Opera and Motorola Global Software Group
Sign Joint Product Offering and Distribution
Agreement
OSLO, Norway and SCHAUMBURG,
Ill. – 6 February 2004 – Opera Software ASA and Motorola,
Inc.’s (NYSE:MOT) Global Software Group (GSG) today announced that they
have entered into an agreement to deliver a joint product offering consisting of
Opera’s “full” HTML browser software and the WAP stack from
GSG’s browser software, creating one-stop shopping for cellular phone
browsers.
Opera’s full HTML browser
provides desktop functionality on a cellular phone. The combination with
GSG’s WAP stack allows the Opera browser to work in the WAP environment.
This joint product offering gives operators the benefit of their existing
investment in current WAP infrastructure, and at the same time the benefit of an
HTML browser. The product offering is designed to work on operators’
existing WAP infrastructure while enabling the revenue-driving HTML content that
is now basic to the embedded devices marketplace. Opera and GSG will each
license the combined product offering to operators. Opera will also license
Motorola’s WAP Browser and MMS device client to customers as individual
products.
“We are set to propel mobile
browsing into the full Internet,” says Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera
Software ASA. “Today’s agreement allows Opera to let operators and
handset manufacturers gain revenue from past investments in WAP technology while
embracing the numerous possibilities in what is new to mobile
browsing.”
“We are pleased that
together we can bring to market a cellular phone browser product that provides
full HTML Internet access in a WAP environment,” says Amreesh Modi, vice
president, systems solutions and products division, at Motorola GSG. “Now
we can meet the needs of high-end, high-functionality, smart phone users, as
well as voice-centric phones
users.”
