We know you’ve been waiting for it, and now it’s here.  For all you Motorola XOOM owners out there on the Verizon Wireless network: welcome to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which makes your tablet more powerful and easier to use.

XOOM ICS

We wanted to make sure everything was just right before pushing this out, and hope you’ll enjoy all the new capabilities you now have at your fingertips.  The upgrade is now being rolled out in stages, and everyone on the Verizon Wireless network should have it on their Motorola XOOM this week.

Once you have it, you might experience a brief sense of disorientation – don’t panic!  It’s only temporary.  Soon you’ll be zipping along enjoying all the new enhancements for your tablet, including:

  • Faster web surfing, with an updated browser that delivers faster rendering, zoom and pan.  It’s also easier to get to the desktop versions of websites, and you can save pages to read offline.
  • Instant access to your favorite apps, shortcuts and folders from any home screen.  Try out the new customizable Launch Bar — easily drag apps, shortcuts and folders in or out of it for easier access than ever before.
  • Improved accuracy with the keyboard, including an in-line spellchecker; or touch the microphone and start talking to see real-time speech-to-text (with punctuation!) with more than twenty languages supported.
  • We know you’ve always loved the Recent Apps feature, and now it’s even better than before!  You can easily dismiss apps by swiping them away.
  • A new on-tablet photo editor so you can make masterpieces of your snapshots: crop and rotate images, add special effects, and remove redeye.  You can also take panoramic pictures easily with the new single motion panorama mode.  Taking video?  Try out new fun effects that give your friends big eyes, squeezed heads, or new backgrounds.
  • Some apps are just meant to be together.  Now you can create custom folders to access them with just one touch.

2011’s Top Motorola Mobility Moments

December 29, 2011 : BY Motorola

2011 was a year full of memorable moments for Motorola Mobility in the US, highlighted by exciting new device launches, which included introducing the next generation of an old classic. Take a look at our timeline for some of our favorite flashbacks from a remarkable year:

January 5: Motorola ATRIX paved the way for the rest of our smartphones this year with its 1GHz dual core processor and Webtop application making it the most powerful mobile computing device yet.

January 5: Motorola XOOM tablet was announced boasting a beautiful button-less design. The first device to run the Honeycomb operating system, the Motorola XOOM redefined the tablet experience and kept you connected.

May 18: Motorola DROID X2 took it to the next level with Double the Power, Double the Does.

June 9: Motorola Photon 4G didn’t hold anyone back with its unparalleled speeds. Thanks to all who made the Motorola Photon 4G Speed Hour on Facebook a resounding success!

July 7: We announced the next generation of Does with the DROID 3 by Motorola. A sleek but powerful full QWERTY smartphone that kept you talking and surfing the web faster than before.

September 7: We announced the DROID BIONIC by Motorola. With it, you had the power to control everything with the lighting fast speed, massive amounts of storage and endless possibilities for entertainment and business.

August 15: We announced the Motorola DEFY+, a phone that is water resistant, scratch resistant, dust proof and boredom proof.

October 11: With Motorola ATRIX 2, we amped up the entertainment value of the original device. Perfect for accessing pictures, videos and games instantaneously to feel effortlessly “state of the art”.

October 14: The whole family needed to be included in the Motorola XOOM experience, so we announced the Motorola XOOM Family Edition. A device built to last and fun for children young and old.

October 18: We brought back an old classic and launched the jaw-dropping DROID RAZR by Motorola. It’s too powerful to fall into the wrong hands with blazing fast speeds and an ultra-thin design.

October 18: Motorola dove into the fitness world with the announcement of the Motorola MOTOACTV. This device tracks performance and works as your own personal trainer.

December 6: One tablet in 2011 wasn’t enough. Motorola announced not one, but two new tablets with the DROID XYBOARD 8.2 and DROID XYBOARD 10.1. If all you do is search the web and check out the latest videos the 8.2 is for you, but if you are all about business, the 10.1 is the perfect addition.

December 15: We launched the DROID RAZR by Motorola in “snowed-covered” white, just in time for the holidays.

What was your favorite Motorola moment of 2011?

At Motorola Mobility we believe technology should simplify, connect and enrich people’s lives. That’s why we and the Motorola Foundation partnered with Autism Speaks to give families with autistic children Motorola XOOM tablets.

The Motorola XOOM is a great tool for autistic children because there aren’t distracting peripherals and the touchscreen interface is very intuitive.

Working with Autism Speaks and the Motorola Foundation, we gave forty-five families with autistic children in the Chicago and San Diego areas Motorola XOOMs. The families are using the tablets every day to help their children build communication skills, improve confidence and increase sociability.

“[The XOOM] helps him with his independence, we’ve taught him it is his device and he is proud of it. The screen size of Motorola XOOM is essential- it is similar to a standard piece of paper, so he can practice his handwriting skills accurately, and the video modeling is much more engaging,” explained one family member in the program.

We know our products are great for techies wanting the latest gadget, but we also believe they are more than that. So we’re working with researchers and application developers to make even more resources available to families with autistic children.

Listen to some of the families in the program and hear what they have to say.
