Wind and Solar Cellsites
Powering cellsites can be a real challlenge for operators where it is difficult to provision mains electrical power and must use high-cost alternatives such as diesel generators. Cellsites powered by renewable energy can help lower these costs.

Motorola has successfully run a year-long wind- and solar-powered cellsite at its Swindon R&D facility in the UK. The trial concluded that an optimized solar and wind solution can generate enough power to drive a mid-sized base station (BTS) plus ancillaries. The next step will be a commercial customer trial using a 6-carrier BTS cellsite, being implemented in the first half of 2007.

Localized Solutions
To support operators with cost-effective network expansion, Motorola has introduced a new commercial and production strategy that aims to reduce initial network rollout costs by having elements of its Reach GSM portfolio manufactured locally.

The Reach Strongbox, a DC Outdoor Enclosure for Motorola’s Horizon II macro BTS, is the first product delivered under this strategy. Phased deployments of over 1,300 units have been started in India to serve major cellular operators in the local market.

This localized production approach brings benefits in production costs and through lower duties and taxes. Motorola will also roll out this strategy to other markets, including China and Africa.
