Motorola Launches New Cable Products Bringing Broadband Voice and Digital Video Services to Wider Areas
New Motorola transmission products deliver feature rich services cost-effectively over existing infrastructure
KOLN, Germany -- 30 May 2005 -- Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced the availability of two new transmitter modules for the OmniStar® GX2 platform. These additions will allow cable operators to extend available network bandwidth and offer customers advanced broadband services such as Video-on-Demand (VOD) and Voice-over-IP (VoIP) without the need for further investment in fibre. The two new modules are the Motorola GX2-DM870 Narrowcast Transmitter and the Motorola GX2-DM200 Return-Path Transmitter.
The Motorola OmniStar GX2-DM870 Narrowcast Transmitter provides both new and existing GX2 based networks with the ability to offer broader programming options and feature rich services with no additional infrastructure investment. The provisioning occurs at the headend for greater cost efficiencies and the same bandwidth is re-used for targeted services, effectively expanding the capacity of the network. This enhancement will allow operators to offer consumers seamless connections to information and entertainment while creating revenue-generating opportunities for operators.
The Motorola OmniStar GX2-DM200 Return-Path Transmitter provides a fibre efficient way to transport return path traffic from a hub to a headend enabling operators to deploy a scalable, low cost return network capable of supporting residential high-speed data (HSD) and VoIP services.
“Motorola’s 50 years of proven expertise in developing innovative broadband solutions allows us to help operators provide revenue generating services at a low cost,” said Charles Dougherty, corporate vice president, Motorola Connected Home Solutions business. “With these two new products, broadband operators can now offer a broader breadth of services - from standard broadband connectivity to comprehensive, feature packed ‘connected home’ applications that enrich people’s entertainment and communications experiences.”
About the OmniStar GX2-DM870 DWDM Narrowcast Transmitter Module The OmniStar GX2-DM870B Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) narrowcast transmitter is designed for targeted services delivery. It uses a high performance, directly modulated, DFB laser that enables transmission over links up to 100 km. Combined with Motorola's optical amplifiers, multiplexers and demultiplexers, operators can deploy a scalable, low cost, future-proof DWDM targeted services network. With 40 ITU wavelengths available, it can be utilised to provide up to forty times greater capacity across one optical fibre (compared to one wavelength over a single fibre), enabling wider choice of programs for consumers.
About the OmniStar GX2-DM200 Return-Path Transmitter Module The OmniStar GX2-DM200 Return-Path Transmitter transports analogue return-path signals from 5 MHz to 200 MHz. It is also available in 40 ITU wavelengths so DWDM techniques can provide operators with large return signal capacity over a single fibre. About the Motorola OmniStar GX2 Platform Motorola’s OmniStar GX2 is deployed with 30 operators across 12 countries in EMEA. It is a high-density, universal optical platform that supports advanced HFC networks. It minimising headend space utilisation and lowers equipment costs; it accepts 16 plug-n-play application modules in a 4 RU chassis. The GX2-HSG-LITE mini-chassis provides a space saving and cost effective solution for remote locations, while still utilising the same GX2 application modules. Any system architecture can be accommodated the full complement of OmniStar GX2 application modules: 1310nm and 1550nm Broadcast Transmitters, DWDM Narrowcast Transmitters, Analog and Digital Return-Path Receivers, Optical Switches, and RF Switches. The GX2’s user-friendly design features include front-panel hot-swappable application modules that maximise in-service time, new Quick Swap capability, as well as electronic birth certifications. The platform can be monitored and controlled locally through a Web browser interface or through a network management system using Ethernet-based SNMP.
