Safety programs: Performance, training and goals
We reduced our global recordable injury and illness case rate from 0.39 in 2005 to 0.20 in 2008, a 49 percent reduction.
This reflects the success of proactive programs including: employee involvement, training, awareness and management commitment.
Our sites are fitted with the latest first aid equipment. In 2008, an employee was resuscitated using a defibrillator after suffering a heart attack.
These actions have also contributed to the reduction of ergonomic injuries, and reduced ergonomic assessment cycle time. In 2008, we reduced ergonomic injuries by 20 percent compared to 2007.

Training and awareness
In 2008:
We created more than 39 new online Environment, Health and Safety courses for eight countries in five different languages reaching thousands of employees. We initiated a tower-climbing safety program to ensure all Motorola Network Deployment employees and contractors involved in network installation are properly trained and qualified. Our Tianjin site held a Safety Olympic Games in June 2008, as part of China's national safety month. This was designed to link sports games to operation safety knowledge and skills, such as chemical transportation, personal protective equipment, ergonomics and forklift operation. We conducted an online quiz to highlight the importance of emergency awareness. We used online electronic newsletters, our internal TV network, and employee awareness events to promote safe and healthy working.
