA will be sure to get you through the day with it’s long-life battery, with up to 32 hours of mixed use charge ready to play.

Did you know that Google Maps now has indoor maps for many of your favorite retailers and shopping malls at participating locations? You can see a list of places here, and if you want to map out a location ahead of time before it’s swarmed with bodies, you can upload your own floor plan here. Watch a video to see how to do it.

Indoor maps work very much like the Google maps you’re used to:

  1. Find an available Indoor Maps location.
  2. Zoom into the map until you start to see an indoor floor plan of the building.
  3. Use the level switcher to move from the ground floor to other available floors in the building.

Depending on the data available, the map will show what you need most in the building you’re currently viewing, including stores, restrooms, food, and more. Touch any indoor location to learn more. Search results for Indoor Maps won’t show unless you’re fully zoomed into a building where an indoor map is available. Searching works just like it does in the rest of Google Maps for mobile.

You can also see where your friends are in the mall if you get them all signed up in Google Maps’ Latitude. It’s easy and a great way to keep tabs on each other.

Open Google Maps for mobile and go to the Map view.

  1. Touch your device’s Menu button and select Join Latitude.
  2. Note that if you want to check in to locations, you’ll need to create a Google+ profile. If you want to join Latitude with a different account, touch Switch accounts from the Maps menu.
  3. Add friends from your Google Contacts or using their email addresses.
  4. Choose your privacy settings.
  5. Start sharing and updating your location from your phone.

So if your BFF is shopping for your gifts, you can see what stores she is headed too, and you might have to remind her of your wish list so you don’t get those Rhinestone ear muffs from Rhinestones R’ Us.

All these Google Maps features are free to download, but make sure to monitor your data usage as these functions do use your carrier’s data plan.

Now that you have your route planned out, know what your friends and family are up to, it’s time to make sure you get the best deals, and these apps should help with that.

Software & Apps

To drive or not to drive, that is the question. The answer is a lot simpler with schedules for over one million public transit stops worldwide now available when you download the updated Google Maps for Android app (version 6.10) from the Google Play Store. The Transit Lines layer has been modified so that you can select a specific mode of public transportation (train, bus, tram or subway) to display on the mobile map, while eliminating those you don’t need. If you already have the app on your device, hit the update button in the app store.

Offline Maps is great for those times when an internet connection isn’t available, and your GPS is on, so you can search routes that have been saved to your device. With many countries supported, your maps can get you from point a to point b in numerous time zones across the globe. Live driving directions and other features don’t work in offline maps, so please visit this page to see the latest information.

Some of the other Google Maps features have enhancements as well, including indoor maps, which can help you navigate malls and airports, local search, and of course directions and navigation.

It’s your world, so go ahead and map it the way you want to on your Android-powered Motorola device.
