Motorola researchers are developing technologies that will enable mobile phones, 2-way radios and other communication devices to be software-upgradeable, programmable multi-mode and multi-band for greater flexibility. Such products could, for example, be reprogrammed in the field to enable emergency and safety workers from multiple units to establish a common frequency channel for seamless communication across units.
Consumers will be able to upgrade their mobile phones by simply downloading new software over-the-air. These devices could also be capable of performing multiple functions simultaneously, enabling the user to browse the Internet or send a fax while carrying on a telephone conversation.
Motorola Labs researchers are focused on such enabling technologies as the physical (RF) layer, frequency generation, modulation and demodulation, data conversion and signal processing, as well as the means to ensure secure over-the air software downloads. One key issue to developing such future products is the resolution of industry-wide spectrum issues.
