Motorola SURFboard® SB5100 Cable Modem Makes History, Receiving DOCSIS™ 2.0 and DOCSIS 1.1 Certifications in Cert Wave 24

Over the past several years, Motorola has made strategic moves to advance IP technology development and deployment – heavily investing its resources, forming new partnerships, and developing innovative products that help operators better support their growing networks.

The new Motorola SURFboard® SB5100 cable modem exemplifies Motorola’s commitment to driving new IP communication gateway advancements that will further drive broadband advancements and opportunities.

“Receiving DOCSIS™ 2.0 certification today for the new Motorola SB5100 further affirms Motorola’s ongoing commitment to providing broadband technology that is both innovative and interoperable,” said John Burke corporate vice president and general manager of Motorola’s IP communication gateway business. “This powerful combination of innovation and interoperability is a key part of the Motorola heritage and a strong factor in our successes and those of our operator customers. The Motorola SB5100 DOCSIS™ 2.0 cable modem utilizes the latest technologies and standards to enable operators to get more mileage and flexibility out of their networks and deliver the latest interactive services to their subscribers.”

The Motorola SB5100

Motorola incorporated DOCSIS 2.0 Advanced Time Division Multiple Access (A-TDMA) and Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (S-CDMA) technologies into the Motorola SB5100, which can triple the upstream capacity (30Mbps) and will enable operators to offer new interactive services to their cable modem customers. These technologies also enhance the robustness of the cable modem for added functionality.

The Motorola SB5100 is interoperable and backward-compatible with DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1, giving operators the freedom and flexibility to incrementally upgrade their systems to a DOCSIS 2.0-based solution. This also enables operators to support multiple levels of DOCSIS and services today in their current systems, with one cable modem.

In addition to offering the latest technology innovations, the Motorola SB5100 boasts a new design that is both highly functional and consumer-friendly. Twenty-five percent more compact than its predecessors, the Motorola SB5100’s efficient size frees up even more valuable desktop space for its users. Its modern shape, complete with sleek curves and sharp color, also makes it an attractive product for consumers to have in their homes.

The Motorola SB5100 is currently undergoing evaluation by several operators, and Motorola expects shipments to begin before the end of this year.
