Motorola and CMCC Cooperate on 3G Research for China Market

CANNES, France 3GSM World Congress, Feb. 18, 2002 – Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC), China’s largest mobile phone network operator, today announced the signing of a cooperative agreement to begin a 3G business service dimensioning research project in China.

Under terms of the agreement, the two sides will jointly study possible services and their characteristics on China’s future 3G networks. The research is focused on finding the most cost-effective network solutions for the China market and will study the relationship between service behaviors and the related network resource consumption. The major areas of research include 3G applications, service behavior patterns and wireless network resource consumption.

“The development of 3G technology in China will have a significant impact on the economy and telecommunications industry in China,” said Ruey Bin Kao, Motorola Vice President and General Manager of Global Telecom Solutions Sector, China Operations. “Motorola is pleased to be involved, along with CMCC, in 3G business dimensioning research for the China market. The company is committed to long-term win-win cooperation with our Chinese partners and to developing the 3G technology, network and services that best suit the China market. Motorola is contributing to the development of China’s 3G mobile communications by sharing its experiences in wireless technologies and packet communications. We’re making things smarter and life better for people and the environments in which they live, work and play.”

Third Generation technology (3G) promises to bring about broadband multimedia services at peak data rates of 2 Mb/s and support high quality voice services, packet data services, multi-media transmission, and multi-user communications. The technology will dramatically change the way consumers and businesses communicate and enable people to stay connected with each other virtually wherever they are.
