Philanthropy:
Employee Involvement

In October 2006, Motorola conducted its first Global Day of Service to encourage employees to volunteer in their local communities. More than 9,000 employees in 40 countries took a half day or more off work to volunteer. They worked alongside non-government organizations at 240 schools, parks, libraries and other project sites. Thousands of employees also participated in in-office projects, donating books, school supplies and clothing to people in need. (See Global Day of Service photos).

Motorola encourages volunteering year-round, too. The global CEO Award for Volunteerism recognizes exceptional dedication by Motorola employees. Each of the 12 winners receives US$5,000 to contribute to the non-profit organizations where they volunteer. Anyone may nominate an employee or team of employees for the award.

U.S. employees who volunteer more than 40 hours a year with a community organization may apply for a volunteer grant to the organization from the Motorola Foundation.

Employee giving
Throughout the year, employees around the world reach into their own wallets to extend support to local organizations. Their gifts can mean:

  • Refuge for battered women and their children
  • Research to conquer cancer
  • Strengthened educational institutions
  • Affordable child care for low-income families
  • Job training for young people who need a hand up
  • Communities that are better, safer, healthier places to live and work

In 2006, employees in the U.S. donated more than US$1.9 million through the employee giving campaign, the Motorola Foundation matched US$1.03 million in U.S. employee gifts to educational institutions and non-profit organizations.
