Motorola in Canada

Canada was selected as the site for the first international expansion by Motorola, Inc. in 1947.   Motorola Canada has 370 employees with offices located in major urban centers across the country.
In Canada all three business units are present: Mobile Devices, Enterprise Mobility Solutions and Home and Networks Mobility
 
Milestones
 
1940- 1960
  • 1947 - 1957 : Rogers Majestic Electronics Corporation, part of Philips group of companies, was licensed to distribute Motorola products in Canada
  • 1947 - 1957 : Canadian Radio Manufacturing Corporation manufactured Motorola products, also a Philips company.
  • 1957 : Motorola Canada is incorporated and represents Motorola’s first subsidiary outside the United States with R.M. Brophy as its first President.
  • 1960 : Full production of products including mobile two-way radio, radio relay, microwave and power line carrier
  • 1967 : Motorola Canada’s head offices moves to Steeles and Woodbine
1970
  • 1979 : Motorola Canada obtains world product mandate to develop and manufacture its first fully synthesized wideband radio (MCX100) by the team that became known as the Toronto Design Centre
1980
  • 1982 : Trunked Radio introduced to Canada
  • 1985 : First portable hand-held cellular phone in Canada 8000x
  • 1985 : First patented hands-free cellular telephone
  • 1986 : Motorola Canada Limited is selected as supplier to the Winter Olympics in Calgary for two-way radio, paging and cellular communications    products
  • 1986 : Introduces ‘People Finder’ private paging systems; PMR 2000 alphanumeric pager with 32 character display
  • 1988 : Acquisition of Mobile Data International Inc. (MDI) of Richmond, B.C.
  • 1988 : First Malcolm Baldrige award for Quality given to Motorola
  • 1988 : JV between Motorola and BCE Mobile Communications for national ratio data network (MOBIDATA)
  • 1989 : First pocket phone (Micro-T.A.C.)
1990
  • 1990 : Motorola Canada designs and manufactures packet switched products recognized as best in class (6500) series
  • 1991 : Motorola Canada introduces it’s Canadian designed wireless data modem
  • 1997 : iDEN launches in Canada with Clearnet
  • 1997 : Launch first digital PCS handset
  • 1999 : Open software design centre in Montreal
2000
  • 2001 : Motorola Canada moves head quarters to new facility in Markham
