Motorola Announces Integration of Ashley Laurent BroadWay™ ISS into SURFboard® SBG1000 Wireless Cable Modem Gateway

Ashley Laurent integrating firewall, NAT, VPN, and content filtering software into Motorola wireless cable modem gateway

SAN ANTONIO, June 5, 2002 —Ashley Laurent, Inc. announced today that Motorola’s Broadband Communications Sector selected its BroadWay Integrated Services Software (ISS) for its new SURFboard® SBG1000 wireless cable modem gateway. Ashley Laurent’s BroadWay is a fully integrated software platform that provides stateful inspection firewall protection with Network Address Translation (NAT), IPSec virtual private networking (VPN), content filtering, and other value-added services.

The Motorola SBG1000 is the industry’s first combination high-speed cable modem router with 5-port Ethernet switch and wireless home gateway. A plug-and-play DOCSIS 1.1-based cable modem and gateway, the SBG1000 utilizes a 5-port, 10/100 Base-T switch, 802.11b wireless technology, and HPNA for home networking. An additional print server via a parallel port allows multiple users to more easily share a single printer for the entire network. The BroadWay ISS platform bolsters the Motorola SBG1000 with enhanced security protection and other integrated broadband network operator-managed applications. By offering these applications to their subscribers, operators can generate additional subscription-based services and increase customer retention and satisfaction. The Motorola SBG1000 enjoyed an enthusiastic reception when it was introduced at the National Cable and Telecommunications Association’s (NCTA) Cable 2002 (May 6-8).

"The SBG1000 wireless cable modem gateway with integrated BroadWay software creates new value-added service models that broadband network operators can offer cable customers to further expand and enhance the IP broadband experience.”

“Combining Motorola’s and Ashley Laurent’s technologies makes a lot of sense. "Broadband service providers are moving to a managed services model designed to give end-users access to advanced security and service features, and expand generate incremental revenue," said Michael Harris, president of research firm Kinetic Strategies. "By integrating these features into the access device, Motorola and Ashley Laurent are delivering on the next generation of broadband access and services."
