On 27 February 2007, new legislation in the UK (excluding Northern Ireland) increased the penalties for using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving. From this date you will be penalised a minimum of a fixed penalty of £60 and three penalty points on your licence if caught using a phone while driving, unless you use a hands-free device.

Highlights of the revised Road Safety Act are:

  • You will be penalised with a minimum of a fixed penalty of £60 and three penalty points on your licence if caught using a phone while driving, unless you use a compliant hands-free device.
  • These penalties can mean higher insurance costs.
  • If the case goes to court, you risk a maximum fine of £1,000, which rises to £2,500 for the driver of a goods vehicle or a vehicle adapted to carry more than eight passengers, together with possible disqualification from driving.

And remember, under the existing laws in the UK, if you get six points within two years of passing
your driving test, your licence will be revoked and you will need to re-sit the test.

Please see the Act itself for the official requirements.
