Motorola Introduces Specialized Mobile Communications Solution For Firefighters

Fireground Communications System Delivers Improved Personnel Monitoring, Enhanced In-Building Coverage and Increased Incident Command Capabilities

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 23, 2002 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the introduction of the Fireground Communications System, a new mobile communications solution specifically designed for firefighters. The new system is being demonstrated here at the 2002 Fire-Rescue International Conference, Aug. 23-26, sponsored by the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

The Fireground Communications System is part of Motorola’s extensive portfolio of integrated communications and information solutions to address mission-critical public safety and security requirements worldwide.

“The Fireground Communications System will dramatically enhance the ability of incident commanders at the scene of a fire or other emergency situation to communicate with and monitor all on-scene emergency responders,” said Mike Worthington, Motorola Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Global Safety and Security Solutions. “This powerful, portable solution will deliver communications features not previously available. And with planned future enhancements like rescue/location tracking, it will provide a critical link to all public safety personnel at all times.”

The portable Fireground Communications System is designed for deployment at an incident scene. It consists of five central components: the XTS 5000™ portable radio, Incident Management Software, Ruggedized Command Terminal, Digital RF Modem and Portable Repeater. Together, these components provide improved on-scene and in-building radio coverage, and enhanced personnel accountability and monitoring. Future plans call for the Fireground Communications System to deliver rescue/location tracking and a wireless Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) feature.

Each Fireground Communications System radio automatically reports the user’s radio ID, which can be configured to display name, riding position and sector assignment on the commander’s mobile command terminal. If for any reason a user turns off the radio, the incident commander is automatically informed and can relay that information to the response team. If a critical situation arises with a firefighter, the firefighter can push an emergency button that activates an alarm on the incident management mobile command terminal. In addition, an integrated evacuation feature allows a commander to wirelessly transmit a signal to all radios on the scene alerting the presence of immediate danger.

“With better communications and monitoring capabilities, the Fireground Communications System will allow incident commanders to formulate and execute more effective on-site emergency response and resource management strategies,” said Worthington. “Most importantly, it is a significant step forward for fire departments’ efforts to help ensure greater firefighter safety.”

Motorola will roll out the Fireground Communications System in phases, starting in 2003 with features that improve on-scene and in-building communications coverage and personnel accountability. The second phase will include solutions for location tracking and a wireless SCBA.
