Motorola and SWANCC to Co-Sponsor Electronics Recycling Event on May 11, 2002

DES PLAINES, Ill, May 2, 2002 – Motorola and the Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County (SWANCC) are co-sponsoring a computer and electronics recycling event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 11, 2002, at Motorola’s Schaumburg Campus, 1301 E. Algonquin Road.

Only residentially generated equipment will be accepted at the collection site. Other arrangements for all equipment from businesses, school districts, government agencies or institutions will have to be made with a computer/electronics recycling contractor.

Equipment and products that will be accepted include: computers and peripherals (PCs, printers, monitors, tape drives, keyboards, etc.); personal home office equipment and products (telephones, answering machines, typewriters, pagers, cellular phones, etc.); small home appliances (toasters, blenders); entertainment and visual equipment (televisions, videocassette recorders, stereo equipment, cameras, video game players, etc.) and home improvement products such as power tools. Air conditioners, microwaves and large home appliances will not be accepted.

United Recycling Industries (URI), the contractor hired by Motorola and SWANCC, will transport the collected items to their West Chicago facility where components are broken down. Approximately 95 percent of the materials will be recycled. URI specializes in electronic products recycling, servicing corporate accounts nationwide.

“As people upgrade their equipment, more and more of these items are appearing in the trash. Valuable, hazardous and risk-free materials exist in this equipment, which can be reused, recovered and recycled,” said Mary Allen, SWANCC recycling director. “SWANCC-area residents are encouraged to take advantage of the one-day event and donate or recycle these items instead of sending them to the landfill,” said Allen.

Representatives from United Cerebral Palsy Association’s “Assistive Technology Exchange Network”, a not-for-profit organization, will be on site to accept working computers, 486’s with CD-ROM, Pentiums and Macs (Power Book and later). Also cellular phones and accessories from the collection will be donated to the “Call to Protect Program”. This program has donated more than 33,000 mobile phones and free airtime to aid 100,000 victims of domestic abuse since its inception in 2000.

Tax deduction receipts will only be issued if equipment is accepted by the not-for-profit organization for reuse.
