When we head out with our DROID RAZR MAXX HD by Motorola, we are taking not only our phone with us, but a sophisticated computer that organizes our lives and may have our schedules, email, documents, photos, videos, passwords and other important information. Therefore, it is essential that we do everything we can ahead of time to make sure that if the phone is lost or stolen, others can’t access and corrupt our personal data.

There are some great apps in the Google Play store that can help you keep tabs on and locate our phone if we lose track of it. One of them is SeekDroid Anti-Theft & Security which allows you to track, locate, and wipe clean your device remotely. Another is Find My Phone, which has some of the same features and also allows you to monitor the phones of  your entire family. You can check out this article on DROID LIFE to read more about recovering your lost device.

Before you worry about losing it though, we’ve included some helpful tips below to make sure you’re protected right out of the gate, so you can feel more at ease if you do misplace it.

How do I protect my phone from unauthorized use?
You can make the touchscreen lock when it goes to sleep. Touch  > Settings > Security & Screen lock > Screen lock, then select the lock type:

  • None: Turn off the screen lock.
  • Slide: Flick  to the right to unlock.
  • Face Unlock: Look at your smartphone to unlock it.
  • Pattern: Draw a pattern to unlock.
  • PIN: Enter digits to unlock.
  • Password: Enter letters, digits, or symbols to unlock.

Note: You can make emergency calls on a locked smartphone. A locked smartphone still rings, but you need to unlock it to answer.

Face unlock
Use face recognition to unlock your smartphone.
Note: This feature is less secure than a pattern, PIN, or password.
To get started, Touch  > Settings > Security & Screen lock > Screen lock > Face Unlock > Set it up.
Follow the prompts and look at the front camera lens. When face capture is complete, choose a pattern or PIN (for backup and to change the lock setting).
To unlock the smartphone, flick  to the right and look at the front camera lens.

Pattern

To set the lock pattern, Touch  > Settings > Security & Screen lock > Screen lock > Pattern.
Follow the instructions to draw your lock pattern.
When prompted, draw the pattern to unlock the smartphone.

PIN
To set a PIN, Touch  > Settings > Security & Screen lock  > Screen lock > PIN.
Enter a numeric PIN, then confirm it.
When prompted, enter the PIN to unlock the smartphone.

Password
To set the password, Touch  > Settings > Security & Screen lock  > Screen lock > Password.
Enter a password (up to eight characters), then confirm it.
When prompted, enter the password to unlock the smartphone.

Personalize your lock screen
To change your timeout, touch Touch  > Settings > Display > Sleep. If you don’t touch the screen or press any keys for the amount of time you select, the screen locks automatically.

Lock & unlock
To lock your smartphone screen, do any one of these:

  • Press the Power key.
  • Let the screen time out (don’t press anything).
  • Switch off the power.

To unlock your smartphone screen, press the Power key to wake the touchscreen display, then perform the unlock procedure required by the lock screen (slide, face unlock, pattern, PIN, or password).

Can’t unlock your smartphone?
Face unlock: If your smartphone doesn’t recognize your face, you’ll be prompted to enter your backup pattern or PIN code to unlock it.
Pattern: If you make five unsuccessful attempts to enter your lock pattern, you can touch Forgot pattern and enter the Gmail™ user name and password you set up as your main Google™ account when you registered your device. You will then be able to create a new pattern and unlock your device.
PIN or password: If you forget your PIN or password, you can enter the Google™Gmail™ user name and password you set up when you registered your device. You will then be able to create a new PIN or password and unlock your device.
If you don’t have a Google™ account on your smartphone, contact Verizon Wireless to have your device factory reset.

Warning: A factory reset will delete all data on your smartphone.

When it comes to protecting personal stuff, the majority of people are concerned about security; 1 in 4 people would even prefer to share their toothbrush over their phone, a recent survey by Motorola Mobility found.

Think about it…these days just about everything can be done from your phone. Whether it’s going through work email or moving money, shopping from an online store or adding pictures that only friends should see, it can be done from the palm of your hand.

With so much being done with phones, we wanted to know what you’re doing to protect them.  We talked with 1,000 smartphone owners who use their devices for personal and professional purposes, the so-called prosumers. We found that even though these people are concerned with security, they’re not doing enough to protect themselves:

  • Forty-five percent confess they’ve never installed security applications on their smartphones
  • More than one third store critical personal information, like email passwords and bank account numbers, on their smartphones
  • Nearly half have of respondents log into an unsecured wireless network using their smartphone
  • Only 40 percent would reset their work email password if they lost their phone

Your phone may have more details about your life than you realize, what are you doing to protect it?

If you’ve thought about security but don’t know where to start, we can help.  Motorola has a series of devices that are Business Ready, which means they have several advanced security features, like remote wipe. The latest phones that are Business Ready include: DROID RAZR by Motorola, DROID BIONIC by Motorola, and Motorola Photon 4G.
