Motorola Inaugurates 3G Research &
Development Centre in
Singapore
Centre to Develop and
Design 3G Handsets for Regional and Global
Markets
SINGAPORE, 19 November 2004
– Motorola announced today the inauguration of its 3G R&D Center in
Singapore. The Center will focus on the design and development of 3G handsets
for regional and global markets. It will be one of the few 3G R&D centers
globally that is dedicated to the development of 3G handsets for Motorola, and
the only one in Asia outside of Japan.
The
center will have a research and development team located in Singapore of over 60
research engineers and design talents engaged in mechanical and electrical
engineering, and software development. In line with the strategic partnership
between the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) and Motorola, an initial
batch of 28 engineers will be sent to Motorola’s 3G R&D center in the
US for advanced training.
The 3G R&D
Center is a significant part of Motorola’s efforts to make Singapore a
strategic hub for higher value-add activities and put Singapore at the forefront
of 3G technology and innovation. Singapore is already the main site for the
manufacturing of Motorola 3G handsets globally. Bill Werner, Senior Vice
President and General Manager of Motorola’s Personal Communications Sector
for 3G, commented: ”Singapore plays a significant role in our global 3G
development. The manufacturing center in Singapore currently manufactures 60 per
cent of Motorola’s global output of 3G phones. With the addition of the 3G
R&D Center, Motorola Singapore completes the 3G value chain of design,
development and manufacturing on the 3G
front.”
Motorola Singapore will be the
first Motorola facility worldwide to have the full value chain of activities in
a single location. The new center will be a boost to Motorola’s R&D
resources in 3G and will strengthen the whole value chain of moving ideas from
the lab to the marketplace quickly and effectively for next-generation
devices.
"Motorola and Singapore's long
partnership is further strengthened today with this 3G R&D centre. We
welcome Motorola's increased presence here and its contribution towards making
Singapore the leading mobility hub in Asia-Pacific," said Mr Teo Ming Kian,
Chairman of EDB. "Motorola's continued commitment to Singapore is a vote of
confidence in our R&D capabilities, design talents, and the ability of our
manufacturing sector to provide competitive products to the
world."
“The 3G R&D Centre reflects
Motorola’s underlying philosophy that innovative design and development
fuels our product offerings,” said Jeffery Tan, President of Motorola
Singapore. “R&D has always been the key engine behind our growth since
Motorola was established in Singapore some 30 years ago. We will continue to
turn creative ideas into commercial reality and provide the marketplace with
compelling and differentiating products and services. We intend to continue our
strategic partnership with Singapore to drive more exciting
developments.”
Singapore offers the ideal
location for the 3G R&D Center given its strong talent pool and swift
technology adoption rate. In addition to excellent infrastructure and strong
fundamentals, Singapore provides a conducive environment for test-bedding new
technologies, features and applications. The country’s strong emphasis on
developing human capital also ensures that Motorola is able to tap on the
existing talent pool as well as train new resources on advanced technology
know-how, as for its 3G R&D
Center.
