  Applications Research Labs

Research and development at the application level is critical to enabling uninterrupted access to information and entertainment. Motorola’s applications research takes place in labs around the world and focuses on enterprise applications, multimedia, personalization, pervasive platforms and social media.

Enterprise Applications Research Lab
The Enterprise Applications Research Lab creates technologies and applications to enable a seamless real-time mobile enterprise. To leverage collective intelligence and enable composite applications, the lab focuses on context-aware mobile platform middleware and trust-enabled security frameworks.

Entertainment Platform Lab
The Entertainment Platforms Lab creates new applications and services in areas such as gaming, music, video and gambling. The lab explores novel and compelling consumer experiences to place future entertainment in the hands of consumers. It does this by innovating and using technologies such as 3D graphics, 3D persona (avatars) and virtual worlds, device-to-device sharing, and dissemination of entertainment content and experiences.

Multimedia Research Lab
The Multimedia Research Lab creates media processing technologies and their applications to provide users with rich quality media experiences across mobile and home devices.  Research on wideband speech coding and enhancements, as well as advanced video coding, is enabling better quality speech communication and video applications.  Based on metadata processing and media association research, the lab creates new media consumption experiences across home and mobile devices. And, its media adaptation research is helping to automatically tailor media to specific uses across devices.

Personalization and Knowledge Lab
The Personalization and Knowledge Lab creates intelligent and personalized applications that decrease complexity and enhance user experiences. The lab is researching ways to automatically generate and intelligently use metadata and personal information to create context-aware systems that can adapt to user preferences, behaviors and environments. By building advanced knowledge models, devices can learn what users want and need, creating a more personalized experience.

Pervasive Platforms and Architectures Lab
The Pervasive Platforms and Architectures Lab creates platforms and middleware for mobile devices and the connected home, enabling compelling media and entertainment experiences for TV, video, music and games. Technology areas of focus include context-awareness enablers (including smart sensing technologies), distributed and P2P architectures (with particular focus on energy-efficiency, security, privacy and trust), user interaction frameworks and monetization enablers (including advertising and micropayment). The lab creates realistic application prototypes to demonstrate the scalability and potential leverage in a novel architecture.

Social Media Research Lab
The Social Media Research Lab creates application concepts and enabling technologies to connect social groups using new media. Combining user-generated and commercial content with communication and rich presence, researchers are creating the next generation of mobile media applications. Bringing together a diverse team of engineers and user-centered design specialists, the lab passionately focuses on user-driven innovation including user studies, iterative prototyping and field trials. Researchers work closely with Motorola's Early Stage Accelerator and product teams to commercialize the lab's work.
