Siemens VDO Automotive Selects Motorola's
mobileGT™ Platform for Future Navigation Systems
MPC5200’s Small Package
Combines 760 MIPS and Generous I/O at Under One
WattAUSTIN, Texas - Sept. 30, 2003 -
Motorola Inc.'s (NYSE: MOT) Semiconductor Product Sector (SPS) today announced
that Siemens VDO Automotive AG will use Motorola's MPC5200 embedded processor in
its next-generation navigation systems.
Siemens VDO Automotive, a major global
automotive supplier, made this choice in response to its customers' and overall
market demands for higher performance and more value-based telematics
systems.
Motorola's MPC5200 is helping enable
the transition with a combination of a small package, low-power, 760 MIPS and a
wide range of peripherals such as Controller Area Network (CAN), Peripheral
Component Interconnect (PCI), and Double Data Rate (DDR) SDRAM support. This
combination will help Siemens VDO Automotive greatly reduce the number of extra
components and simplify the system design and integration of new services and
future multimedia applications.
"The MPC5200
is the first controller with the right amount of MIPS for advanced navigation
applications," said Uwe Schumacher, program manager at Siemens VDO Automotive.
"Its flexibility and high-performance interfaces allow us to continue providing
best-in-class navigation systems while reducing time to market."
MPC5200 Extends Motorola's Telematics
Market ShareThe rapid pace of change in driver
information systems is putting pressure on designers of telematics
communications units (TCUs), driver information systems and hands-free phone
modules to bring compelling features to market faster.
Industry analyst firm, Telematics Research
Group (TRG), projects that 80 to 85 million cars on the road worldwide in 2010
will contain telematics systems, and Motorola leads the market by far. This
technology leadership, coupled with the product innovation of the MPC5200, gives
Siemens' designers a jumpstart on system design.
Motorola's mobileGT Platform
Based on the MPC5200, the mobileGT™
platform is now in its second generation. As a well-refined hardware and
software architecture for automotive applications, it is a logical choice for
developers of telematics. The mobileGT Alliance consists of key vendors in the
telematics industry that deliver integrated operating system and application
support for the mobileGT platform. The mobileGT platform helps manufacturers
take a common development approach while providing product differentiation
through tailored applications and system integration.
This ready-to-go combination of hardware and
software technologies allows Siemens VDO Automotive to leverage existing
best-in-class technologies to rapidly develop applications based on the stable
and mature mobileGT development
platform.
The MPC5200 offers the following
features:- High performance of 760 MIPS at 400
MHz with Floating Point Unit (FPU)
- Low power
consumption (less than one watt)
- Generous
I/O, including Ethernet, USB, CAN, J1850, PCI, ATA, I2S, I2C, SPI and multiple
UARTs
- An integrated DDR memory controller
that accelerates data access with an effective memory bus speed of 266
MHz
- An integrated BestComm DMA controller
that offloads the PowerPC® processor core from I/O intensive data
transfers
- Minus 40 to 85 degrees Celsius
extended temperature qualification
- Long-term
availability due to automotive market
applicability
