Hazardous / Non-hazardous waste: Performance and goals

In 2008, we produced 509 tonnes of hazardous waste compared with 319 tonnes in 2005. The increase is due to the reclassification of electronics waste from non-hazardous to hazardous in China and Malaysia.

Tonnes of hazardous waste generated per billion sales has increased from 8.7 tonnes in 2005 to 16.9 tonnes in 2008. This is due to weakening sales between in 2008 as well as the reclassification of waste outlined above.

Our recycling of non-hazardous waste remained steady at approximately 79 percent in 2008.

Reducing non-biodegradable waste at on-site cafeterias
In 2007, Motorola launched an initiative in its 16 U.S. on-site employee cafeterias focusing on use of washable dishes or, when take-out is necessary, using biodegradable packaging.

In 2007, Motorola Singapore started collecting food waste for conversion into biogas and compost material. The site also removed around 300,000 Styrofoam cups per year, replacing them with re-usable cups.
