Motorola and Movaz Announce Partnership to Optimize the Transport of Multiservice-Wavelengths in Metro and Regional Optical Networks

The Movaz Networks RAY™ product suite to be incorporated as the Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) component of Motorola’s end-to-end network infrastructure solutions

LAS VEGAS – 13 Oct. 2003 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) Broadband Communications Sector has announced a strategic relationship with Movaz Networks, an established optical networking solutions supplier, to provide DWDM transport and optical service delivery solutions for telecom and broadband cable network operators. Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola will market Movaz’s RAY product suite as the Motorola Multi-service Wavelength Transport (MWT) family of products to Motorola’s customers worldwide. The announcement was made at the USTA TELECOM '03 annual conference and exhibition, where Motorola is exhibiting in booth #618.

The Motorola MWT platform consists of a multitude of high-density Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer (OADM) configurations that can scale from a single wavelength to 40 wavelengths of unrestricted 2.5Gbps and 10 Gbps services as well as a family of optical amplifiers that can support long-reach all-optical transport.

The MWT product portfolio is unique to the industry as it cohesively integrates the following functions:

Cost-effective and scalable access, metro, and regional DWDM optical transport to provide high-bandwidth services for linear, star and ring topologies, Intelligent wavelength management software for end-to-end connections management, efficient resource management, expedited provisioning and simplified network operations, and Distributed wavelength cross-connect functionality built into optical network elements.

With the combined transport and switching architecture, wavelengths can be reconfigured dynamically to meet service demands. Further facilitated by embedded GMPLS intelligence, resources are “auto-discovered,” signaling and control required for end-to-end provisioning are seamlessly executed, and protection is made more robust through system-wide path computation analysis.

Motorola and Movaz also plan to collaborate on joint development activities to further expand the MWT portfolio.

Integrated within Motorola’s industry-leading portfolio of multi-service transport solutions including the Multiservice Broadband Transport (MBT) platform, the MWT enables telecom and cable operators to converge today’s metro network to an advanced optical network that supports the integrated transport and delivery of services such as voice telephony, high-speed Internet/data access, and video on demand (VOD). The MBT platform complements the MWT by unifying intelligent optical transport with multi-service aggregation and switching to support the economical and efficient provisioning of a wide array of high-bandwidth services.

“We’ve been impressed with the market position that Movaz has established with both telecom and broadband cable operators, and, after a thorough evaluation, decided that the RAY product line would be the best fit for meeting the metro and regional DWDM requirements of our customers,” said Charles Dougherty, vice president and general manager of Motorola’s network infrastructure solutions business. “This platform enables operators to efficiently utilize their network capacity for the integrated transport of multiple services and scale their system to meet growing bandwidth demands. Motorola is extremely pleased to enter into this strategic relationship.”

“Movaz has built an optical product portfolio that meets both the most stringent carrier-class requirements, and the aggressive cost points needed for cable applications,” said Bijan Khosravi, Chairman and CEO, Movaz Networks. “The unique combination of these two qualities along with the inherent product architecture for seamless convergence of IP, voice and video service transport, has enabled Movaz to establish a solid footprint of nearly a thousand nodes globally. This strategic relationship between Movaz and Motorola builds not only on the product and technology strengths of Movaz, but also on Motorola’s customer reach and channel development expertise, to jointly provide a truly industry-leading solution for next-generation optical transport.”
