Motorola and Cox Communications San Diego
Team to Enhance Student Learning with Wireless Broadband Technology
Motorola Broadband and Cox
Communications San Diego leverage wireless technology to create an
“anywhere-anytime” learning environment for Lemon Grove (Calif.)
School District HORSHAM, Pa. – 20
October 2003 – Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) Broadband Communications Sector
and Cox Communications’ San Diego cable system have partnered with the
Lemon Grove (Calif.) School District to introduce an innovative educational
pilot program. Both companies are working in partnership to deploy
Motorola
SBG1000 wireless cable modem gateways in students’ homes via
Cox’s broadband network. Students and teachers in the district are
redefining traditional instructional models and creating a flexible,
technology-driven learning environment. As part of the
One-to-One@School and
Home program, the Lemon Grove School District is discovering the educational
impact of broadband and wireless technology.
The Motorola SBG1000 includes a cable modem,
an Ethernet router, a wireless access point, a print server, and an advanced
firewall. This technology connects Lemon Grove students, teachers and disparate
district resources through a virtual private network. Users can tap in from
school, multiple community access points, or home.
Through the
One-to-One @School and Home
program, two Lemon Grove sixth-grade classes and a team of three teachers are
all provided with wireless thin-client tablets running
Microsoft® Windows®
CE .NET, and linked to the community’s extensive broadband network via
Motorola SBG1000 wireless cable modem gateways. These gateways installed in
student homes provide a seamless networked environment reaching out to
classrooms and all city government facilities. This sophisticated network
provides students with access, via a virtual private network, to the
district’s vast resources, and also to the programs and files used every
day in the classroom. On the home front, the Motorola SBG1000 units provide
parents with access to data regarding homework assignments, students’
grades, teacher notes, and other valuable information.
"This project truly is a harbinger of how
technology can revolutionize the traditional classroom learning
environment," noted Todd Gutschow, chairman, Classroom of the Future
Foundation. "Like students in many similar communities, the majority of
Lemon Grove students do not have ready access to computers or the
Internet. With the collaborative efforts of the Classroom of the Future
Foundation, educators, and corporate partners/technology leaders such as
Motorola and Cox Communications, we were able not only to provide access,
but to create a new network of resources that challenge and excite our
students every day."
“Education and
youths are always at the forefront of our community outreach,” said Bill
Geppert, Vice President and General Manager of Cox Communications San Diego.
“Cox Communications is proud to team with Motorola to implement the
wireless technology that extends the walls of the classroom for Lemon Grove
students and helps bridge the digital
divide.”
“The LemonLINK program is a concrete example
of how broadband technology can expand and enhance educational opportunities in
our schools,” said
Carl McGrath,
Motorola vice president and general manager, digital core gateways. “Not
only does this project provide ‘anytime-anywhere’ access for the
students, it also works to get parents involved in their children’s
education by opening a window to school materials online at home. We are proud
to partner with Cox Communications to provide the wireless technology that
enables such a groundbreaking
initiative.”
About the Motorola
SBG1000The Motorola SBG1000 marked the
industry’s first wireless cable modem gateway. The product combines two of
Motorola’s inherent strengths – its worldwide leadership in wireless
communications and its technology expertise in the broadband business. The
Motorola SBG1000 replaces the need for an individual cable modem, router and
wireless access point by combining all this functionality in a single product
– saving consumers from the cost of purchasing these multiple devices and
from the headache of integrating them. The SBG family, including the SBG900,
offers added unique benefits such as content filtering, advanced firewall
protection, and virtual private networking
(VPN).
