Motorola Converged Optical Access Platform Accelerates Delivery of New Broadband Services over Fiber Networks

Platform supports multiple architectures and simultaneous service delivery to increase options, ease deployment and drive competitive advantage

SUPERCOMM 2005, Chicago – Jun. 7, 2005 – Motorola Inc. (NYSE: MOT) today announced expansion of its leading portfolio of multi-service broadband access products with the Motorola AXS2200 Optical Line Terminal (OLT) which supports converged service delivery over Fiber-to-the Premises (FTTP) and Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN) user networks. The AXS2200 brings great versatility to carriers who are managing the complexities of upgrading current telecom architectures to meet the demands for broadband communications and entertainment services such as IPTV, optical-fast Internet and VoIP.

Carriers of all sizes are competing for consumers by deploying new services and by extending their reach for last-mile broadband coverage. Motorola’s converged FTTP and FTTN solutions enable carriers to easily upgrade current telecom infrastructures to deliver the bandwidth necessary to support complex and data-rich applications, while enhancing their competitive position.

“Carrier interest in bundled triple-play solutions is exploding. The AXS2200 gives carriers a clear and cost -effective path to enhance their access infrastructure to enable converged service delivery,” said Adrian Nemcek, executive vice president, Motorola, and president of Motorola Networks. “It also allows carriers to plot the course toward seamless mobility delivering voice, video and data when and where customers want it.”

Under a recently announced contract, Motorola is providing Verizon with the AXS2200 and a complete family of Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) to help build out its FTTP network infrastructure. The Motorola AXS2200 supports simultaneous delivery of services over both BPON (Broadband Passive Optical Network, i.e. ITU G.983) and GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network, i.e. ITU G.984) standard optical access architectures. With this unique system design, carriers now have a choice to select or migrate to the PON delivery architecture they need to deploy profitable advanced services.

Delivering the highest PON density in the industry, the AXS2200 provides voice, data and video service aggregation via integrated TDM voice gateway, ATM and GigE network interfaces. The AXS2200 also features both FTTP (BPON and GPON) and FTTN service delivery architectures. Further versatility is provided through both in-band IPTV and RF video overlay combinations. Together, these capabilities make the AXS2200 a flexible and cost-effective access solution for carriers looking to deploy residential and business services that can scale from thousands to millions of subscribers.

Managed by the AXSvision element and network management platform, Motorola’s optical access solution provides comprehensive system management designed to support flow-through provisioning via seamless integration into embedded Network Management Systems (NMS) and Operational Support Systems (OSS). Additionally, Motorola’s full line of intelligent ONTs deliver a broad range of advanced services including Class 5 or Softswitch-enabled voice or VoIP to residential customers, both in single family homes and multi-dwelling units, and to business customers.

The AXS2200 portfolio of carrier-class and standards compliant optical access products weaves seamlessly into Motorola’s end-to-end portfolio of video infrastructure, IP and RF set-top boxes, and content security solutions. Motorola also maintains a state-of-the-art third-party development and interoperability program enabling rapid integration of third-party hardware (e.g., ONTs) and applications software solutions into Motorola’s next generation services delivery platform.

Editor’s Note:
Motorola offers a full portfolio of IPTV solutions over fiber and copper technologies, enabling Fiber-to-the-Node (FTTN) and Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) solutions for both residential and business applications.
