Recycling

Motorola is a strong proponent and supporter of global environmental sustainability and recycling programs. In partnership with our carriers, customers, retailers and recyclers, and on our own, we operate takeback programs across the globe. In fact, Motorola is expanding its takeback initiatives to make it easier for consumers to participate wherever our products are sold. Presently, countries where Motorola runs or participates in takeback schemes represent more than 80% of our global mobile phone unit sales — and we expect that number to continue to grow.

For more details on specific local recycling initiatives, please select a location from the following list:

From 2004 through 2006, Motorola's worldwide takeback programs recovered 5,000 metric tons of electronic and electric equipment waste for recycling. This includes: 1) Takeback programs, both regulated and voluntary; 2) Internal electronics recycling efforts; and, 3) External electronics recycling events sponsored by Motorola. This chart does not include electronics recycled through other industry, partnership or carrier programs. See details below:

This second chart (below) illustrates the increasing rate of our global mobile phone takeback efforts. Specifically, this shows the relative number of mobile phones taken back for recycling in the year noted, compared with those sold 12-24 months prior. This positive trend includes data from both our regulated and voluntary programs globally but does not include any data from programs operated by our carriers and retailers, which would be additive.

WEEE Recycling DirectiveThe European Union’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive became law in most EU countries during 2005. This will affect product design and end of life recycling of electrical and electronic equipment. As a major manufacturer, Motorola is impacted by this directive, as are our customers and consumers. The directive applies to the disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment within the 25 member states of the European Union.

As part of the legislation, electrical and electronic equipment, including Motorola products, will feature the crossed out wheeled bin symbol (see image at left) on the product or in the documentation, to show that these products must be disposed of in accordance with the WEEE Directive. Motorola will comply fully with all legislation across all our businesses wherever we operate around the globe, including the WEEE Directive. Specifically, with relevance to these directives, we strive to:

  • Protect the environment by improving our environmental performance and designing environmentally conscious products
  • Operate with transparency and the highest standards of ethics and law in directing and managing the company for all stakeholders
