Motorola to Upgrade NTELOS CDMA Networks to 3G

$44 million Contract for Virginia and West Virginia Markets

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Feb. 13, 2002 – Motorola’s Global Telecom Solutions Sector has been awarded a $44 million contract to upgrade the NTELOS CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) networks to third generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X capability and it installs new call switching capacity.

The contract, which includes upgrading existing base station transceivers, covers the NTELOS networks in the West Virginia cities of Huntington, Morgantown, Charleston, Beckley and Bluefield, and in the Virginia cities of Charlottesville, Lynchburg, Danville, Martinsville, Roanoke, Waynesboro and Staunton.

This contract win becomes the seventh CDMA2000 1X contract announced by Motorola for networks in the United States and 13th announced contract worldwide.

“With this contract, we will equip our network with the infrastructure necessary for future wireless subscriber growth,” said James Quarforth, chief executive officer for NTELOS. ”Motorola is a proven leader in designing, planning and optimizing CDMA networks,” said Quarforth.

“Motorola and NTELOS have enjoyed an excellent working relationship for several years. This major CDMA 1X system upgrade project will benefit NTELOS by significantly increasing voice capacity and it will make the network ready to introduce high-speed wireless Internet access capability for subscribers,” said Fred Wright, senior vice president and general manager of North America for Motorola’s Global Telecom Solutions Sector. “The network upgrade also provides the foundation for increased data speed enhancements that will evolve over the next few years,” said Wright.
