Motorola Selected to Optimize Maxis’ Broadband Data Networks in Malaysia
Motorola’s Data Optimization Service accelerates data rates up to 10 times; enables end users to achieve speedier mobile data downloads
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. – 26 July 2005 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) announced today that its Malaysia subsidiary, Motorola Electronics Sdn Bhd, has been awarded a contract to optimize the existing 2.5 and 3G data networks of Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd (Maxis).
Motorola’s Network Optimization Service is already available on Maxis 3G networks, and is expected to be commercially deployed on the operator’s 2.5G networks by Q4 2005. By then, Maxis’ data subscribers can look forward to improved mobile data experience, such as faster Web browsing and speedier downloads of multimedia content.
Motorola’s suite of network optimization solutions and services will enable operators to leverage their existing investment in data networks to boost revenue opportunities from mobile data services. Through the use of enhanced data reduction techniques and protocol acceleration algorithms, the Motorola solution greatly reduces download times to provide enhanced user experience promoting increased data usage. This in turn will benefit operators as it will enable them to attract and retain new users, gain greater market share and reduce churn. In addition, by achieving more efficient use of their existing infrastructure, network operators can help increase subscriber capacity, reduce capital expenditure and network operating costs.
This agreement with Maxis further strengthens Motorola’s leading network position and commitment in the market. Motorola first started installing Maxis’ GSM system 10 years ago, and in 2001 installed its GPRS wireless data network. Maxis currently has a total of approximately 6.5 million customers with a rising trend in data wireless subscribers.
“Today’s mobile users are rapidly moving towards a converged lifestyle where the mobile phone is no longer treated as a means to place voice calls only. We are now seeing more users turning to their mobile phones for data-intensive usage such as Web surfing and sharing multimedia content with friends,” said Maxis’ Head of Product Development and Management, Karim Abdul Malik. “With Motorola’s network optimization solutions, we can now enhance the attractiveness and usability of mobile data services to our customers.”
“As Maxis’ trusted long-term telecom supplier, we will continue to bring value to the relationship by helping Maxis meet its business objectives of delivering superior mobile experience to its subscribers, as well as speeding the adoption of advanced mobile data services among subscribers in the country,” said Jay Andersen, vice president, Sales and Operations for Motorola Networks, Asia.
