Motorola Ships 30,000th
Third Generation-Capable Base Station
ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Oct. 8, 2002 –
Motorola’s Global Telecom Solution Sector (GTSS) has shipped more than
30,000 Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) 2000 1X third generation (3G) base
stations.
“This is a great achievement
for Motorola, “ said Barbara Benko, senior director of GTSS’s
Wireless System Solutions Group. “Motorola’s SC™ series of
1X-ready base stations are truly scaleable, which can provide a wireless
operator greater expansion flexibility within its network, whether it is with
the channels, carriers, or base stations,” said
Benko.
CDMA2000 1X technology nearly doubles
the voice capacity on the network and is capable of transmitting data at a peak
rate of up to 153 kilobits per second. Motorola has CDMA2000 1X contracts with
12 wireless operators worldwide.
Japan’s KDDI, whose 1X radio access network is 100
percent supplied by Motorola, has more than 2.65 million subscribers in the
first six months of offering 3G CDMA2000 1X voice and data services.
“KDDI’s success is an example of
how Motorola is helping to accelerate the mobile data services market by
offering services that stimulate demand, optimize network performance to
maximize the return on operators’ current investments, and minimize the
risks of moving to 3G through well-calculated investments in next generation
networks,” said Benko.
Motorola, a worldwide leader in the
development of CDMA and high-speed data networks, deployed the first commercial
CDMA system in the world in Hong Kong in 1995 and has successfully deployed
nationwide IS95-B high-speed packet data networks in Japan, Korea, Israel, Hong
Kong, Malaysia and Peru.
The SC™ base transceiver station products
support the world’s most advanced digital standards, provide high voice
and data capacity and support both second generation (2G) and 3G CDMA
standards.
