Metrowerks Delivers
Comprehensive CodeWarrior Tools For
Second Generation
Motorola DSP56800E Processors
Toolsets Include Hardware, Software, SDK,
Host-Target Interface, Instruction Set Simulator; Provide Optimized Code
Generation, Fast Time-To-Market
AUSTIN,
Texas -- January 9, 2002 -- New generations of applications for automotive,
communications, consumer electronics, office automation, robotics and motor
control systems can now be built with CodeWarrior tools from Metrowerks, a
Motorola company (NYSE:MOT), to run on the latest Motorola Digital Signal
Processors (DSP) and Microcontroller Units
(MCU).
The new hardware and software
development tools, CodeWarrior(R) for DSP56800E(R), Version 1.0, provide
developers a complete Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and tool set for
targeting the new 56800E family of DSP/MCU hybrid controllers. Motorola
announced the availability of the 56800E family on December
3rd.
"The automotive and communications
markets, in particular, are demanding more and more processing power, and the
DSP56800E has the right combination of MCU and DSP features to satisfy this
demand," said John Smolucha, vice president of marketing, Metrowerks.
"CodeWarrior for DSP56800E is exactly the tool developers need to more rapidly
create embedded applications and take advantage of the advanced technology found
in this new family of hybrid
controllers.”
CodeWarrior for 56800E is a
turnkey hardware and software development solution that includes a multi-target
project manager, enhanced compiler, assembler, and debugger that support the
entire portfolio of 56800E hybrid
controllers.
"CodeWarrior for 56800E integrated
development tools provide a comprehensive and powerful platform for software
developers," said Debbie Drysdale, vice president and general manager of
Motorola's DSP Standard Products Division. "These tools build on the success of
the CodeWarrior for DSP56800 and are well suited for our 56800E DSP/MCU hybrid
core devices."
Beyond the tool set and IDE,
CodeWarrior for DSP56800E contains a comprehensive collection of development
technologies specifically designed for the 56800E family DSP/MCU hybrid
controllers.
High Code Density and
Performance Historically, design engineers have
addressed the challenges of adding control functions and processing power to
systems by dividing the system tasks between multiple chips or even
multiple-core solutions. Motorola was the first semiconductor manufacturer in
the industry to integrate into a single core the performance of a traditional
DSP with the control functionality of an MCU with its 56800
family.
The compiler in CodeWarrior for
DSP56800E allows developers to adhere to a high control code density, which
means faster and more efficient code execution and lower cost. It provides
competitive performance in optimized code generation with the smallest memory
usage of the market. The debugger includes enhanced support with processor
simulation and user-configurable register windows that allow users to browse
registers without having to learn their detailed bit
functions.
CodeWarrior Host-Target
Interface
The ability to interact with a running target is a
critical requirement for DSP application development. To observe and understand
application behavior under real-world conditions, developers need a new
generation of host-target interface technology. CodeWarrior Host-Target
Interface (HTI), available in Q3 2002, provides a high performance,
Ethernet-based solution optimized for the DSP56800E architecture. It enables
data transfer between the host computer and the on-chip emulation module of a
56800E processor with minimal intrusion, eliminating the slow download times and
run control problems commonly associated with JTAG-based, run-control
connections. Using CodeWarrior Host-Target Interface, developers are able to
dramatically shorten the edit/compile/download and debug cycles associated with
creating complex DSP software.
Instruction Set
Simulator
The CodeWarrior tools offer a fully functional simulated
DSP56800E-target environment for loading, executing and debugging applications.
The Instruction Set Simulator allows developers to access memory, set
breakpoints, and single step through code. The simulator provides a variety of
high performance features including complete instruction-set simulation of the
DSP56800E core, tracking of cycles and simulated instructions, access to
registers and memory with display in various formats, and Host I/O support to
provide data input and output interface to the
application.
The simulator can be used to
quickly and accurately model a variety of design parameters that often drive
cost versus performance decisions. With CodeWarrior, the software team can get
started developing production level code well ahead of hardware
availability.
SDK Integration
The CodeWarrior tools are completely integrated with an
embedded Software Development Kit (SDK) that includes an expanding re-usable set
of peripheral software, and application-specific software, such as voice coders,
voice recognition, MP3 decoders, full-duplex speaker phone, among others –
for Internet access devices. Designed to enable customers to reduce development
time and cost, the SDK contains production-quality drivers and algorithms for
the entire 56800E family of DSP controllers.
Multi-Target
Support
The powerful project manager included in CodeWarrior for
DSP56800E lets developers manipulate a single set of files for different
targets. For example, a developer could perform a simulation of the application
while several hardware debugging sessions are running, and all targets would be
kept up to date without impacting the files that customize the different target
environments.
RTOS
Support CodeWarrior for DSP56800E has a
built-in API to interface with various real-time operating systems (RTOS).
Several independent RTOS vendors are actively porting their operating systems to
the new DSP56800E family. Support for the OSEK operating system will be
available in Q2 2002.
