Operations: Case studies
Environmental excellence in India
In 2008, our new manufacturing site in India achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification. LEED is an international standard that recognizes environmental excellence in buildings. This is the first factory in India to receive LEED certification.
Our Sriperumbudur site, near Chennai, achieved the LEED silver rating certification after being assessed by the Indian Green Building Council for environmental performance in design, construction and operation. The council recognized achievement in the following areas:
Water
A rain water harvesting system that can collect 10 million liters of water and recharges it to the underground water table which helps maintain the local aquifer
A system to reuse treated water from the sewage treatment plant for toilets and to water the plants, reducing demand from the municipal supply
Energy
Energy-efficient heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system designed to achieve 30 percent more ventilation
Awareness campaigns to encourage employees to save energy
Materials selection and waste management
Glass, ceramic floor tiles and carpets contain more than 5 percent recycled content
Around 78 percent of the project construction waste was diverted from the landfill
Landscaping A 120,000 square feet green space planted around the site
Indoor environmental quality Indoor and outdoor air quality management, natural light and external views. Low VOC emitting adhesives and sealants were used in construction.
"Motorola has consistently demonstrated a strong commitment to conserving energy and protecting the environment. The company's Sriperumbudur facility is the first manufacturing plant in India to receive this recognition. We hope others will follow the example" says Dr. Prem C. Jain, chairman, Indian Green Building Council.
