Motorola’s MPx200: First of Motorola’s Next-Gen Smart Phone initiative in India

New Delhi, 6 May 2004: Motorola, a leading player in the mobile handset market in the country, has kicked off its state-of-the-art Smart Phone initiative in India with the launch of the MPx200 handset. The first in a series of Motorola Smart Phones, with Windows MobileTM operating software, the MPx200 is unique. It combines the power of a personal computer with the 24-hour convenience of a mobile phone.

The MPx200 is targeted at the ‘always-on-the-go’ professional—who needs to stay connected at all times. The handset combines the convenience of a mobile phone and the power of the Microsoft Smart Phone operating system platform. It offers the user instant access to mails, using the familiar Outlook® interface. The Smart Phone enables chat on MSN Messenger®, viewing of documents and files using MS Word®, MS Excel® and MS Powerpoint®, and browse the Web through Internet Explorer®.

“Through the MPx200, our alliance with Microsoft allows us to offer customers an always-at-hand Smart Phone, that packs the power of a personal computer at the click of a button—making life simpler, smarter and synchronized to professional needs,” said Percy P. Batlivala, General Manager (South-West Asia), Personal Communication Sector, Motorola. “We’re gaining ground steadily in the Indian mobile handset space. Launch of the MPx200, and other Smart Phone models in coming months, should see our market-share increasing significantly,” he added.

Initially, the MPx200 will be offered to customers through the Hutch/Orange distribution channels and direct sales teams. Customers can purchase the MPx200 at select Hutch/Orange retail outlets at a price of Rs 25,995.

“The MPx200 launch marks a new beginning for Motorola—to collaborate on a series of Smart Phone and Pocket PC wireless devices designed to create a virtual remote-control for today’s professional,” Mr Batliwala said. “At Motorola, the proposition is simple, yet compelling. Having always been at the forefront of technology, we will utilize the Smart Phone initiative to showcase technological superiority in the most telling and visible manner; in the hands of the Indian mobile phone user,” he added.
