Convergence™ Platform to Drive Development of J2ME™-based
DevicesJava™ Developers
Tap Into Broad Market for Enhanced
ApplicationsAUSTIN, Texas - June 3, 2003 -
Java developers targeting a broad market of global handset manufacturers can
soon take advantage of the enriched capabilities of Motorola's i.JV30, the
latest embedded Java virtual machine from Motorola's (NYSE:MOT) Semiconductor
Products Sector. The i.JV30, integrated with its Innovative Convergence
platforms for 2.5G devices, will be demonstrated next week during the JavaOne
Conference in San Francisco.
A market leader in
the application of Java platform 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) technology, Motorola's
proven solutions are shipping in millions of mobile devices today. i.JV30 is
Motorola's next-generation implementation of J2ME and features the latest Java
application program interfaces (APIs) including the Mobile Information Device
Profile (MIDP) 2.0, Connected Limited Device Configuration (CLDC) 1.0, Wireless
Messaging APIs (JSR-120) and the Mobile Media APIs
(JSR-135).
By providing a comprehensive,
highly-integrated J2ME software and hardware solution designed to speed their
time to market, the Innovative Convergence platform will greatly accelerate
adoption of the Java MIDP 2.0 global standard by handset providers worldwide.
The MIDP 2.0 standard enables developers to take advantage of advances in
application development for graphics, new and enhanced gaming, audio, end-to-end
security, and other features optimized for the mobile device
market.
i.JV30 is designed for the industry's
three-million-plus developers who use Java technology, and supports a rapidly
growing market for the development of applications and services for new handheld
multimedia devices, smartphones and mobile entertainment products. i.JV30 is
integrated with Motorola's i.250 Innovative Convergence platforms, which have
been adopted by leading designers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) of
mobile devices around the world.
"The expansion
of J2ME technology fuels success for manufacturers and developers," said
Anne-Marie Larkin, vice president and director of Motorola's Wireless Software,
Applications and Services Division. "Motorola's i.JV30 solution is designed to
minimize an OEM's time to market by providing a comprehensive software platform
that is fully optimized for Java and eases the support of compelling
applications and content."
"With i.JV30, we are
pleased to see Motorola leverage their experience as the specification leader
for the Mobile Information Device Profile (MIDP 2.0) and a leading supplier to
make it easier and faster to deploy more capable handsets" said Juan Dewar,
Senior Director, CMSG, SUN Microsystems. "Motorola's commitment to Java
technology and the evolution of mobile devices will help accelerate the
development of exciting and differentiated J2ME services and applications."
With i.JV30, application developers can use
development tools such as Metrowerks' CodeWarrior™ Wireless Studio version
7, as well as Sun's J2ME Wireless Toolkit. CodeWarrior Wireless Studio 7, is a
development tool for creating world-class applications targeting the J2ME
enabled devices. Sun's J2ME Wireless Toolkit is a set of tools providing
application developers with the emulation environments, documentation and
examples needed to develop Java technology-based applications targeted at
CLDC/MIDP compliant mobile phones and entry level personal digital assistants
(PDAs).
