Operations: Management system

We operate a rigorous Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) management system that reduces our impacts and implements our EHS policy.

The company-wide system enables us to manage potential risks to people and the environment, improve our performance and monitor compliance with our policies and with regulations around the world.

Our global EHS management system is certified to the international standards ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. This covers all of our manufacturing sites and our larger facilities. Sites are classified according to floorspace, headcount, type of operation and risk using a calculation tool. Sites with the higher scores are classified as Class I sites and are Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance (LRQA) certified to ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001:

Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance Certificate of Approval: ISO 14001:2004LRQA Certificate of Approval for ISO 14001:2004

Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance Certificate of Approval: OHSAS 18001:2007LRQA Certificate of Approval for OHSAS 18001:2007

Oversight of our EHS management system is provided by our vice president of EHS. Our EHS professionals around the world implement programs at site level to comply with the EHS management system. They are supported by corporate policies, procedures, checklists and other resources, as well as location-specific internal websites.

We require that our tier-one suppliers also have an environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001 or an equivalent standard. We monitor compliance with this requirement through our supplier assessment program.

OSHA VPP STAR Program
The following Motorola sites have earned the highest honor from the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA): the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Safety Through Accountability and Recognition (STAR) award:

• Arlington Heights, Illinois, USA
• Schaumburg, Illinois, USA

This prestigious U.S. award recognizes sites demonstrating superior safety and health programs. Only two-hundredths of one percent of eligible sites in the United States have earned this award.

In 2008, our Reynosa, Mexico site began the process of qualifying for the Safe Industries certification that is awarded after meeting high safety and health standards as defined by the Mexico Secretariat of Labor. This certification mirrors the U.S. OSHA VPP program. We aim to complete the first stage of the three-year certification process in 2009.
