Motorola Files Report with Consumer Product Safety Commission Concerning a Segment of DCT2000 Digital Set-Tops in Response to Power-Supply Component Notification

HORSHAM, Pa., June 7, 2002 — Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Broadband Communications Sector today announced that it has filed a report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) concerning a potential safety risk with DCT2000 interactive digital set-tops manufactured between late February and May, 2002.

Home installations for these potentially impacted DCT2000s would have taken place beginning March 1, 2002. Digital cable customers should continue to use the DCT2000 as normal. To avoid risk of potential shock, customers are urged not to attempt to remove the power cord from the rear of the box. Power cords should always be unplugged from the wall outlet or other energy source before being disengaged from the product.

To date, Motorola has received no reports of shock or injury as a result of this defect.

This report was filed in response to information received from power supply manufacturers that some of the power supplies used in some DCT2000s could contain a defective component, giving rise to a quality concern. Motorola’s subsequent investigation of the quality defect disclosed a potential shock hazard, which prompted Motorola to notify the CPSC and begin developing a plan to address this issue.

Motorola has stopped shipment of potentially affected units and is screening all DCT2000s in transit to operators. Motorola has also started to identify cable operator shipment locations that may have received affected product and is working with these operators to locate, identify and replace all defective power supplies. Motorola is working with the CPSC on a plan to address the power supply issue and will communicate that plan to its customers when all elements are in place.

Cable operators will be contacting customers directly to determine if their DCT2000 is affected by this component defect.
